Hi all,

Just a quick question, my Harley has black nails so I cannot see the quic to trim them.

Has anyone else ran into this? How do I know where to trim?

Thanks.

Black nails are hard to trim. Mitzy has a couple and I just take the very end of the tips off, plus I walk her a lot on pavement and that helps keep them trimmed. Some people use a dremel tool but I dont' know if that helps with the black nail.

I'm not sure what to tell you. We just try to guestimate really. I've never cut her on the black nails, but I've cut her regular one before where I thought it was actually safe... it's so difficult. More of her nails are turning black now.
Just wanted to say good luck. And if you find a good remedy, let me know.

I learned this in grooming class. You take a little off at a time until you start to see a little black dot in the center of the nail. That is the beginning of the quick. Then use a dremmel to take the sharp edges of the edge of the nail so that they don't scratch you. Hope it helps.

Thanks I think I will give it a try she is getting some claws on her, .

If not I will just have to take her to a groomer.

I too just take the tips off. Charlie has some nails that are half white and half black and they are kind of tricky too. Hopefully she doesnt act like mine do when I trim their nails, they scream and wiggle like Im trying to kill them!

I also take a little bit off of each nail. I do it late in the day when Abby is sleepy...easier. The black nails are tricky...even the vet cut to close. Seem to be fine taking just a little off. The more I have done them the easier it seems to get and the more she seems to accept it. I seem to have to do hers about every 2 weeks. How often do others have to do theirs?

every two weeks?? WOW
I don't know either i have only had Izzy for about 3 weeks now. But the vet just did her's while they had her out from her scope? She has one toe nail that is really bad it is white but not clear anymore and very crooked?

Yes, what Teddy's Mom said is good advice. And, every two weeks is about right. The longer the nail grows, the longer the vein or "quick" grows and then you can't keep them as short. Also, have some stiptic (did I spell that right) powder on hand it you don't accidently get a "bleeder"

Found this at a dog site I often go to:

Trimming Nails

When you groom the feet you start with the nails.

Before trimming nails be sure to identify the pink part, or quick.

If your dog has black toenails it is hard to identify where the quick. If you look at the anatomy of the underside of the nail you will see a triangle. The end of this triangle is generally where the quick begins.

When you have clipped the nail if the tip has a waxy look you are close to the quick. If it looks dry then you can remove a bit more. If you do hit the quick you can apply pressure and stop the blood quickly with a styptic stick used for shaving or a styptic powder that can be found at any pet supply store. Just remember it is a long way from their heart they will not lose much blood and trimming the nails protects the foot from serious injuries.

Lift the front foot up and forward being careful not to over extend the leg. Clip off the end of the nail.

After seeing the diagram I have enough confidence to give it a try!

Wish me luck!
