Harley has a bit of a bald spot where his collar rubs on him. It's a leather HD collar that has a few studs and a couple of spikes on it. When we got it for him, his hair was fine, but now he has a bald spot there. At first I thought it might be a form of mange and then I got to thinking about how he scratches and how it rubs around his neck. It's not too tight or too loose. We don't use it for his leash, he has a harness, but I think he looks weird without a collar. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

I take it off of him every other day, just to give his skin a rest, but is there anything that would help? Like oatmeal shampoo?

what kind of collar? How well trained is he? We don't keep collars on teh dogs all the time and the ones who wear them have loose ones so they don't rub. BUT we have no kids and the dogs are very well trained not to rush the doors.

This is the collar: http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2751452  And he's trained pretty good not to go to the door until it's time for him to go outside. I usually pick him up if someone knocks on the door when I'm not expecting them to and he backs up when I tell him "back".

Oh, and if you enlarge the pic of the collar, it's the second one in the window that pops up.

maybe try one of those rolled leather collars...no rough edges for the fur to rub on.

We do not wear collars all the time, either. Only for walks or when we're visiting strange places. Abbey's and Wally's collars are "properly fit" since they have been known to slip them, and we don't do harnesses. Their collars are just too tight for all the time wear. Plus the tags are really annoying shaking around at 3 in the morning.

That being said, Harley's collar is cool, and Harley is a TOTAL FOX!!!! So I can see why you like to have it on him ALL THE TIME. Perpetual puppy beef cake!! Hubba hubba. :-D

But maybe let him run around necked in the house. Sounds like his sensitive skin is just not digging a full time collar.

Lol! Well, Harley hasn't had his collar on since I posted this, but I found a rash on his neck. It was really red and irritated. I thought he was bleeding. I think I know why he's got a rash and a bald spot. He scratches his neck so darn much that now he has a rash and it rubs on his neck. Sooo, I'm going to take him to the vet tomorrow to see what we can do for him. Thanks for all the replies! And lol @ hubba hubba.

I know Ivy hated her collar at first and still sometimes tries to scratch it off  but I found just a light weight 1/4 inch buckle collar she likes much better.

Sorry that Harley is having a problem with that.. I hope its not mange or ringworm

I used to have collars on my dogs all the time but I had an incident where Boggie and Eddie (a beagle we no longer have) where rough-housing and Boogie's collar got snagged in Eddies lower jaw and boogie flipped over and started biting Eddie because he was choking.  By the time I caught Eddie who proceeded to drag Boog all over the yard in a paniced yelping hysteria.. Boogie was all but dead.  I had to literally puff air in his nose and pump his chest for several seconds before he gasped and then started panting.

He is fine now but to this day if my dogs are out in the yard ... no collars.  The only one wearing a collar all of the time is my big Lab/Rott. .... We use the Easy Walk harness when we walk the dogs and they do have collars that they wear on bath day so I can hook them up in the tub.

Sorry I kinda got off on that.. it is still very real to me.

The round leather collar sounds like a good idea unless he is just sensitive to the material.

Please keep us posted on what the vet says... hope its all okay.

WOW! I am so sorry that happened. If and when we get another dog, no collars when they play. And I really hope its not mange or ringworm either, hadn't thought about that. Man, that would be so scary. Poor baby.  I looked at your site GrafixGirl, and I love Kodi and Bunny's coloring, very beautiful.

Well, as for my pup, she only has a harness and she wears it mostly just when we go outside (and for a little while inside to help her get used to it).

I wanted to share a similar story to the one above, though. I've always had it ingrained in me that you never leave a collar on a dog when it's in its crate. My parents were dogsitting once for a friend's puppy, and one day when they came in to check on him, he had managed to get his collar caught on the inside of the crate-- he had choked himself to death. I guess he got so frantic trying to get out of the crate or something. Anyway, my parents felt TERRIBLE, but it was definitely a lesson learned for everyone. I suppose that with a harness on Lucie there's not much she could do to herself anyway, but still... I never leave it on her when she's in the crate.

Also, Lucie does have a small rash on her neck that seems to be getting worse, but it's nowhere near her harness, so I don't know where it came from. It's about the size of a quarter or a little larger. Any suggestions to help soothe it? I've heard that Cortisone 10 can help with rashes.

Good luck with Harley- I hope he's okay!

i had this prob with bryson... braeli not soo much... we used the very soft nylon collars... we now dont leave them on anymmore for a few reasons...
1. bald spot on the neck above his chest... not growing back in =(
2. they take them off each other and chew them apart.... =/
3. bryosn, no matter how tight/loose the collar is... like a contortionist will get his jaw trapped/stuck inside the collar while he tries to bite it!!!!

so we only put them on when we go to the vet or stores...
