When I got Sophie, her eyes were running, but she'd just had a tooth cleaning and had been drugged.  They went away and she had clear eyes for two weeks.

Then, almost instantly when we took her to the vet for her wellness exam two weeks later, her eyes began watering. And, if you all remember, the vet was at the recieving area of the shelter we'd rescued her at and we thought it was a sign of stress.  She was freaking out. When they didn't go away for the first few days I thought nothing of it because I though it must be stress...

But now it's been a week and a half and her eyes are still doing it.  She had a bath, but it didn't get rid of the rusty-colored smears under her eyes.  It's sad because it's completely changing her face so she rarely looks happy (since they're kind of tear streak looking). I've been trying to figure this out.  If it wasn't for the fact she didn't have it those first two weeks, I'd just assume it's because she's a little white dog and they get those sometimes (lots of chihuahuas and poodles, etc, have them).

But then I thought, ratties are prone to allergies...

Is this an allergy symptom?

check out www.angelseyesonline.com it is a supplement you put in the food that takes care of eye stains  it is the only thing I have found that works.  We just started selling it at work and it has made massive improvements in the dogs that are taking it.

I will... if that's what it is... but the first two weeks she didn't have them at all!! If she was prone to "eye stains" wouldn't she have had them before?

with some dogs it comes and goes, with what I am not sure some of my client will only give bottled water because of the treatment tap water gets.  Well water seems to be really hard on them.

Yeah... I'm not sure... I went to the angel eyes website and read the "about tear stains part" and got to the part about food allergies and announced to my family that she was allergic to the food. I've been trying to convince them to switch foods, so maybe that would help...

Only when I came back to the computer did I read the part about water. We have a well, which means that we have VERY hard, mineral packed water. Hmm. It might be that. Which means I'd have to used a brita or pur filter I guess... only we don't have one (because our well water is yummy-- spring water from the tap! It comes from an underground river, not a stagnant aquifer like most wells tap into. And it's like 120 feet below the surface, so it's too deep to be easily affected by pollutants...) However, it is really really hard water. Hmm.

Still, I think changing foods would be good for little Sophie and Radar too...

change in foods may help a lot some of the foods have dyes in them and I don't think that helps with the staining

Naw, our food doesn't have dye. (I'm the one who started the on going affordable food post and I've been researching like crazy...) But apparently it could be a wheat or other cereal grain allergy (wheat being the most common)
