| If you look at the map of heartworm incidences, you will see that at the mouth of the columbia river between OR and WA there is a little circle of darker pink. This was caused by ONE PERSON who brought a large # of dogs from the southern states into the area that all had heartworms! It makes me really angry cause before that person brought these "rescued" dogs into our area we had very few incidences of heartworm and only had to use meds in the summer months when the mosquitos were flying. Now we use them year round. All the dogs that were rescued from this person had heartworms and other medical problems. Most had to be put down, some were able to be adopted by responsible people. This person lived three miles from me for a year before she went to Or where the humane society people did something about her. She had over a hundred dogs. Now the coyotes are our carrier population for heartworm. ALL BECAUSE OF ONE IGNORANT PERSON!!! |

She did not believe that her dogs needed medical care. She did not properly care for them either. I tryed and tryed to get the county that I live in to do something but we had no dog laws at the time and would not do anything!! At least when she went to OR they had dog laws in place. Maybe I am nuts about this but it really upsets me that one person could increase a disease so much in one area. I do treat my dogs but I wish that I did not have to be so worried about it. Ivomectrin is contra-indicated during pregnancy now. It can cause birth defects. But it is the only effective treatment and preventative. So there is alot to think about with the use for me. |
