Copied this off my news homepage this morning:
WASHINGTON -- There's more bad news for pet owners.
The Food and Drug Administration warned consumers Thursday not to use American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews manufactured and distributed by T.W. Enterprises, of Ferndale, Wash., because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.
The FDA also said Sunshine Mills Inc. is recalling dog biscuits made with imported Chinese wheat gluten. Testing has revealed the wheat gluten, a protein source, was contaminated with melamine, used to make plastics and other industrial products. Sunshine, of Red Bay, Ala., sells pet food and treats under its own brands as well as private labels sold by grocery, mass merchant and dollar stores, according to its Web site. A list of recalled products was not immediately available.
Also Thursday, Menu Foods, a major manufacturer of brand- and private-label wet pet foods, expanded its original recall to include a broader range of dates, the FDA said. Menu Foods was the first of at least six companies to recall pet foods and treats made with the contaminated ingredient.
Salmonella can cause serious infections in dogs and cats, and, if there is cross contamination, in people, especially children, the aged, and people with compromised immune systems, FDA said.
Salmonella can potentially be transferred to people handling these pet treats, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products, FDA said.
And I just heard the tv news guys talking about "Natural Balance" dog foods now being on the recall list. DANG! I just dont know what to buy anymore! |

| I wish I knew of a good recipe to whip up to feed Shiloh and our cats. Everytime I feed any of them now I'm scared to death that this could be their last meal. We've tried so many brands and I know that's not good either to keep changing like that. Man I hope they get this stuff settled soon! |

Um, I just got on the Pedigree site...the Lamb & Rice has Corn as the first ingredient, chicken by-product meal as the second! Lamb...is way down the list. Also, it's got corn gluten and wheat gluten in it! Maybe it hasn't been recalled yet but who knows - I dont' give my dogs anything with that stuff in it since the recall.
It's filled with fillers instead of meat and veggies..not something I would feed my dogs anyway. Also has the nasty dyes in it. JMO. Check out www.dogfoodproject.com

The Glutten thats in it, from what I understand is made by a different company other than Menu foods. |

Maybe...but you are feeding your pups sub-standard food. If you are o.k. with that, so be it. |

I was simply pointing out that your rattie is getting very low quality food. There are many high-quality foods that are not on the recall list! The fact that your dog is 12 years old and healthy pretty much means that he has very good genes and has not lived that long because of the food. Corn is filler - it's like feeding him junk food.
And BTW ratties are known as a hardy, healthy breed which often lives 17-18 years.
What you feed is certainly your own business. We are all feeding high quality foods NOT on the recall list (please note the thread you originally responded to was at the start of the pet food recall). If I came off as critical I apologize but I trying to provide information so that you could educate yourself on what is best for your rattie. |

No need to apologize, we all have our own opinions. I to do not mean to be critical. I was just trying to help people find dog food that was not on the pet food recall. According to the Oprah Show, a vet says we shoud be feeding our dogs raw meat.......simply because thats what they all ate in the wild, but if we cant feed raw meat cooked hamburger and rice would be fine. so , according to her vet, all dog food is bad.......because it has by produts in them. I am actually a proud owner of 6 RTs. My 3 oldest are 7, 8 and 12. I Love my Ratties. I cant get enough I guess. lol |
