Little Bit has moved in to a house with a 1 year old baby human and a 2 1/2 yr old Toddler human!
I want to be very careful with Little Bit and just want to know if I should panic if he runs over and snatches a dropped Cherrio or a dropped Kix. I've heard that grains and corn are very bad for them.
If any of you have small children of this age (or have had), I'm sure you understand that this is a common occurance.
Would also like to know if I should even bother trying to train Little Bit on "which" toys are his. In his defense, my living room is a toy factory and I could see where he could easily get confused. I have picked up the toys that have "special meaning", but am also concerned that some of these toys could be dangerous to Little Bit and I may not even be aware of which ones they are.
Thanks in advance for more help! |

I wouldn't really worry too much about Little Bit stealing a cheerio or kix. Actually I have read about using cheerios as training treats. There is a list of foods poisonous to dogs under the Health/Diet section. I would just watch out for these foods. Grains and corns aren't really all that bad for them, just not ideal in large quantities in their food. They are considered a filler in foods. |

Good advice from Colleen about the food. As for the toys, I'd try and put up anything that has parts that he could bite off and choke on, but with your children's ages, I'm assuming most of their toys are of the stuffed or non-small parts variety. I think you're correct in that if he has his "own" stuffed toys, for example, it's going to be virtually impossible for him to understand that other stuffed toys are not his for the destroying. |

When my kids were little, we used to let our dog "clean" the floor after mealtimes. |

| I agree Pam! They are the perfect "hoovers"! I love it. Just be careful of an of the no no foods like grapes, baby food(with onion powder) for examples. Good luck I know what a handful kids and baby ratties can be! They just go so good together! |

| I agree with the others - be careful there are no toys he can choke on. Corn and wheat aren't toxic, they just aren't good in dog food because they are cheap fillers that take the place of quality ingredients. I use Cheerios as training treats and if we have corn for dinner my dogs will often get a little bit (as they do of most veggies). |

| I've used cheerios as training treats occasionally... just to use something different. I don't use them much... but occasionally is fine. They don't hurt the dog at all. I think it's important when using treats.. that you change them out from time to time. |

LOL Just the other day I was cleaning out the fridge for trash day... I had put pea's in the trash, Sassy tipped the trash can and pea's went everywhere.... My girls looked like ant eaters scooping up the peas on the floor.. I just stood there laughing, and thinking hey I don't have to pick them up.... |

Bandit is our little hoover, well, maybe more like a "dust-buster" if you remember those... He inspects Joelle's high chair (also 2 1/2) after every meal. He actually has learned which toys are his & which are hers, but when it comes to stuffed animals, he just can't help himself, those we have to keep out of his reach. Too much fun shaking the dickens out of 'em... We keep Bandit well stocked in toys of his own, but I've had to start kenneling (crate) him during meals & bathtime as he gets jealous & deliberately chews toys for attention. Usually he'll just bring them to where I can see him with a smirky "look what I have..." expression. But last night he actually chewed a "special" doll of my daughter's & he's lost some priviledges for that. Joelle still doesn't know... I hid "Pink Baby" in the closet & I'll have to break the news to her when I get home tonight... Sigh... |

Oh No!!! Not Pink Baby!!! Haleigh, my 2 1/2 yr old would come unglued if anything ever happened to Elmo! I now understand much better about the "filler" aspects of cherrios and corn. I misunderstood and thought they were harmful. Charlie, our moose of a pittbull, has always been my ultimate Hoover!! He cleans up anything and everything! As digusting as it may be, both my girls were Preemies and had digestive problems, but Charlie always got to cleaning up their spit up messes before I could. Eeewww. But most helpful on some days! LOL Little Bit's biggest pleasures for now seem to be the wooden puzzles, magazines, and the baby binkys! LOL |

| Watch the binkies! The soft plastic can get stuck inside a dog as easily as anything else. my pups teethed on firewood. It didn't seem to hurt them but I worried about splinters inside. |

I've been watching as closely as I possibly can. I now believe the fastest creatures on this planet are Ratties and Toddlers! He has gotten ahold of 2 of them and as far as I can tell, the rest are now out of reach. My female pitt used to scare the heck out of me! She ate anything that was wood! My hubby build them a dog house out of 3/4" ply wood and she widened the door by 2 feet!! We tried everything and finally came to the conclusion that there was nothing we could do. She ate sticks, pine cones, firewood, boards, etc. We quit buying the "pittbull approved" tug of war ropes because she could unravel them and would eat them too! She was a bazaar dog for sure! We used to laugh when it was time to pick up dog poo in the yard, we knew hers would either be very colorful, or we could set hers on the curb and let the recycling people pick it up as yard debris! We never did that, but it was pretty funny to laugh about. Back to Little Bit, he seems to be adjusting really well. I did give him a couple of the kids toys and he's been doing a great job (so far) of only playing with what I've given him. We are also working with him on laying down while we eat, sitting, laying down, and coming when we call him. It amazes me how fast he is catching on. I'm sure we will have backslides, but he seems to be doing great!! Have I mentioned lately that I love this forum?? Thanks Everybody!! |
