Hi! I'm new to this forum. I just got my first Rattie (and 1st dog) 2 weeks ago. I first started her on Purina One but it seemed to give her the runs so I switched her to Beneful and she's fine now. Anyone know anything about Beneful? Is it a good choice for dog food? TIA!

Hi and welcome to the site. We'd love to see some pics....

I'm gonna be honest when I tell you that personally, I think Beneful is not a good food at all. Same with anything Purina. Sorry.

BENEFUL INGREDIENTS
Ground yellow corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal, whole wheat flour, animal fat preserved with mixed-tocopherols (form of Vitamin E), rice flour, beef, soy flour, sugar, sorbitol, tricalcium phosphate, water, salt, phosphoric acid, animal digest, potassium chloride, dicalcium phosphate, sorbic acid (a preservative), L-Lysine monohydrochloride, dried peas, dried carrots, calcium carbonate, calcium propionate (a preservative), choline chloride, added color (Yellow 5, Red 40, Yellow 6, Blue 2), DL-Methionine, Vitamin E supplement, zinc sulfate, ferrous sulfate, Vitamin A supplement, manganese sulfate, niacin, Vitamin B-12 supplement, calcium pantothenate, riboflavin supplement, copper sulfate, biotin, garlic oil, thiamine hydrochloride, pyridoxine hydrochloride, thiamine mononitrate, folic acid, Vitamin D-3 supplement, menadione sodium bisulfite complex (source of Vitamin K activity), calcium iodate, sodium selenite.

Ground yellow corn - should NEVER be the first ingredient. Ingredients must be listed in order of amount (highest to lowest).

phosphoric acid - A clear colorless liquid, H3PO4, used in fertilizers, detergents, food flavoring, and pharmaceuticals. A harmless but unnecessary ingredient, used in inexpensive, poor quality dog food as flavoring, emulsifier and discoloration inhibitor. Used for example as a flavoring for Coca Cola.

soy flour - AAFCO: The finely powdered material resulting from the screened and graded product after removal of most of the oil from selected, sound, cleaned and dehulled soybeans by a mechanical or solvent extraction process. Much of the nutritional value is lost already during processing of the grain to flour. May contain particles of hull, germ, and the offal from the tail of the mill.

animal fat  - AAFCO: Obtained from the tissues of mammals and/or poultry in the commercial processes of rendering or extracting. It consists predominantly of glyceride esters of fatty acids and contains no additions of free fatty acids. If an antioxidant is used, the common name or names must be indicated, followed by the words "used as a preservative".

Note that the animal source is not specified and is not required to originate from "slaughtered" animals. The rendered animals can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on

animal digest - AAFCO: A material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed. If it bears a name descriptive of its kind or flavor(s), it must correspond thereto.

A cooked-down broth made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals. The animals used can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: "4-D animals" (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on.

chicken by-product meal - AAFCO: Consists of the dry, ground, rendered, clean parts of the carcass of slaughtered chicken, such as necks, feet, undeveloped eggs, and intestines -- exclusive of feathers except in such amounts as might occur unavoidably in good processing practices.

Chicken byproducts are much less expensive and less digestible than the chicken muscle meat. The ingredients of each batch can vary drastically in ingredients (heads, feet, bones etc.) as well as quality, thus the nutritional value is also not consistent. Don't forget that byproducts consist of any parts of the animal OTHER than meat. If there is any use for any part of the animal that brings more profit than selling it as "byproduct", rest assured it will appear in such a product rather than in the "byproduct" dumpster.

corn gluten meal - AAFCO: The dried residue from corn after the removal of the larger part of the starch and germ, and the separation of the bran by the process employed in the wet milling manufacture of corn starch or syrup, or by enzymatic treatment of the endosperm.

An inexpensive by-product of human food processing which contains some protein but serves mainly to bind food together. It is not a harmful ingredient but should not rank high in the ingredient list of a quality product.

salt - Also listed as Sodium Chloride. A colorless or white crystalline solid, chiefly sodium chloride, used extensively in ground or granulated form as a food seasoning and preservative. May also appear in ingredient list as "Iodized Salt" (iodine supplement added), "Sea Salt" (as opposed to salt mined from underground deposits) or "Sodium Chloride" (chemical expression).

While salt is a necessary mineral, it is also generally present in sufficient quantities in the ingredients pet foods include. Just like for humans, too much sodium intake is unhealthy for animals. In poor quality foods it is often used in large amounts to add flavor and make the food more interesting.

sugar, sorbitol - A white, sweetish, crystalline alcohol, C6H8(OH)6, found in various berries and fruits or prepared synthetically and used as a flavoring agent, a sugar substitute for people with diabetes, and a moisturizer in cosmetics and other products.

Sugar or sweetener is an absolutely unnecessary ingredient in pet foods, added to make the product more attractive. Continuous intake can promote hypoglycemia, obesity, nervousness, cataracts, tooth decay, arthritis and allergies. Pets also get addicted to foods that contain sugars, so it can be a tough piece of work to make them eat something healthier.

menadione sodium bisulfite complex - Vitamin K3, synthetic vitamin K.
Feed grade. Also listed as Menadione Dimethyl-Pyrimidinol Bisulfate, Menadione Dimethyl-Pyrimidinol Bisulfite, Menadione Sodium Bisulfate Complex, Menadione Sodium Bisulfite and Menadione Sodium Bisulfite Complex.

Unnecessary ingredient in dog food. This synthetic version of vitamin K has not been specifically approved for long term use, such as in pet food. It has been linked to many serious health issues. More Details

I'm glad that you asked about this. I am fairly new to the site as well and i do feed my dog Beneful.  I'm glad i found out it may not be the best thing and plan on switching over soon.  I do wonder if anyone has any better dog foods, I have been through 4 other dog foods and beneful is the only one Jasmine will eat, she is very picky.

I feed Prince a dog food called V-Dog. Its vegan dog food, and it doesnt have a lot of junk in it like a lot of the dog foods you buy in stores do. Heres  a link to the website. They have a store locator. But you can also buy online

Oh, she's gorgeous Love the shirt!!!! What's her name and how old? How'd you come to get her?? Sorry....we always want to hear their "stories"!!

If you click on "My Profile" towards the upper right hand area of the site and then click on "Edit Profile" there's a section to upload your avatar. Just make sure it's in jpg format and must be in lowercase not CAPS. You may have to click on refresh a time or two for it to show up.

As for good quality foods, imo, there's nothing you can buy in your local grocery or "mart" store that's worth feeding them. I use Merrick (from Pet Supplies Plus) but there are many good choices and as ratties don't eat much, they are not that expensive. Nutro, Canidae, Innova, and others are fed by members here. I'm sure you'll get more suggestions. Many ratties tend to have grain, specifically corn, allergies, that can manifest itself in dry, flaky, itchy skin, and just generally poor coat condition.

Got it!! We adopted her. She's 2yo. She was at the pet store.... every weekend they have animal shelters come with their dogs up for adoption. DS is allergic to dogs but when he didn't have any problems with her.... we knew she was it! He still has no problems with her.  DH LOVES her to death. She's all rattie too! Very loyal, sweet, never barks really and follows me everywhere I go.

You were meant to find her, and she you, then Bless you for adopting!!!!! Where are you from, and had you seen/heard of rat terriers before? (Many haven't - LOL, including me before I got my Daisy).

Can I ask where you got the shirt? I'd love a Mickey Mouse one.

Oh, and her name is Lilly, I see.

Welcome again to both of you (and hubby too). Be forewarned, this place is HIGHLY ADDICTIVE.

I haven't heard of Ratties before, but did a lot of research on dogs for people with allergies. We wanted a dog but b/c of DS's allergy, didn't think we could get one. I got the tee on clearance at Petco. I got 3 other tees as well. What I love about her most is her tolerance. She's very tolerant of the kids (DD is 8 and DS is 5.5).... tolerant of anyone that comes to the house to visit. My sister ad her BF were in town visiting for a week last week and they loved her. They wanted to take her.  She is just such a sweet and loving dog. I am happy we got her.

She looks like a little sweetheart, that's for sure. She's got the rattie eyes

I've always loved dogs and have loved all the ones I've ever had, but my Daisy is just different...hard to explain. I call her my "heart dog" (as do some others here). They really are a very, very special breed, and in general very much oriented to their humans.

Congratulations!!!!

I also have another question. How much should I be feeding her?? B/C I read on the back of the bag that it should be about 1.5 cups/day but she seems to be starving with that amount. I gave her an extra feeding.... was doing about 1/2-2/3 cup 2x a day..... but now at 3x a day and she seems satisfied.  I tried to give her 1/3 of those Beneful wet food cups 1x a day with her dry feeding before I moved to 3x a day and that helped too. I just don't want to under feed her. Also.... when I only did 2x a day she would dig in the trash (have since put the trash in the garage) like she was starving.

How much does she weigh and does she seem to be at a good weight?

One of the things with lower quality food is they often eat more of it, and are still hungry, because it does not contain the necessary ingredients and they don't absorb what is in it as well. Plus foods like Beneful --- because of the salt, sugar, sorbitol, etc., can make a dog crave them more (and not for good reasons) and can become somewhat addicting (think Twinkies for humans).

I would find a better quality food that you think you and Lilly can both be happy with, and start by using the guidelines on the bag. Make sure to weigh her and ask the vet if she is at a good weight, or if she needs to gain or lose or stay where she is. Do you know what she was being fed before?

PS: My Daisy weights about 14-15 lbs (depending on the day, LOL) and eats about 1 cup of Merrick dry food per day, with a "goodnight biscuit" and occasional bully stick for treats. Some days she eats it all in rather short order and other days, she dallies with it and leaves some in the bowl.

I am going to bring back the big bag od Beneful tomorrow b/c I didn't even open it. I'm going to try Solid Gold. It seems a bit expensive tho. I might as well go organic. Any brands there I can try? She's about 15lbs I think. Not 100% sure. But she's def onthe thin side. She looks like she afford to gain a lb or two.

very very cute welcome--I have been feeding solid gold, but she never really loved it. I have started adding evo and she is nuts about that!! There is a discussion about evo in an other thread you can find---

Don't let them sell you the 15 pound bag of solid gold--or you will be stuck with tons of food if she does not like it. They have a small bag)

Welcome to the site!  Your baby is adorable.  You've been given some good advice here.   I have two females and began feediny them a raw meaty bones diet in January.  Organ meats and any veggies in AM and chicken breast and back pieces in PM.  Recreational beef rib bones occasionally.  I mix in other protein meaty bones from time to time as well.  They are doing just fine on that and have cleaner teeth and breath as a result.  Here are some links if you're interested in reading about this  diet.  It's not for everyone, and can get pricey these days, but trust me the dogs just LOVE it and it's what dogs were meant to eat!

Welcome!! She's a beautiful little girl.  And you're near Atlanta?  I'm in St. Marys, GA (south coastal) and we have several other members in Georgia.

As for high quality foods (I totally agree with Tracey..Beneful is one of the worst foods out there!) there were some good ones listed already but you can add Natural Balance and Nature's Variety to the list.  I feed Natural Balance to my whippet and fosters and recently switched to Nature's Variety Instinct for my "lollipop kids" (my 2 ratties and my rattie-mix).  It's grain free and I got the rabbit variety to see how they liked it...wow!  They LOVE it!

Doing the raw diet is probably very good for them but expensive and takes a lot of time to do it right....which I don't have working full time and adding a 40 minute commute on to that.  Another way to go is Nature's Variety Raw Patties....raw meat and veggies already made into a pattie for you to feed.

But really....just read the ingredients in anything you want to feed and educate yourself at sites like www.dogfoodproject.com and www.dogfoodanalysis.com

I feed the Nature's Variety raw patties... my dogs do wonderfully on it, and poop so little in comparison to when they were on kibble. I don't think I'll ever go back to feeding kibble.
Mary Beth -- how is the Instinct working out at your house? It's much higher in protein than what you were previously feeding... just wondered how the transition is going?
