I know Debra! Mitzy and Loco have grazed on them for years - no problems! I think some dogs may be more sensitive than others but after reading about them poisoning dogs I'm going to be more careful. Problem is we have a zillion live oaks around here.

I know. I have a huge tree in my yard. I don't know how I'm gonna keep her out of them.

When we first got Teddy I had a lady approach me and ask what I was feeding him. I told her dry & wet food with no corn or wheat. She said there is a special food made just for Terriers. Has anyone heard of this food? She also told me about not giving him grapes. She said it has something to do with the rattys respiratory system.

I had a puppy die from eating a death cap once. I watch Teddy and Moose like a hawk when they are out in the back part of our property. I go out every late winter and  early spring and dig up the caps when they start to push up.

Just a warning for everyone, I know we all like to give our little furbabies a human treat once in a while. But please be careful. Our little guy Moose became diabetic about 2 years ago. We give him 2 insulin shots a day. I blame myself for his illness. He is a carb-o-holic. When we would have spaghetti we always gave him some. We let him eat bites of just about everything we ate. He ended up with panciatise(spelling)  We almost lost him. He is doing great on his meds!

Thank you for this post Cathy! Most of us like to give bites of whatever we're eating and we DO need to remember these are small dogs and so much of that stuff is bad for them. (Not the veggies but the pasta, sauces, bread, crackers, anything with sugar, etc.)

I needed this warning myself as I've been letting Mitzy lick up bagel crumbs, yogurt, etc. After reading your experience with Moose - no more "cleaning up" for Miss Mitzy!

It would be great if you could repost this as a new topic - more people may read it that way! Thanks again.

Would you guys think banana or peanuts would hurt a dog? My dad has the bad habit of giving Buster a piece of what ever he has while he's "baby sitting". Although it is quite funny I've never seen a dog that has liked either... Quite often I don't know my dad has given him any peanuts in till I pick up his potty pads. I don't mind bananas as much as I do the peanuts because I figure bananas are good for you, but the peanuts... knowing its showing up in his poop I just don't like it to much.

I doubt that the peanuts are harmful as peanut butter itself is often used as a treat for dogs. If you're finding them later on his puppy pads, he's obviously just passing them. I would worry more about the generally concept of feeding dogs "little" pieces of whatever the person is having every time the person eats...that can lead to a lot of problems: weight issues, among others. Many people foods while technically not toxic contain too much salt, sugar, etc., etc. and a dog's system is simply not built to handle too much of that. If you dad only babysits occasionally and isn't making a habit of giving Buster everything he eats, I'd probably let it slide as "grandpa spoiling"

Yes, I agree, except are these salted peanuts? A couple of peanust shouldn't hurt but too much salt is bad for them.

I can only image when he gets actual grandkids... good God... I've asked him to stop and he agreed he would so I'm guessing I'll just find something else more healthy for him to give Buster... any suggestions?

Snap peas, baby carrots, the bananas are ok - just be aware that if he gets too much of these he may have a little "tummy trouble" i.e. diarhea, depends on how sensitive his stomach is. I give mine a few cheerios or rice krispies sometimes but again, not too many.

Avacado -  Only the leaves, skin and pits are toxic. There is a South American version that is toxic, it's rare here in the US.

Thanks a lot for the info!
On the raw eggs...I heard that only the egg whites contain avidin, but the egg YOLKs contain a lot of biotin that makes up for the loss of biotin caused by the egg white. Also, I heard dogs are more resistant to Salmonella than humans because of their shorter digestive tract. I guess egg yolks are good for your dog on occasion?

Why should towels and balls be avoided... I can understand if its a large breed and a small ball but if it was a small ball and a small breed..

If anyone is interested- you might read.... Pet Food Nation. Lots of good info on commercial pet food, how it's made, what "human food" is okay for dogs, etc. I'm not saying I swear by this book, but it had a lot of good info- including some info on what foods are toxic. No grapes or raisins! Thye've both been know to kill dogs.

This is not good. My rattie has a thing for coffee, we have to keep it away from him at all times but sometimes he's a little sneakster.

I had a dog, Molly, whose favorite treat in the whole world was raisins. She was bugging me one day when I was eating one so I offered it to her, assuming she'd sniff it and leave me alone, like she normally did when I offered her something dogs don't like. Instead, she ate it and trembled all over in pure joy. Surprised, I fed her quite a bunch for about two months, and then I found out they were toxic and stopped. I felt like an awful pet parent but I had no idea and she loved them so much.
I don't really regret it, because she ended up being hit by a car so I figure if she was going to die so suddenly, at least she got to enjoy her favorite treat for a while (if she had ended up dying of an illness I'd probably always wonder if it had something to do with the raisins).
Still, I mainly say this to a) warn others that some dogs just LOVE raisins/grapes so be careful not to leave them around assuming your dog won't want it and b) also comfort anyone whose dog eats some accidently because it didn't actually hurt Molly at all, and she ate a lot of more than any of your dogs are likely to...
I think it's one of those things that's either toxic in huge amounts or builds up over time. So a few occassionally didn't hurt, but I ceased and desisted as soon as I found out they were yummy poison for her.
