I know that puppys are clingy especially ratties i heard they pick one person and cling. I just am unsure or where the line is from clingy to anxiety. Any time chance is not around me he just whines and cries, i can walk into the bathroom and shut the door and he will stand at the end of the hallway and just cry and whine.... i feel horrible. If i step out to get the mail the same thing at the top of the stairs sounding like he is dying. Also, if i am sitting on the couch and i dont allow him to be up there or if i dont let him lay on my feet its the same thing, whining and crying.......Anytime he is in his cage though he only whines for may 10-15 minutes then goes to sleep. I am just very unsure on if this is something i need to worry about or if its just normal with the breed/puppies. My cocker spaniels NEVER did this so im confused. Is this something i need to talk to his NEW!!(for the ones who have read my other posts) vet about??? |

I'm sure people can and will give better advice, but I just want to know how you react to this whining? Sophie whines for me too, but I don't think it's seperation anxiety with her. Radar has seperation anxiety and it's different. I think it's more like when a kid whines "Mommmmyy.... I want you here NOW" or "I want in there NOW". This is just from observing her though, and I'm not completely sure. But it's one of those things where I just try to ignore her as best as I can and not run to assure her or anything, but also not avoid her and just come back, so if it's seperation anxiety, she knows I'll come back (but she often does this when I'm in sight, just inaccessible, so I think it's just trying to get attention, not seperation anxiety with her). But if it is seperation anxiety, the best thing to do is leave, and then come back... leave a little longer, and then come back (we're talking 20 seconds, then a minute, etc). Repeat hundreds of times over several days. And eventually, they'll learn... Or, if they're like Radar, you just have to know when you can leave him and when you can't. He's fine if left inside, but if left alone outside he begins trembling and gets terrified. So he just never goes outside, even though we have a fenced in backyard, unless we're there. Otherwise he's fine and none destructive, so it's very mild... And that's another thing. Severe cases of seperation anxiety involve destructiveness or obsessiveness. So if it's just whining, even if it's seperation anxiety, it's mild, so keep that in mind. He might act like it's killing him, but it's really not. Sometimes that whining sounds so much like crying you just want to coddle them, I know... |

| I would just ignore it as much as possible and not reward the whining and crying. Reward when he is calm and just waiting for you. When Ivy use to do that I would make sure I had a bully stick or her Kong ready when I had to leave even if it was to get the mail and give it to her before I left and that kept her busy while I was a way for a few minutes. |

| you have to be careful not to reinforce his worried whine cause that will make him think he has some thing to worry about. I was just matter a fact with Ivy like I know you will miss me but here is something to take your mind off it while I am a way and when I came back I waited till she was settled before praising her or interacting with her. |

| yea he gets bored with it, he will play with it for about a minute and then is like ok whats next, i have done peanut butter, the actually stuff you buy to put in it and just regular treats..... i think my dog is WAY to smart for his own good lol. I did find a puppy teething bone that he REALLY liked and i have been working with that i just dont want him to get sick of it. |

You said he took a bite out of it? i dont think its possible to take a bite out of a bully stick...not trying to argue at all...just trying to make sure you got the right thing. |

oh ok gotcha...again, not trying to be confrontational...hmm..thats so weird,,mine LOVE bully sticks!! hehehe... well,,,i guess its a good thing that he only whines for a few minutes and then goes to sleep in his crate...i woudl guess that the more consistent you are with the crating, the more comfortable he will get and the less he will whine...good luck and i wish I had better advice...hang in there!! |

| good idea for you to try might be chicken strips. they are good for them, with lots of protein and it take a little bit to eat to. my girls love them to. you can get them at most pet supply stores(petsmart) and you can get a small bag just incase he doesn't like them to. i hope this helps. some people don't recommend raw hides but my girls love them. i use chew ez rolls, and it take forever for them to eat them. you could try them to. |
