I let Mardi have dry food available all the time at first because I didn't know how much!

Too much will give them the runs.

I still try to keep some dry food in the bowl but I am trying to deduce how much she eats so that I know. It is about two cups at 8 months and 41 pounds, yeh she is a big girl but not fat at all, very active.

Are you sure he is six or seven pounds? I only ask because it seems that at that weight, he would only get to maybe 15lbs full grown. Thats a side note though. My dog weighed 7lbs at 15 weeks and hes only going to be 14lbs total once hes finished growing.

Anyway, about the food

I fed 3/4 cup per day (split into two) until he was about four months then I went to one cup a day at five months. He's getting 1 1/4cup now at 7 months (and he weighs 13lbs right now, he's still growing). My other dog who is one year old gets 1 cup a day. He is 16lbs.

I had the EXACT same problem you did with the Orijen so I had to switch food too. There was just too much protein for his puppy guts to process.

You can have mushy poo if you are feeding too much, too. And just because he acts hungry does not mean he is. If you fed him five cups a day, he would gobble them all up and look for more.

I would cut back to one cup since you say he is very active and see if his poo firms up. You dont mention if it was the exact same flavor of dog food but usually its best not to change their food brands/flavors too quickly. It wont kill them or anything but they will have loose stools for a few days if you do.

I find that the labels on the back of the bag are so confusing. They dont know if my dog is going to be a great dane or a toy poodle when they suggest how much a puppy should eat so it made it hard for me to figure out just what to feed.

And welcome to the forums and the wonderful world of rat terriers!

I definitely think you're right about too much giving him the runs! He seems to be doing a little better now that I'm mixing the new food more slowly and giving him less. Thanks for your help!

Hi Saffyra,

Thanks so much for your advice! I just weighed him today and he is 7.5 lbs, so you're probably right about him only getting to 15 lbs. In that instance, which is better to feed him - regular puppy food or small breed puppy food? We feed him Wellness which is a good high quality food, but the regular puppy kind recommends 1 1/2 cups per day which seems like a lot for his weight. The small breed one recommends 3/4 cup per day. I just want to make sure I'm feeding him enough and not starving him - he is the 1st puppy I've ever had, so I'm all new at this. When I called Wellness to ask, they said the small breed is good for him, but if I want to feed him the regular then I should slowly transition over and also slowly increase the amount to get him to 1 1/2 cups per day. I'm so confused lol.

Orijen definitely has way too much protein. I'm so glad I switched him off of that.

I agree that the bags are confusing! I just want someone to tell me what amount to feed him and how much, but my vet recommend science diet which I do not like, so I don't know if I can even trust her.

I fed small breed bites when he was smaller only because it made it easier for him to chew, especially when he started losing his teeth. But now they are on regular size, mostly because the flavor I needed didnt come in small breed size.

It doesnt have to be specifically for puppies. If it says All Life Stages, that works too.

If I were you, I would feed him one cup a day while you are switching foods. Once you switch, go to 1 1/2c. and see how he does. If his poo is still pudding consistency then its too much. Then try 1 1/4 cup.

The hard part is that as they grow they need more and then they need less once they stop so its kind of a constant keeping at eye out to make sure hes not getting fat but that he also has proper poop.

These were my first puppies, too. I'd never had a dog before and being able to ask all my questions here was REALLY nice.

On another note, HE IS SO SO SO CUTE!! Whats his name?

I did a lot of research on it and it sounds like the smaller breed formula has a lot more nutrients/minerals compacted into the smaller bites. That's why the portion size is so much smaller because he'll get all the nutrients in less food. I've been trying to get him on the regular puppy kind, but even transitioning gradually he keeps having mushy poo  I tried increasing him to 1/2 cup at each serving and he barely finishes it, so I think I'm just going to keep him on the small breed for now since he can eat less and get more nutrients. He seemed hungry after, but I think it's just because he loves the food lol. When he was on the small breed his poo was much better and his fur felt much softer. I can tell the difference even just transitioning to the new stuff for a few days - I think there must be something in it that doesn't agree with him, or maybe it's just the increased amount. I talked to Wellness and they said the small breed kind is meant for puppies that are going to be 25 lbs or under, so it makes sense just to keep him on that I guess.

Yea I agree, this forum is awesome - I've learned so much from here!

Thanks!! His name is Ryder  Your dog is really cute too!!!

I really love the Natural Balance Ultra Premium Synergy formula for puppies to adults. There are several reasons I love this food, 1- Good for puppies and adults so you don't have to change from puppy food to adult food. 2- It has salmon oil for skin and coat. 3- It has prebiotics to keep a healthy tummy. 4- It advertises premium quality stools... And that is so true. Poop here is easy to clean up with food even when fresh it doesn't squash or stick and easy to scoop up. All my dogs from 10 year old Jack to 1.5 year old Kiara are on it. Kiara is 7 lbs and gets 1/8 cup 3 times a day, it helps keeps her weight just right. I have to feed three times a day due to Jack's meds for his heart condition, Jack gets the same amount as Kiara. Nala, Briar, and foster Blinkie get 1/4 cup in the morning, 1/8 cup afternoon and 1/8 cup in the evening. At 15 weeks and 7 lbs your little one will proably weigh between 11-15 lbs grown. For that size with the dog food I use and feeding twice a day I would use 1/4 cup twice a day. All the puppies I've raised in foster care on this food have had premium poopies and I've not had to deal with puppies with the squirts.

Just adding that some dogs, if given a chance, will stuff themselves until they are about ready to burst.  In a pack feeding environment they are all eager to finish their portion and try to get any leftovers (ha!) from someone else.

Dont worry that switching foods is causing him to have less nutrients. Small breed bites are just smaller pieces which make it easier for small mouths to chew. There's the same ingredients in the regular size kibbles. I actually switched from small breed to the regular size partly because Bugsy was vacuum sucking up the small breed bites without chewing and I was worried he would choke.
Dexter is a totally different eater and he slowly chews and eats every bite. It takes him twice as long to eat as it does Bugsy.

He will have some mushy poo while you switch him but it *should* go back to normal after a week. I dont think you said whether you were switching the exact same food just regular size kibble or if you were switching flavors as well (like going from chicken to lamb). If switching flavors, its possible that he is allergic to the new one.

Its perfectly fine to stay on the small breed if thats what works best! Then you dont have to worry about anything except portion size. And you can play around with that until you figure out what works best.

I think Vets are sucked into science diet by their marketing campaign. It seems like dog owners who research dog food don't pick SD. People who just listen to their vet buy it. It used to be one of the few premium dog food that I was aware of. Now I know better mostly because of Whole Dog Journal.

Vets, like people doctors, are more into diagnosing and prescribing medication than preventative nutrition.

Thanks so much for the advice! Right now he gets 3/4 cup per day (I divide it up by 2 feedings). After he's done eating, he starts sniffing around all over the carpet trying to find something to eat, and then he runs to the cabinet where I keep his food and starts pushing on the door with his nose, and then he whines like he is still hungry. Should I just ignore it? When I gave him more food he would stop himself and leave whatever was left in the bowl, and then he would go play and not act like he was still hungry. I'm afraid by cutting him back to only 1/2 cup per day that he will be even more hungry...

I found this website which has a really good calorie counter (http://goldendoodles.com/care/food_calculator.htm) and it says for his weight/age that he should get about 513 kcalories per day, which would be a little bit over 1 cup per day of the small breed food. Is that too much? He is very active...he loves to run, play for hours, and constantly does laps around my furniture in the living room. I don't want to overfeed him, but I also don't want him to be hungry. When I give him extra food he never finishes it...he always leaves some in the bowl, and even if I try to get him to eat more he refuses...but when I give him the amount on the bag (3/4 cup per day) he always acts hungry.

He was doing perfect on the small breed formula - his poo was firm and small every day. When I switched him to the regular just for puppies is when it started getting mushy, even after I only added like 10-25% of the regular kind to the small breed kind. When I called Wellness they said that the small breed formula is more dense with higher protein and mineral content because it's condensed into a smaller amount since smaller breed pups can't eat as much. They told me that's why the guidelines said to feed a smaller amount. Since the regular was making his poo mushy and I was only up to 25% of the regular and still at 75% small breed, I decided just to stop the regular and keep him on the small breed for now. Even when I had tried putting in 3/4 cup at one sitting in his bowl, he wouldn't eat more than 1/2 cup, so I think he knows his limits. He does eat VERY fast though. Since going back to 100% small breed, he is having a mixture of firm/soft poo...this morning for example he went and a firm piece came out followed by a little bit of mush. I do not want to make any changes whatsoever until I get him back to normal, so I even stopped the treats I was giving him in case he's allergic to one of the ingredients.

The regular puppy formula is the same flavor, just bigger kibbles with slightly different nutrient content. I also compared all of the ingredients and the only thing I could find different was that it had garlic powder and canola oil in it - so I am wondering if he might be allergic to one of those ingredients?

This website I found has a food calculator and recommends he gets 513 kcals per day for his weight/age, which is about 1.1 cups of the small breed food. Could that be why he's still hungry when I'm only feeding him 3/4 cup per day? He is very active even when he's inside. I want to keep him on the small breed I think since that was working good for him until I decided to try and switch - now I just want him back to normal and then I can work on adjusting the amounts. Some of the treats I was giving him do have wheat in them, so I wonder if he's allergic to that?

You can work with the amounts he gets, mine always act hungry, and are right there at feeding time. If the amount you are feeding him isn't making him fat then you are fine. If he starts putting on too much weight then you can reduce it. The amount fed depends entirely on the amount of exercise he gets that works it off. Our Briar Rose can easily eat 1/4 cup three times a day and not gain an ounce, Jack gets 1/8 cup 3 times a day and I still have to be careful with his weight, so sometimes I have to give less than what he normally gets, sometimes he gets a little more.
