There has been much discussion in our agility and obedience community recently concerning the fact that the tick/flea population evolves and can become immune or resistant to one type of chemical, and if that happens you might notice that what you use is no longer working. Several people I've discussed this with have told me that their vet recommends switching brands from time to time. Almost everyone uses Frontline Plus, but many are switching to K9 Advantix.
I purchased some K9 Advantix but haven't used it yet... I've always used Frontline Plus, and it has worked well for me, but because I've used it pretty much exclusively for many years... I too decided to switch.
Does anyone here use K9 Advantix? If so... has it worked well for your dogs? It's supposed to repel and kill fleas, ticks AND mosquitos.
I know this is an age-old subject, but because I've never used anything but Frontline Plus, I'm just curious as to what experiences others have had.
Thanks! |

Well, because we live in warm weather year-round we use flea protection all year and yes - I believe the fleas do become immune. Frontline Plus worked great for me for years but then gradually lost it's effectiveness. I switched to Advantage a couple of months ago and it's working great...so far. It may well loose it's effectiveness, too, over time and then I'll have to switch again. Haven't tried the K-9 Advantix but it may next on my list! |

| I have used K9 Advantix as long as they have had it on the market and I have had very good results with it. I like it the best because it does repel the mosquitos too. |

| I haven't used any flea/tick prevention on Bob and didn't notice any fleas on him (or me) until this Spring. I should probably start using something besides flea shampoo. |

I rarely need to use any type of flea product on Dar & Lucy, but when, or if, I start noticing fleas (and I check them daily in the summer months) I usually just use Bio-Spot. |

| I haven't had the need to use flea control products either, yet (knock on wood). |

I thought there was a recall on this brand some time ago. Something with regards to the active ingredient it contains. May want to check it out before using the product again.

Well, the K9 Advantix is 1/3 of the cost of Frontline Plus... and it's bought, paid for and at my house... so I'm going to try it. Was just curious about the experiences of others who might have used it. I have to use flea/tick control measures where I live... and with dachshunds being so low to the ground, they'll pick up a tick faster than other breeds I've learned. Thanks for the responses. I'll let you know how it works. Here's an interesting site I found.... says K9 Advantix is not as long-lasting or as effective as Frontline... and Frontline is waterproof. Guess I'll find out soon, eh? http://www.placervillevet.com/flea_control.htm |

Oh--thanks for the "heads up"---I WILL do my homework before buying any product for flea control, then. |

Nora, just an FYI. Advantix uses the same drug as Advantage, plus another medication(same company) . I believe it is Imacloprid? something like that...lol Anywho, this is what I believe Jack was sensitive to and had the tremors because of. Not saying that any other dog would, but I do feel that it is worth mentioning. These are little dogs with higher sensitivities than bigger ones, so it is something to keep an eye out for. I still haven't tried Frontline, but I think I will soon as it has been very warm and I know the fleas will be showing up soon!!! Still a little nervous though. Good luck with whatever you choose! |

I've used Avandtix for years, but because Abby interacts with our cat I had to give her Frontline. She seems to be tolerating it well. The other 2 dogs we have are on Avandtix. The recall as I remember was on the one that you buy at the grocery store...think it was Hartz. When we had our OE shaved a few weeks ago they found he had 3 tags...they called it this. Well the more I looked at them the more I became convinced they were ticks!! They were...got the cotton balls and rubbing alcohol out and got rid of them. I did call the vet and they said to just watch him and see if I see any side effects. My daughter who lives in Rochester found some on her dog and her vet put her on antibiotics. So it must be the different vets way of treating. Good Luck!! |

| I use Sentinel -- it takes care of heartworms and fleas, and though it doesn't say ticks, I have never seen a tick on any of my dogs. (Nor a flea). It is also what Stacey has all 15 (?) of her barn cats on and no fleas there either. Just don't know anything about Avantix |

I guess I'm struggling a little with the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" scenario. I may have reacted too quickly in purchasing another product when Frontline Plus is obviously still working for my dogs. It's easy to get caught up in all the "hype" during discussions. But I've purchased it and I'll try it when the Frontline is gone (have enough for one month's application). It's true too that with four dogs, I have to purchase the packaging that has six applications in it.. which is still not enough for two months... so I usually purchase two packages of six, totally 12. It's expensive... a little over $150 for 12 applications! Seems everytime I buy it, the price has increased again! I purchased some Frontline Plus once from an online vet "pharmacy" and it was cheaper... but it also didn't work, so I won't do that again. The K9 Advantix was about 1/3 the cost and there MAY be a reason for that. But it has also been my experience over the years that if a product is the most poplular...they jack the price up on it and seem to be able to get by with it. So... all of this to say....I'll just try it and see. I can always go back to Frontline if the K9 Advantix is not effective. Thanks for all the input !! |
