Normally, it would be canned pumpkin for constipation. You say she passed a small amount of runny stool. With the hot weather, she may not be drinking enough, and without adequate hydration, the stool may be hard.
I'd check with the vet to make sure that there isn't a minor obstruction, and they may recommend an "assist" (read enema) if it is just a very hard stool not passing.

Canned pumpkin is what we use too. Make sure it 100% pumpkin though not the pie filling. I also tend to add a bit a extra water to their food when I make their "gravy" if I don't think they are getting enough water. And as Bobbi says check with the vet, it never hurts. I hope she feels better soon.

thanks!!
couldn't remember for the life of me.
I have been trying to hydrate her, because she is not drinking as often as the other two. I give her cucumbers and any watery veggie. I am wondering now if it's the cucumbers??

I use canned pumpkin as well. I've also used cooked sweet potatoes. You could mash them with some extra water to help with hydration.

Veggies (bulk - pumpkin is the default but green beans or other veg is fine too) and oil (fish oil is the default but you can drizzle olive oil on her food too).

I like the canned pumpkin but it's impossible to find in the stores down here now. Green beans, brussel sprouts, snap peas have also worked for Mitzy...oh and beans...kidney beans, black eyed peas, lima beans., etc. You can also check with vet if it's really bad, they might have something...

Mary Beth, it is just not the south, but there is no pumpkin up north either. If you go on the Libby site there was a shortage up pumpkin last year due to flooding and there will benone in the stores until October. I am going to stock up then, just in case. You can buy a can of pumpkin on eBay for $20 ! lol !

If anyone has a Sprouts (similar to a Whole Foods) store, check their canned veggie section, I did find pumpkin there (Farmer's Market brand, organic) for about $2.50 a can. (Gee, maybe I shoud sell it on eBay and make a profit!    I do keep it on hand for when one of the dogs has tummy trouble....mixed with baby rice cereal and a little canned dog food, it can be beneficial for both constipation OR diarrhea, and most dogs like the taste.

Another thing you can try is a little mineral oil...I had a dumb Siberian Husky that ate a bunch of sand once (managed to dig up one of the patio blocks in her kennel) and it blocked her up good. Vet recommended mineral oil, it did the job...she pooped oily sand for 2 days...

I do tend to agree with the thought of dehydration. One thing you can do to get more fluid into dogs in the hot weather is freeze some low sodium (excess salt is not good for them) beef or chicken broth in ice cube trays and give them the tasty ice cubes for a treat. Mine love 'em!

We do the canned pumpkin too. Also, you can rub her belly clockwise for constipation and counter-clockwise for diarrhea. It sounds silly, but it works!
