I need help, we just got a rat terrer she is 3 months old. I just want to know if its ok for her to chew on a rawhide bone constantly without getting sick. or should I let her chew on it for a little while then take it away. any help would be great!

Bully sticks are better than raw hides because they can not get chunks off them the chucks off a rawhide can cause intestinal blockage. I would let her chew on it for a while and then take it away and check to make sure she is not getting big pieces off Welcome to the site and I would love to see pictures of your baby! I have a 5 month old little girl! We live in Seattle Washington!

get a Kong toy and fill it up with something tasty! They are way too smart! I am amazed at how fast little Ivy is learning. Also if you can get her all tuckered out it makes them sleep when in the kennel. She will learn that if you don't give in. She may try to train you just to let her out with that whine!!!

thanx for the great tips, she does sleep alot since she is a puppy. but we left her in the cage and i think she whinned the whole time and was exhausted when we got home. Its so hard not to give in to the whine, she is our first puppy.

I agree with what Ivy's mama said. I give Harley raw hides but only for a little while at a time. Welcome to the site! I can't wait to see pictures.  I also have a 5 month old rattie. He is also very smart and a quick learner.

well keep up the battle right now as I type Ivy has gone to bed all by herself in her kennel! She actually really loves her crate. It is her safety zone and while she will nap with someone on the couch when she is done for the day she heads for her kennel and "makes" her bed just right and it is lights out till morning! It is hard not to give in but in the long run it is so worth it, in the beginning I had to wait to let her out of the crate till she stopped the whining then she could come out. I never let her out when she was whining cause I did not want to reward the whining.

oops missed that one yep you can mix the food. I was so afraid I would squish Ivy when she was tiny so I made her sleep in her crate and I don't think she could change her sleeping habits now!

yea it is difficult but i'm so willing to make the effort, seeing how my friends dogs get away with anything is ridiculous.

I figure we put in the time now when they are young and prevent issues we will have great dogs with minimal issues later so worth the effort!

Ohhhh! I so agree with you on that one. My sister's rattie gets to do anything he wants.  He'll be 8 months old in a week and he isn't even house trained! Tsk tsk tsk.. Lol Sorry to ramble on but I agree with you big time on that one. Harley is NOT going to be the misbehaving one of our rattie family.  Don't get me wrong, Harley is spoiled but he knows what he can and can't do.

WELCOME!!!
Yes you can mix wet food with dry. There was a recent thread about wet food that might provide some helpful info too. Crating is a VERY good thing to do especially for young ratties like yours. Not only does it keep your things and house safe from potty accidents, chewing etc, it keeps your rattie safe too. And although she may whine, she will get used to being in there and it will become a comfortable place for her to be- like her own den. Kongs filled (no more than a TBSP) with all natural raw peanut butter, then frozen overnight help it last a little longer.

I have 2 ratties and they both sleep in the bed with me and are pretty dang spoiled, but they are well behaved and know there are rules to follow. Good luck, I can't wait to see pics! We love pics around here- especially puppy pics!!
