Hi.

My little boy has had some itchy skin issues this time of year and I assume it is due to weed pollen. He has been licking and chewing his rear feet nonstop for the past week. One of them is raw from his constant licking.

I took him to the vet yesterday, he got a cortizone injection and I was given some antibiotic pills.

He is still licking is feet. Not as much as before the vet - but still quite a lot.

I am considering giving him benadryl.Has anyone done this? If so, can you recommend an amount or dose? Like maybe half a tablet? or any other OTC meds you have tried for allergy skin issues?

Thanks

gwacie

My vet has one of mine on benedryl this time of year. She is 10lbs and gets 1 tablet a day. She no longer gets drowsy from it since it is a fairly regular med for her. Some years the benedryl alone is not enough but usually that works for her. Also consider giving him a nice bath with some baking soda in the water and let him stand in it for a few minutes so that his feet get a good washing. This will help for a little while.

Benadryl is fine for them. I just wanted to add that it is usually 1mg/lb, so I use either the children's liquid or childrens chewables.

It really takes a lot for dogs to OD on Benadryl ... at one point, Sasha (at 16 pounds) was taking 2 (25mg) tablets 3 times a day...unfortunately, they build up a tolerance after a while...

I was looking for the children's Benadryl and couldn't find the tablets. The pharmacist told me they were re-packaging and couldn't get them for a while.I tried the liquid and it choked my Scooter. So I cut a 25mg in half, half in the morning and the other half in the evening. I can really tell if I skip a tablet, the itching and chewing is terrible. I really feel sorry for these ratties with allergy's, they are miserable.

How much does Scooter weigh?  Regular Benadryl will be fine - if it's really bad, try 1 tablet twice a day - one in the morning and one at night...

Maybe this is the problem I've been having with Lilly. She chews her underside and it's all pink now, her feet too. I may try the Benadryl and see how that goes.

I wanted to report back on how things have been going.

Benadryl seemed to work OK for a few days, but lost its effectiveness quickly with my dog.
He returned to licking and chewing his paws making them raw.
I called the vet yesterday and he gave me Temaril pills.
I started him on that last evening and so far so good.
It has been effective.
Hope it continues to work.
