arion, my 1 1/2 male, has started dragging his butt across the floor or bed or couch.  i had a fecal done and he doesn't have worms and his annuls have been...emptied. he has been on the same food for 6 months or so. his butt doesn't look red or swollen. and i am just stumped on what it might be.  any ideas?

That's usually a sign that his anal glands need to be expressed.  Butt dragging and excessive licking.

just a thought...my vet said that fleas really like the butt/hip area of dogs for some reason, and those bites can cause a lot of misery in that area.

yep i would say could be 1 or 2 things

1 anal glands need to be expressed ( not to be gross but did they get everything out)

2 check for fleas

anal glands... or how about a dirty tooshy?! sometimes i see small dirtiness on bryson... but only when he kind of poofs his "hole" out. just a thought... it could make him itchy!

My last vet told me rectal itching (dragging and licking) is a common symptom of allergies in dogs. All my dachsies with allergies did this on carpet and grass as a means of "scratching that itch". And like yours, they did the butt dragging even when their anal glands were just fine and they had no fleas. When the vet put them on meds for allergies, the licking/dragging would stop.

his annuls are completely drained. he doesn't have fleas (frontline). i haven't seen any pieces of stuff on his rear end. i have not changed his food recently or gave him any new treats. (i make all my fur-babies treats) i will talk to our vet about an allergies and let you all know how it goes.

the trick thing sounds right. every time he does it i rush over, pick him up, check him out, and then he gets to be carried around for awhile, while all the other dogs have to be on the ground staring up at him.  next I'll be having all of them dragging their butts just to be carried around like babies! lol       my poor couch and carpets.

the vet can't see me for a week and hes already said he doesn't think it could be a food allergies, but he will check. i have also asked him if i should switch their food but since they have all been on it since they were 1 year old and i love how they all look, to stay with the food my babies and i both like.( i also buy it from his office so I'm sure that helps, too)

What are you feeding him?  Does he lick his front paws a lot?  I had a dog with allergies and he was constantly licking his paws.

Back in the spring, Tinkerbelle got into some planting soil with fertilizer in it.  She had nitrogen poisoning and she dragged her butt til it was raw.  I think that it burned when she pooped and her she was just trying to wipe off the burn.  Maybe he got into something that is causing some burning.  Or maybe like you said...it's a new trick to get picked up.  If he has no other symptoms of illness it may be just that.

Good Luck!

he doesn't lick his paws or butt a lot. i feed them all purinea pro plan. bigger dogs get lamb and rice and smaller dogs, ratties, get beef and rice.(mesha can't eat the lamb without throwing up) i have noticed arion only drags his rear end when i'm in the room. if i'm not in the room and its just my hubby or kids in the room with him he doesn't do it. maybe its just me he does it for?
