Hi Nora, I posted under tearing off her clothes in Just Chat but this is a big problem for us.

How do I train Fred that it is unacceptable to rip off Alice's sweater when they are outside? We tailgate and even cook out in the winter. I would love for them to be out there with us and I find I have to keep them in the house a lot because Fred catches her by her sweater and rips it off her or stretches out the neck.  She wiggles out of it then freezes and I have to take her inside where I know she doesn't want to be but I can't keep her out in the cold without it. Can I train this out of Fred when they play? We yell NO but in that much activity he doesn't hear the no or let it go.

First of all... I would keep Fred on a leash for starters... to allow you control. That way if you see him headed toward Alice, you can stop him. Keep a water bottle handy and spray him with it as you say in a firm voice "FRED... NO !!" It will get his attention...

Or.. if you don't want to use water, put some coins in a can and shake it as you say "FRED... NO". Give a little jerk back on his leash as you give the command and shake the can.

Eventually... I promise you... he WILL get the message...

Also... when he does stop... give him a treat and reward him (always reinforce a negative command with a positive reward). Keep some treats in your pockets for this purpose!

Good luck!

Thanks Nora,  I won't be sending the messgae not to play right? I just want him not to rip her sweater off but they can play their hearts out.

It will probably interfere with the playing... yes. But I'm not sure how to help that? I mean... if they play, what's to stop him from getting revved up and destroying the clothes? Where would that boundary be? Understand? Honestly... when my dogs play I don't have clothes on them... too risky. But if you want them to keep their clothes on (haha... sounds funny)... then some boundaries have to be established.

UGH, it is so crazy, they need to go outside to run around otherwise they will go stir crazy but it is so cold I hate to put them out there without sweaters. It's a crazy catch 22. I swear when Fred is chasing her he hoones in on that damn sweater and catches her by it. He must think she is a giant sweakie toy and she loves it! Once he gets hold she tries to wriggle right out and between the two of them they have it ruined in 4 minutes. UGH.

Then take the sweater off. If they are running and playing outside in the cold, their body temperature will rise and they will be warm. It's when they are not running that they get colder.

This is just my suggestion.... but Bailey runs and plays outdoors in the cold all the time...
