okay im super confused over the whole dog food thing, i used to think goodlife receipe was okay and beneful but now i know, i bought can so what about the refrigerated dog food in a roll?? not the treat kind the acuall food? hows that stuff? I read other thread but no info on that stuff. I just don't want to get my girls on a food they like and then find out its really bad for them like the beneful thing, grrr see good life receipe was suppose to have no bad stuff, so was beneful, but i dont understand how they can say that right on the bag and you can read on the back that it says all kinds of bad stuff...i would love to do a raw diet but i don't have the time, maybe if someone has a receipe i could try and make for the whole week that would work.plus minnie is almost one and sadie is 2, so my vets just like feed sadie puppy food, big no no for sadie she is over weight as it is......any help would be great! and info on the "pattie" thing would be good to. my vet is clueless, im changing vets to, but she was just like feed them science diet or iams. **sigh** im surrounded by morons hear. my hubby is like ol'roys is like 20 dollars cheaper. then i explained for 20 mins about the whole mc donalds verses healthy well balanced meal. he was like i though dog food was just dog food. Lol   he knows different now.

I would say that it would depend on the food itself whether the "roll" food is any good. It does cost more than dry kibble though. Nature's variety makes a frozen and freeze dried raw product that is great if you want to go that route. As far as feeding one puppy food and the other regular, you dont have to do that. Being that Minnie is almost one, they can both be on adult food. A lot of the higher quality foods are all-stage foods anyways. You can check out dogfoodanalysis.com for specific food reviews or dogfoodproject.com for general information.

I'm not sure I know about any refrigerated foods. Do you have a brand name? Or are you talking about the Natural Balance that comes in a log (is very firm) and once opened needs to be refrigerated- is that what you're referring to?

I am NO fan of the Natural Balance rolls.  Why they feel the need to add sugar, especially that high up in the ingredient list, is beyond me.  Actually it's clear that they add it so dogs will eat it.  Obviously they have skimped on actual meat ingredients as the protein on a dry matter basis is only 18% and the fat is only 10%.  That is rediculously low for a non-dry food, or any food really.

What I have learned in my old age is that most vets are not extremely knowledgeable concerning canine nutrition. I've learned a LOT from a friend of mine who is a distributor for Nature's Variety. She has studied canine nutrition extensively, and is extremely knowledgeable. She doesn't really "push" Nature's Variety... but sells it if someone wants it. She does a booming business... but her primary concern is the nutritional well-being of the dogs.

I switched to Nature's Variety raw patties about a year and a half ago, and I couldn't be more thrilled. For the first time in three years, my dogs don't have to have their teeth cleaned (a savings of approximately $350 which will buy a LOT of raw patties), and my little 8-lb, 8-1/2 year old doxie, doesn't scratch herself all the time due to food allergies I've been fighting all her life.

I'll NEVER feed anything else again...
