| Mr. Alpha Rattie -- find someone to work with you and Gracie one-on-one. A few sessions to get someone who knows what to do and how to do it... and who will show you how to do it... is well worth any money you might spend. Going rate here is $50 an hour... don't know what it is in your neck of the woods. Our dogs DO look to us for everything... and it 's our responsibility to give them what they need cuz they rely on instinct more than brain knowledge. If dogs are going to interact with us humans at OUR level that we expect them to... then we owe it to them to teach them how to do it. Otherwise, it won't happen. |

Posted By Alpha Rattie on 04/30/2007 12:17 PM i wish some one would work with me and gracie.......... she looks to me for everything and trying my hardest just doesnt seem tyo cut it , i think its more lack of knowledge than lack of trying. we both crave more out of our relationship, hopfuly we can do it Did you read Nora's post about teaching recall...I think I started it... just to save time from typing it again...
Anyway, short version...get a long leash (25 feet) have Gracie and Beeji (train them at different times) just wander off from you. Stay still and quiet and when they aren't paying attention to you, say "Dog's name, Come!" Immediately pull on the leash and reel them in praising them "Good Come!!!" Make A BIG deal out of it and give a treat. Do this 15 minutes a day. Mario (in just one training session) was transformed! Never call your dogs if they can't be controlled until they have it mastered. Hope that helped.

| A very KEY component of this is to not allow the dog the opportunity NOT to come to you... the primary reason for working the dog always on a long line. I no longer have to use the long line... but trust me, I used it for several months and even used a shock collar a few times too. It was either that or Bailey was gonna get run over. I'm not a huge advocate of shock collars for the average pet owner, but they do have their place and are wonderful training tools IF used by someone who knows how to use them. I no longer need the shock collar or the long line... but Bailey has been in training consistently for the year I've had him. He didn't get how he is quickly .. it's been a gradual process over a year's time, and he's STILL not consistent in some areas! |

I'm going to try this out with a long line... I think it was Paul who suggested getting one from the dollar store. Just gotta get my butt over there!!
It's funny, I'm the same way as Alpha Rattie, I need to train Mic to do more than just tricks, but alot of the time I just don't know what to do... I mean, I read up on things, but its completely different when you are actually doing it. Some situations come up that I have no idea what to do. I have looked around at trainers, but the average around here is about $100/per hour and I just can't afford that. That's why I love this forum, I can ask any stupid question and get a pretty helpful response!
I have faith that one day Mic will be an obedient and great dog, its just taking me awhile to learn it all and actually know what to do! |

| Shannon, you are SO RIGHT---it was definitely more than just "fun" (although I think I overdosed on the fun, food, and friends!) Nora not only gave great advice to anyone who needed it or asked any questions, but was more than willing to put actions to her words, and actually show people what she was talking about----there was such a difference in the timid (but cute) Mario that I saw Friday evening and the more self-confident Mario I saw Saturday during our cow-pie hike, it was incredible. Mario is a very intelligent little guy and you'll soon see, Shannon, that once he figures out that training sessions are fun and that "manners" will take him far, the lightbulb will go on, and he will almost get a thirst for knowledge! (wait and see!) |

Thank you, Paul! Mario is so special to me and I want him to be safe. He's doing great!! I just got done doing a training session with him and he came EVERY time!! I didn't get a chance to go to the dollar store for a long line yet so I used the string from my son's kite! LOL He WANTED to come to me.... I had control but he did eagerly walk to me when I said 'come'. I am so proud. I even let him take a break for a few minutes and he decided to lay down in the shade. I waited a few more minutes then called him...he jumped up and ran to me!!! Yay!!! I give him a A for the day!!! |

As time passes and more time is invested in your training... you'll see a huge difference. Just please remember NOT to call him if he has the option not to come to you. So it's best not to even allow him in that situation. If he comes to you on his own.. have a treat ready from your pocket and reward him. (I've been known to walk around the house with treats stuffed in my bra if I didn't have pockets! LOL) What you have for him must be worth more than anything else he might want. I'm so proud of you and Mario, Shannon !!
Now... once he learns to come on comand, we'll teach you how to send him away on command! LOL |
