Ok... it's gotten to where I can't talk to "regular" people about pet responsibility anymore....
I pull into the vet's office this afternoon... park next to a red pick'em'up truck that has a white eskie in the bed of it. I didn't think too much about it, other than noticing how pretty the dog was. I reached over to get my purse and I heard this loud yelp. When I looked at the truck next to me (where the yelp sound came from), there HUNG that dog by his leash/collar... dangling... wiggling....
It scared the pee out of me! I jumped out of my car and grabbed the dog (who was hysterical) and although I couldn't get the leash off because he would not be still... I did finally just pull the entire collar off with leash still attached.
I was sitting on the concrete trying to calm this dog down when the owner came out of the vet clinic asking what had happened. I was FURIOUS! I said "your dog almost hung himself... he jumped out of the bed of the truck .. you obviously had him tied to something." You know what she said? She said "Well... he's ok. He's never ridden in the truck bed before... he'll get used to it". I asked... "Don't you have a crate?" Her response was "he's not crate trained". At that point I was about to "lose it".. and I responded... "obviously he's not trained to the truck bed either! Do you realize that had I not been right here, your dog would have hung himself? Do you realize how dangerous it is to ride with animals in an open truck bed?"
All during this conversation the dog made absolutely NO attempt to leave me to go to her.
I got up from the concrete .. she walked over to the dog and opened the truck door and the dog jumped in.. obviously still shaken. The lady didn't say another word.. she just left.
I'm standing there with smoke coming out my ears I'm so furious. I still see that picture in my head...
People are such idiots! Why can't pet owners be more responsible?????? I swear the older I get, the less patience I have with people like this!

Oh Nora... This just had to be the straw that broke the camel's back, after your friend's dog being hit by a car after you'd warned her! 
I don't know what is wrong with people either... and I'm just going to hope and pray that this woman was more "embarrassed" about what happened than she wanted to admit to you... and that she really did learn a lesson from what happened! GRRRR... some humans!!! |

I agree, Nora, there are definitely pet owners out there that dont have a clue what they are doing. I've seen people do that exact same thing---tether a dog in the back of their truck bed, when the dog obviously has never been there before and doesn't know exactly where it's limits are. Makes you want to just do a "MOE" thing and poke them in the eye or bang their heads together, huh?

| This is so bazaar..I am fostering a dog (eskie, owner turn in) and when they brought her to me she was tied in the bed of the truck..I wanted to pounce on this idiot but didnt' want them to change their minds about giving the dog up.. |

I'm sorry Nora for the poor dog. The world is full of stupid people, unfortunately  Thank God you were there. Hopefully she will have learned her lesson, though she wouldn't admit it to you. |

Oh yeah. Horse owners are bad enough...the way they ride and handle their horses drives me nuts.
But dog owners?! They are EVERYWHERE and are so completely stupid and uncaring of their dog's safety and health. When we were in Atlanta we got behind a van that had 2 beagles in crates fastened to the bumper!!!!!! If that van was rear-ended those dogs would be crushed.
Ok, I'm not going to get started on this...too much of it. Glad you were there to save the eskimo Nora! |

My gosh, Nora! I'm surprised you didn't have a heart attack! I would have. Thank God you were there to save that dog's life. Hopefully the tongue lashing you gave her (well deserved!) will keep her from doing that again.
I guess my plan to strap the crates to my luggage rack on top of the van, with the dogs in them, is not a good one.

| That is awful. I'm glad you gave that woman an earfull. She deserved it. I know that a lot of dogs seem to do fine with being in the bed of a truck, but they seem trained to be there. People just need to know that just because you want your dog to do something doesn't mean that there going to. I've always thought it was strange but everyday at school I see this boarder collie in the bed of a truck, obviously trained to be. He's not leashed, but never leaves the truck. He wont even come to say hi or be petted. He just lays on the metal tool box in the bed. He looks like he loves it. At first I was shocked to see this, but now by seeing the dog so often I still see it as risky, but the dog is not moving and really doesn't care about what is going on outside of the truck. But of course I don't think I could ever do that with any dog I ever have, no matter what. |

| I think under "normal" circumstances, I would have kept my mouth shut... but I was so distraught and upset, I guess I just couldn't hold back. I think if she had said "it's none of your business" I would have hit her. Ya know... off and on all day today I've thought about what happened. It just keeps filtering through my brain. People are such idiots. |

Big hugs and energy to you. I am so glad you were there to save that dog. I don't understand why some people insist on having kids or pets. It drives me up the wall, when I see crazy things like that and like you I tend to leap in esp. if the dog or child is in danger!
It seems she had not only never heard of crates, she also knows nothing about cross ties either. It is not ideal but it keeps the dog from falling/jumping/being flung from the back of a pickup and hanging themselves.
I freak out when I see dogs loose in the back of a pickup, kids standing in the car (or in any position that is not a properly installed car seat). I had to follow a truck once on open highway and I just knew that dog was going to be bumped out of the back. I was a nervous wreck!!!!
Thank goodness, the dog made it that time!
Animal cruelty is often sloughed off, but research shows that anyone who can be and is cruel to animals is very likely and usually does escalate to abuse of humans, even murder.
I take every case of abuse seriously. I worked at the Hawaiian Humane Society as the education director for about 4 years and talk about getting burnt out. It was so hard to hear kids repeating what they had learned from their parents about animals.
Back here in the south, the practice of "letting your hunting dog go" after hunt season esp. if the dog is old or doesn’t' hunt well is rampant. The local shelters and pounds are full of them. Also the practice of "well I can't keep him so I will just take him/her to the country and someone will take them in” is rampant and reprehensible. I hate the idea of having to euthanize an animal, but a humane death is a far better fate than starving to death, being hit by a car, not getting medical care, etc.
The ideal would be where folks care for one another, are educated about the proper care and treatment of animals and kids and adults, esp. elders and we would have no need for shelters, euthanization, etc.
Folks would spay/neuter and only breed responsibly; corporations wouldn't skimp on food safety for the almighty dollar and well... I could go on and on.
This really touched me Nora. Give yourself some nice deep breaths and accept thanks from us that you were there, you are you and we can only do what we can.
