So we went to visit my mom in san diego and my mom feeds her chi ceasers dog food, basically thats the only thing she will eat, we tried all kinds of food with her, ceasers is not my choice. so i brought one home, with me on accident and know my girls wouldn't eat it. so i put it in a bowl and went to put it outside for the stray kittys, but before i got to it my hubby put it on the floor and the girls had eaten all of it! I was shocked, they have never eaten wet food before, and i have tried all kinds to. anyway my question is how bad is ceasers dog food, and what is a good wet doog food i could start them on, i was thinking maybe mixing half and half to get them to like it more. I started feeding them when i get home from work, so they have plenty of time to go outside and do there bizness. any info would help thank u all..

I had to mix in Beneful wet food with Pixie's food at first. I think maybe all she'd ever eaten was wet food and she wouldn't touch the dry, and when she did, she picked at it for hours. She's totally on dry now; it only took about 3 weeks (I think).

If your dogs are eating their kibble with no problems, personally, I wouldn't mix in wet food.

If you're dead set on it, there are certainly better kinds than Caesar and Beneful, but Beneful happened to be what worked for Pixie. I knew it was short term, so I wasn't very concerned. Had it become a long-term deal, I definitely would have found some wet food of better quality than what she got. When Sue (the lab) gets constipated, I will give her 1/2 a can of some all-natural/organic wet food (whichever kind I can find, the pickin's are sparse around here), and occasionally she gets a can of Iams, which I'm NOT proud to say, but sometimes its the highest quality I can find here, which isn't saying much!!! It definitely moves her

I went to a place called Complete PetMart in Huntington, WV, and I couldn't believe the variety of dogfood they had. They had Blue, Innova, Canidae, and tons more GREAT food. I'd never seen it all in one place. They even had a raw diet freezer! I nearly dropped my teeth, and they're all attached!

is there a specific reason why you want them on wet food?

just worried cause they don't eat they dry very much. I give them a 1/2 cup each of dry three times a day and they don't eat it, so this week i started leaving 1 cup in there bowl all day and the food is still there when i get home, actually its been there for 3 days now. the vet says there nothing wrong with them, they just don't like the dry food, plus its so hot hear in the desert, so im confused now....

gotcha...have you tried mixing in some water? or sometiems mine go through a "non-hungry" phase where they turn their nose up to the food. I put a TEENY sprinkle of parm cheese on it...it has a strong smell and mine SCARF it up when I do that

I'll have to try that, good idea. i tried water they look at me like im crazy. but my girls LOVE veggies, sadie and minnie get 2 chicken strips (dehydrated ones), 2 baby carrots, one leaf of lettuce and a few blueberrys/slice of peach. twice a week, usually on my day off. they love lettuce and baby carrots. but i think im going to change vets cause she has me feeding them iams puppy and sadie is 2 and minnie is 10 months. then she yells at me and says sadie is obeast and minnie is fine but minnie is super skinning to me. shes a really mean vet to she put a muzzle on sadie and minnie every time, and is very ruff. I hate it! she told me minnie was worthless, im like what the hell?..... she just looked at me and said she is not breedable and she is not akc. im like so what... you only do dogs that are perfect. she tried to tell me minnies underbite is my fault to. and she tryed talking me into getting her tail docked, IM NOT STUPID! she is to old and i like her tail! just a bad situation all the way around with her.... but back to my point im just worried there not eating enough. sadie eats chew ez and raw hide bones but minnie likes bullys and chicken strips. im thinking about buying that fresh dog food that comes in a roll, they have it in the frig on the pet ille. i just need tips and advice im sorry for taking so much space....

Minnezmomma, have you read any of the other posts on here? There have been discussions about brands like Beneful, Iams, wet food vs dry, affordable dog foods etc. If you haven't yet, I suggest it because there is a lot of good info on those threads.

Personally, I don't belive in only feeding kibble. I don't see how it can be healthy for cat or dog. Kibble was created to be convenient for humans, not to benefit pets in any way. I only feed mine food that I prepare now- no more kibble! (unless it's an emergenciy somehow and I just can't prepare their food.) I think wet food is very beneficial. Could you imagine eating only dried foods?

We always mix in wet (Natures Variety) canned food along with their kibble. They love it and you can change up the flavors. So funny, one morning Guy got up early and fed them, well he only gave them kibble and not wet with it. He comes upstairs and tells me "something is wrong with the dogs, they won't eat". So I go down and see them standing their looking at their bowls like "Ummmm HELLO, we are missing something here". I put in some can and they ate away. Proof they like it.

On the weekends we are feeding them homemade good and if the raw patties come to Pet Supplies Plus soon we will be going to that as well.

I've never had a case of the runs with any of the wet foods I've given my dogs. I think as long as you are feeding high quality food, add it to the diet slowly- no sudden complete changes you won't have any problems either. If you do, it should only last a BM or 2 at most if taking those precautions.

what about the refrigerated dog food in a roll?? not the treat kind the acuall food? hows that stuff? I read other thread but no info on that stuff. see good life receipe was suppose to have no bad stuff, so was beneful, but i dont understand how they can say that right on the bag and you can read on the back that it says all kinds of bad stuff...i would love to do a raw diet but i don't have the time, maybe if someone has a receipe i could try and make for the whole week that would work..

I make up batches ahead of time to use M-F, and usually do the cooking for the day on the weekends when I have more time. Mine get different things on the weekends too, like their raw egg. Although I'm not at the raw food stage yet (maybe never- sitll undecided really), I can't imagine it is any more time consuming than kibble if you buy the prepackeaged/premeasured patties and just thaw them ahead of time.

I feed all raw... Nature's Variety raw patties... I'll never go back to feeding anything else if I can help it.

For canned food, I buy Wellness 95% Meat - Salmon.  The dogs love it.

The dog food rolls are pretty high in salt, probably to help preserve it.

Favorite food here is home made. It's easy and we freeze it into ice cube trays then bag it.

canned plain pumpkin
cooked rice or oatmeal
cooked mixed veggies
raw ground turkey, beef or chicken (do not cook)
optional   gizzards, hearts, livers

Mix good pack into icecube trays and freeze.
For puppies we add Ester-C and Sea Meal to the mix

They also get kibble from Avoderm. The pack likes the lamb and brown rice.

The Freshpet Rolls have a pretty high salt content as well. Other than that, they look pretty good, except for the rice bran -cheap alternative to whole rice. I wouldn't get the Adult Chunky Beef, Vegetable and Rice dinner because it has Soy Flour in it. I still don't think I'd use any of the other rolls as a main diet either though, since the amount of salt worries me a bit. I heard some people use them as treats or mix some of the roll with the kibble though.

If you'reconcerned about the quality or ingredients of the wet foods you are trying, you can always add home made foods to their kibble diet.  That way they get a variety, moisture (which is good) and you know exactly what's in the foods you are feeding if you're making it.  Just an idea.
