Me and Lucy just got back from our walk to go pick up my car downtown. Is it normal for Lucy to be all excited and trying to lead the way when we first leave and then later fall walking nicely on leash groove a couple blocks away? I just think she gets really excited. Luckily for her today I actually had a backup leash in the house, my brilliant move was to leave both of her leashes and halter in the car from last weekends trip to my parents. I usually play catch with her to exercise her. Our walks typically have a main purpose, such as getting the car or walking to the pet store. So it's like a double whammy when we go, especially since she loves those car rides.

Sounds normal, more energy and excitement starting out...just like a fresh horse going on a trail ride. They start out prancing and dancing and trying to crowhop and then after a while they start getting tired and walk nicely. My dogs will start out more exciteable and then get calmer.

Perfectly normal, Colleen. I think the key is that she DOES calm down once in the groove.

Chips is the same way. Sometimes though he is way over the top and I have to get on to him and then he lines up nicely and walks like a gentleman. Shows you how smart these dogs are. They are glad to rule and reign as long as you let them!

Glad to hear it's not completely wrong that she does that. She does calm down and behave even when we are in public situations, like petstores or farmers market. She just gets really excited and pulls ahead sometimes even letting out a little whine. But she gets good after only like a minute or two so I just let her get it out. It's not like she's a huge dog that's uncontrollable.

Find as many dog friendly places as you can. WE have a restaurant with an outdoor area that Chips is welcomed in and also our Bed Bath and Beyond allows dogs as long as they go in the buggy.

Do your dogs pull and choke themselves while you are walking them? Cody does the whole time so I had to get him a harness.

Nibbler pulls and chokes himself once we actually get to the grass where he pottys. But he only really does this at night... as well as jumping, hopping, and doing flips just about haha.

I think that the two most important words you can teach your rat terrier are "sit" and "stay". If we need Maggie's attention we use "Stay" and she immediately stops what she is doing and stops. That has been a lifesaver several times. Betsy
