My co-worker who has three HUGE airedales, switched her dogs to the Salmon & Brown Rice kibble made by Nature's Variety last week.  I forgot to mention to her that she needed to mix the new food 1/3 with 2/3 of her regular food for the first week.... 1/2 with 1/2 of her regular food for the next week... 2/3 with 1/3 of her regular food for the next week... and switch over entirely to the new food by the 4th week.   She started giving her dogs the new food 100% immediately and they all ended up with bad "squirts".  It was my fault.  She didn't know and I forgot to tell her.  (another senior moment).

Once she mixed the new kibble with the Nutro she's been feeding for a long time... they had no issues at all.

The Salmon kibble is VERY high protein and switching a dog 100% to a new food can cause intestinal "issues" such as what she experienced.

Just wanted to post this friendly reminder here, because I know many of our members are in the process of trying different foods because of the recent recalls.

Thanks for the reminder, Nora. My girls are both switched to 100% of the Natural Balance Ultra Premium dog food and they both are doing well - I did a "slow switch" from the Nutro Lamb & Rice. They both seem to be eating the NB brand a little better than they did the Nutro. I also bought some of the Potato & Duck dog treats and the LOVE those too

I think Miss Daisy would do well regardless of where she is or what she eats!
(glad the food switch has worked out well, Tracey!) I felt horrible because Linda's dogs got sick because I failed to mention this.

Hey, we all forget the details sometimes I'm sure her dogs will be just fine - it's not so much "sickness" as a little tummy "disagreement", right?

Thanks for the reminder! I have about 10 pounds of Nutro left so I think I'll go ahead and get whatever different food I'm going to get for Bob and start gradually adding a little to his Nutro.

Right... they were not "sick" in the technical sense of the word... but their stomachs were not used to the high protein content and ..........there ya go !!

Nora, that's awesome! Thanks for the reminder. When we first got Illyria, the people had her on Puppy Chow. We bought a small bag of that and switched her 100% over to Science Diet and she didn't have any problems at all. Now I want to give her something better, but I don't even know where I can get better quality food around here.

Jen - you can go on many of the high quality food websites and put in your zip code to find stores that carry it....most places like Petsmart don't carry the good stuff...like Canidea, EVO, Innova, Natural Balance, etc.

Canidae, Nature's Variety, Natural Balance... ALL good foods, but have much higher content of protein. The higher protein content is what can upset their systems .

That's what is a little scary for Max.  We keep wondering if he is getting too much food and protein. It is hard because of his multiple meals. .. He gets dry, wet and raw Natures Variety .He turned up his nose the first day with the raw but loves it now.

That may have been why all mine pooped a lot more while changing over to NB.  Now that I feed only NB they poop much less!

Question. It may be gross, but do their "squirts" look very very light in color... and almost like water? Because that's how Nibbler's is, but it just started today, and I've been mixin his food to switch for the past 2 weeks or so...

Mine never got the "squirts"....I don't know that changing foods would be the reason for diarrhea after 2 weeks of mixing....it usually happens sooner. Could there be some other cause? Something else he was eating in the last 24-48 hours?

No clue. I know it's gross, but earlier, his looked like a big clump of clearish mucus.
