Hi,

My ratties don't have liver damage, but my mom's chihuahua is having increasingly high liver enzymes.  The pills they give for that has not helped.  They're treating it as possible infection.  Anyone have any experience with liver damage?

I'd appreciate anything!

Joy

How old?? If it is a young dog it could possibly be a shunt. They are fairly common in small dogs, only fixed by surgery. Jenny/JenMax has a rattie with liver issues, maybe she will be able to help?

I had a Lab many years ago with liver problems. They determined she had steroid induced Cushing's Disease. One reason I am not an advocate of giving streroids to itcy dogs on a regular basis (yes, sometimes it's the only thing and I don't mind the occasional shot -- just not routinely, as they used to do). Has your mom's dog been checked for Cushing's? Cushing's is not only brought on by steroids -- it can be hereditary too.

The chi. is 8 years old...I don't think she's been tested for Cushing's.  My mom has been going to this doctor for 30 years and he knows that WHATEVER he tells her, she'll worry about.  He probably won't tell her all the possibilities until the antibiotics are up (3 weeks).  Then we'll see.

Thanks and keep 'em coming.
