Are allergies common to Ratties? All summer, Rocky has been rubbing his eyes with the sides of his paws. He doesn't do this during the winter so I'm assuming this is due to some sort of seasonal allergy. He also seems to be quite allergic to bees. Last summer, he got stung 4+ times in the face and neck. He swelled up so much that he looked like a bull terrier. He didn't have any serious reactions other than a lot of swelling and discomfort. A couple of weeks ago he had a similar reaction. Only this time, we have no idea what he got into. We had our little bull terrier back again. Unfortunately, this time the benadryl only made him sleepy, it didn't reduce the swelling. I'm wondering if this is a common thing for Ratties and if so, are there other, more serious, reactions I should look out for?

Have you discussed this with your vet? Some dogs seem more allergic to bees than others (same as humans) and, though I'm not positive, may run the same risk of serious complications - you will have to ask your vet about what you should do if he is seriously swelling, especially if the Benadryl is not helping as it should.

As for seasonal allergies and itchiness, a lot of ratties exhibit watering/itchy eyes and seems to be more prevelant in the high pollen times - a lot of people here use children's benadryl I believe to deal with these allergies as well.

It's nice to "see" you and Rocky again He's gorgeous!!! How is he doing other than the allergies?

Our vet claims that allergies are one of few health issues that many ratties have.  Our poor Ralph has a bad case of them, which require him to be steriods most of the summer.  Good thing we live in the area of the country where it is cold 9 months out of the year!!!  Ralph licks his paws raw when his alergies flare up and also gets itchy watery eyes.  Benadryl seems to keep things in check during the low pollen months, the vet said you can also get shots for dogs when the over the counter drugs don't work.

It's certainly true that allergies are just about the only health issue in ratties - they are a very hardy breed. My Mayfly has allergies to grass pollen and her eyes water at certain times of the year if she's in the grass much - I just give her the children's disolvable Benedryl. She is also VERY allergic to fire ants, she's been bitten twice and gotten very sick....both times the vet gave her prednisone, Panalog cream, eye drops and told me to use the Benedryl.

Another thing is that some ratties are allergic to corn and corn is used as a filler in many low-quality dog foods. I've heard this can cause them to lick their paws, don't know if that's true. Just a thought though - you may want check the ingredients in the food you're feeding.

Hmmmm, that's interesting MB.  I'm thinking, now that you mention it, since changing to Natural Balance KS is not licking her paws as much.  But, I used Nutro before and it doesn't have corn.  I have her on the allergy formula NB now.  ????? I wonder if that's helped.

Maybe the allergy formula is helping her. Skipper licks his paws, too, and he's never had corn since living with us. I've heard of dogs being allergic to poultry and other things, too....maybe that causes the licking? It's not seasonal with Skipper, but could just be a habit he has and not an allergy. Interesting that the allergy formula might have helped Katie, maybe I should try that next time.

I've tried both the duck/pototo and fish/potato - both are allergy formulas and she really likes them.

I have also read that it can take 6-12 weeks for a change in diet to make a difference. Maybe it is working! That would be great. Jack loves the duck and potato!

I've been feeding the NB Premium Weight Control but I think I'll switch back to the duck/potato.
