I guess I need some advice.... I took Jager to Banfield in Petsmart to save money on her Corona, Distemper and Rabies Vaccines.  I am a little concerned.  They just didn't seem to know what they were doing.  I told them about her constant scratching after she jumped into a pool and they told me that I need to change her diet.  She is currently on Candidae and has been for the past year.  So I told them that it was not her diet and they looked at me like " oh now your a vet?"  So they gave her the vaccines and told me that she should be a little tired and lethargic.  Okay that was on Tuesday.  So now it is Thursday.  Jager is still having trouble getting up and down the steps and she is still lethargic.  She was shaking yesterday where they admininstered the vaccine and she is limping a little bit.  I had to hand feed her today and I am just so upset.  After leaving Banfield I looked on consumer affairs and just read some absolute horror stories about there clinics.  I guess I should have read about them before but I figured Petsmart would'nt put a bad vet in their stores.

Has anyone's dog had these symptoms from these vaccines?  Should I be worried? Should I take her to my normal vet?

I guess the moral of this story is do your homework before you decide to cheap out on your dog's health!  I am absolutely guilt ridden and I just don't want her to be in pain anymore.

I am sorry if this is a repost but my search is not working properly and I need an answer or some help quick!

Thanks in advance for any info!

I also deal with banfield,If you have a problem with them call their corporate office,i have no problems, however i am always worried about side effects of shots,if you dont feel they will give you proper care, please take him to your reg vet,I have also read these stories, but I know these vets I deal with quite well, however their were other vets their at one time I would never!!! let around my dog,I know the vets I deal with will be their for my contract, thats the only reason i signed up,for shots heartworm test, skin issues, minor things Im crazy about they are fine, anything that would be major I will go to my reg vet, their are many side effects of vaccines, please go to your reg vet if worried

I'm sorry you're going through this.
I have never dealt with Banfield, though, so I have no advice.
I hope Jager is better soon.

I don't blame you for being concerned. Two days seems like a while to wait for the effects of the shots to wear off. But, I don't really know too much about it.

Rowdy goes to a Banfield, but I'm choosy about which vet we go to. There is an older man vet there who is not so good, but they have a female who has been great. She has helped up so much with Schatzi's disease and exploring options for that. I think they are pretty much like any vet- it's all about the particular vet that you are seeing, not so much the clinic itself. I've never had a problem with them.

Hope Jager recovers soon.

My greyhound had a strong reaction to the rabies vaccine once. She had a great deal of trouble getting up after laying down for a day. She was VERY sore. My horse seemed to have strong reactions to rabies as well in the form of swelling and soreness at the injection site, as did a lot of other horses I knew. I ended up giving my horse bute (horse aspirin) prior to receiving the vaccine and for 24 hours after. That seemed to do the trick. After these experiences I personally think that particular vaccine seems to be more likely to produce stronger reactions.

I don't use Banfield but last time Skipper got his rabies he was quite sore for a day or 2. And Morgandy developed a knot at her injection site that was there for several weeks before it finally went away. My vet recommended aspirin for Skipper's soreness.

Personally, I have a vet that I really like and trust and I take my dogs there....he's the cheapest in this area anyway other than the shot clinics they do at Petco.

I just found this thread this morning.  How is Jager this morning?  If there is not a major improvement, I would take her to your normal vet.  I have had a problem with the administration of all the vaccines at one time.  So, now we give rabies, wait at least two weeks, then give the distemper vaccine.  I feel it overloads their systems when you give all the vaccines at the same time.  I hope Jager is ok now.

I hope Jager is feeling better this morning. I use Banfield for both of my dogs, and love my vet there. Savanna had a reaction once to her shots, and I took her back, and they gave her a 'benydryl' type shot, don't remember what it was. It helped almost immediatly. I now have her shots spacd out so she never gets more than one vaccine at a time. Good luck.
