crystal's gma bought her a 8 month old kitten ( siamese i believe and no name yet))  against my will. she knows that the dogs come 1st and thecat gets no special treatment such as dogs getting crated or put outside .  before pics id like to explain a ......... challenge rather than calling it a problem LOL  . gracie mae does great with the cat, of course the puppy side of her gets to excited sometimes and the cat lets her know it! lol  when i am around gracie knows that i "claim" the cat therefore following the pack instincts in a calm way of being around the cat. Beejii does the same when im around, they both know that the cat is off limits when im home. however when im NOT home beejii wants to kill the cat, plain and simple genetics and instinct. he will also flare up BIG TIME if the cat swipes gracie enough to make her squeal. of course he will back down by a simple stern "SHH" sound by me. ( doesnt work with anyone else ) even though i have firm control of my dogs, im still worried. the cat can take care of itself , hell its ARMED with deadly weapons lol, beejii not realizing his state of mind and biting crystal or gracie is my main concern. ithink i should have stood my ground a little more firmly about the no cat rule but its somthing of a gift ..........  anywho pics of the kitty n gracie mae are in the pic thread.

BTW beejii is in no way put out or shunned...........he is by my side all the time, same for gracie mae. i do not hit or get angry at them either , i do however do the tap on the hind quarters to break the thought process leading to excitment. by tap i mean 2 fingers and a touch, no force whatso ever. and it works every time. any ideas other than me being a referee for life ?? haha. i know as alpha/pack leader they will follow my lead and "obey" me but its whenim not there that worries me. how can i get them to look at crystal as 2nd in charge. she is a very shy woman and is terrified of a barking dog. even gracie mae growling will make her uneasy ( although its puppy/play growl)

Sounds like you are being a great pack leader but Crystal needs to step up and become an alpha, too. I understand that can be hard for some people but for everyone's sake I hope she can....especially since the new cat seems to have triggered some instinct in Beeji that maybe didn't show before.

Well, I have 2 cats and three ratties, so I can tell you it will be ok and work out. I love my cats just as much as I love my dogs. The cats can usually take care of themselves, especially if they have claws. I good couple swipes across the nose from a cat whould put the dog in his/her place. But, I still would not leave them alone together. You never know what could happen, especailly if beejii wants to eat the cat as much as you say. Just keep getting on him, and telling him no.
The dogs will not see crystal in an alpha postion as long as she acts even a little scared. You should watch the dog whisperer, he deals with this tpe of situation all the time.

My cats and dogs mostly get along. I don't trust the dogs with small kittens though, instincts to hunt and kill are very strong. If the cat is big enough to get away and has high spots to escape to if things get too rough, it should be fine. It won't win a fight against a Rattie, but my cats have my dogs buffaloed. I have one old Mama cat that is a grouch even to the other cats, the dogs are afraid of her and do not get near, she trained them well since they were pups. It doesn't work with an older dog though. You will just have to insist on the behavior you want until it becomes habit to the dogs.

ANYTHING WORTH DOING IS WORTH OVERDOING Mom of eight, only three left at home! Pack leader to ten ratties: Maggie, Mysty, Berry, Simon, Ceecee and five puppies, Star,Sari, Bluebelle, Double stuf, and Snortie. As well as Ginger the Border Collie and a herd of turkeys!

Do you really think Beeji wants to kill the cat? I mean the cat can always get away up on counters, etc. right...? I haven't had to deal with a dog that seriously wanted a cat dead IN THE HOUSE - now outside that's a different matter, especially with my whippet. Maybe it's the Basenji in him....
