I was wondering do you feed your dogs once or twice a day. The twins are about a year old and look like they are well fed. Franny eats less then her twin Patty who is a little hog

How much do you feed your dogs at a time? I give them half a pouch each of wet food and then two half handfuls of dry and then at night another half a handful of dry mixed with a small amount of meat and veggie or rice if we are having it.

I want to make sure they do not get over weight while they are young. Also, once a day (maybe twice) I will give them a dry dog treat while I am training them.

Daisy and her big sister, Anna, both get fed twice a day (morning and early evening) Daisy weighs about 16 lbs. and gets 1 cup of dry food, split into 2 halves. Right now she is on a 50/50 mix of Nutro Lamb and Rice and Natural Balance Ultra Premium because we are doing a switch to the NB brand.

She gets a couple of small liver treats when she goes into her crate in the morning. And at night right before bed she likes to eat about 5-10 little pieces of her kibble before falling asleep, so I'll put just that many in her food bowl so she can have her little before-bed snack

We're trying to lose weight so 22 lb. Yogi gets 1/2 cup in the morning of dry Innova soaked in hot water with about 1/8 cup of boiled sweet potatoes and some other steamed veggie and same for the evening. He gets one biscuit from the local bakery a day and 5 tiny treats of Zuke's when we go walking (about equal to one normal sized treat). He also gets a little of what I'm eating if it's healthy like chicken breast or deli meat which I really need to stop but he looks at me with his huge brown eyes and I give in!

Jack is ~11-12lbs now. He gets about 3/4-1 cup of Canidae dry a day. Doesn't always eat it all though. Then usually a treat once or twice a day also.

Lucy free feeds. I fill her bowl up almost every three days. She's not a big eater unless she is getting special dinner. My mom told me that for this week she made the dogs some sort of meal with beef and rice. She has a real food for dogs cookbook that she cooks out of for her dog on occasion.

Although serving dry food in water is a great idea, the water should be around room temperature as some nutrients in the food are heat sensitive.  Is Yogi losing weight on Innova?  I'm having good results with reduced fat Innova EVO.  I feel guilty about feeding a 22 pound dog a half cup of food a day but feel better that it's very high in protein. He's only been on Innova for a month and I honestly can't tell if he's losing weight as we haven't been to that vet since we've switched. His harness is feeling a tiny bit looser though but not sure if that's just wishful thinking on my part. I thought about EVO but would like to get his kidneys tested to make sure they are healthy before doing so as I've heard it won't cause kidney problems but could exacerbate existing ones...

I bought a bag of California Natural to try also when the Innova runs out.

Thanks for the info about the water, I will do room temp for now, I guess I shouldn't microwave it for 12 seconds, either, huh? He just seems to like his food warm or maybe I am projecting my own food preferences on him!

I am seeing that a lot of ou are feeding your dogs 1 cup a day for a 15+ lb dog. Jack is still only 6 months but gets about that a day. Is it too much? He practically skipped breakfast today and was trying to get into my pantry tonight to tell me to get him food!!! He has NEVER done that before, LOL.

My bag of EVO recommends 1 1/2 to 2 1/4 cups for a 10-20 pound dog 5-7 months old. They recommend 1 to 1 1/2 cups for a 10-20 pound dog 12 months and up. I think you have to feed what's right for your dog. I start at the low end of the recommended amounts on the bag and see how that affects my dogs. I kept cutting back until I noticed a weight loss. Of course he gets green beans for filler and small amounts of canned mixed with all his supplements. He also gets raw beef bones about once or twice a week so I feed less on those days. I don't even count the various vegetables he snacks on during the day. I keep one eye on their weight and one on their "output" to gauge the amount o feed.

Thanks again Ski!!  Jack does get some treats, an occasional peice of banana, eggs etc.  Plus whatever he steals from the kids!

Katie and my Lab both get fed twice a day. Katie is 1.5 years old and weighs in at about 18 lbs. She is lean - vet says her weight is excellant. She gets about 1/2 cup twice a day. I agree with Ski, you have to figure out what is best for your dog. The guidelines on quality dog food are fairly good indicators, however. I don't really remember the breaks, but growing puppies usually need a bit more and then they have you taper off as they age. I would go by the guidelines and adjust by how your pup's weight looks. My vet says you should feel, but not necessarily see, ribs. Now, I can see a bit of rib on Katie, however both my vets think her weight is good. I think these dogs tend to show a little rib -- partly do to their build. Now my Lab is on reduced calorie and eats the minimum amout and I don't know when I've seen rib on her. hahahahaha.
