I have a 4 month old Rat Terrier/Schnauzer named Dante. When I least expect it....I find chewed up cords around my house. They are all important ones at that. I don't know what to do to stop him from chewing on all the chargers and light plug ins. Any suggestions??? I NEED HELP. I really do not want to get rid of him if this can be fixed.

Well, puppies are going to chew. Just give him something that would be ok to chew on, like a bone, old sock, toy etc. You can put all your cords in a heavy duty cord tubing protector from an electronics store so he wont chew on them.

Good advice from Sara and Donna, puppies will chew and he may be teething! Give him appropriate things to chew - nylabones (minty type) are great, etc. And crate him when you're not there - chewing is not a reason to give him away. JMO

Great advice from everyone - puppies are notorious for chewing both from teething and perhaps boredom. You need to put out of reach the cords you can, cover the ones you can't, not leave him unattended, and provide him with proper items to chew on. If you do these things as well as make sure he is getting the proper amount of exercise and working with him on basic behavior commands, there should be no reason for you to have problems.

Nibbler did the same thing, finally we found a toy that he'd rather chew on above anything else, so now he pounces on that rather than the cords. and we have one that goes all the way across our livingroom at the moment

I had a real problem with this when Hardy was a few months old.

He kept chewing my computer wires.
I taped them with masking tape, but he loved to chew off the masking tape.

I tried a few things.
I bought a large plastic irrigation pipe to protect my computer wires.

For other exposed wires, I rubbed Vix Vaopr rub on it to give it a nasty taste.

Hardy was bad about exploring everything with his mouth (wicker chairs, fabric, couch, pillows, etc etc).
But after a while he seemed like he became less interested in those things, and more interested in his stuffed animals.

get either bitter apple or bitter yuck spray, and put it on anything that you don't want the pup to chew on. It has really helped with the unwanted chewing. I think you can get it pretty much anywhere.

good luck.

Food for thought......if you have children DO NOT give your dog a stuffed squeeky toy.  Sugar now thinks the girls' stuffed animals are her territory so that was a lesson learned.  My husband is upset that she chewed his PSP cord.  She is 2 and chews.  For having a husband,2 girls,2 dogs,2 cats, and 2 birds my house is super clean(most of the time).  But she still finds something.  It's getting better though.  I did some reading about it actually and tried that advice.  I never scolded her for doing it.  I ignored it and just make sure she has something to chew on before we all head out for the day.  With all these animals I'm surprised she has time to get bored to chew.  Don't give up.  Puppies....as cute as they are CAN be frustrating.  But at the end of the day and their cute little faces are looking at you it makes it all worth it.  Worst case.....if he gets shocked...maybe it will be a lesson learned...the hard way.

Tape cords to the wall with electrical tape to help prevent Dante from gaining access to them, and hide excess lengths of cord behind furniture or appliances, hidden from Dante's view. Prevent access to visible cords by wrapping flexible safety cable (available at Lowe's/Home Depot) around them. Apply unpleasant-tasting substances to exposed cords. These could include bitter apple spray, hot-pepper sauce, menthol, toothpaste, mouthwash or lemon juice. Experiment with different flavors, since pets' taste aversions vary. Have favorite toys available to distract your pet from the cords, and rotate toys every few days to prevent boredom.

Yes, the worst case scenario is that he will get shocked, but why run that risk? Electrical shocks are always unpleasant and potentially life threatening.

If you can't supervise Dante, leave him crated.
