I am getting more and more worried! I got Darby two weeks ago. The shelter worker told me that they "thought" that she was going into heat. I have never had a female dog before and know next to nothing about them. Here are her symptoms: Her vagina and nipples were swollen when I got her. They appear to be slightly more swollen now. She has not bled yet at all, but I've heard that some dogs don't. She is not humping things. She looks like she has gained weight, but I could be imagining it. Jerry is very interested in sniffing her, but she doesn't show any sexual interest in him. (He's neutered, thank goodness.) Can anyone tell me if these are symptoms of heat or pregnancy? I got her on Wednesday, May 9th and this is when they told me that they "thought" she was going into heat. They didn't give me any indication of how long she had been showing symptoms of heat or even how long she had been at the shelter. |

| I've never had a female dog who went into heat or got pregnant, so I don't know the symptoms. When can the vet do an x-ray to look for puppies? Will you let her have them if she is pregnant or will you get her spayed and abort the puppies? |

You might want to take her in to the vet because if she is pregnant it might be from a larger dog and the puppies could be too big for her to give birth to. The vet would have to do a c-section which is hard on the female and very expensive. I've never had a pregnant dog and those symptoms could just be heat-related....mine never gained weight though. And they all bled. |

| I'm not sure about the weight gain. I looked at the pictures I took when I first got her and she looks the same size. I'm just getting really paranoid about this, I think. |

A heat cycle usually last 3 weeks...if she was going into heat on May 9th that's two weeks right there. Weight gain could, of course, simply be from the better food she's getting now. Keep us updated! |

How old is Darby? If she is really young yet too they don't recommend them having puppies either? Keep us up to date on Darby and let us know what you decide to do? |

| I called the vet and they told me to call the shelter where I got her to find out how long she was there. Once they know that, they can better determine if she is in heat or not. Based on that, they'll decide whether or not to perform x-rays. |

Okay, I called the shelter. I do not have a good feeling about this. She was brought in as a stray on April 27th. The girl that I talked to told me that "if" she's pregnant, her supervisor said I can bring in the puppies and they'll get rid of them. (Whatever that means. ) It sounds to me like now they're trying to cover their a**es. I asked her if she was showing any symptoms before I adopted her. She told me that she just noticed she was swollen that day, but hadn't really paid much attention. I'm guessing we'll be taking x-rays soon. |

| I don't like that they said they would get "rid" of them either. Sounds like they mean euthanasia to me. But do let us know how things turn out. |

Yeah, I didn't like the sound of that at all. The girl at the shelter that I always end up talking to you is really young and obviously not the one making any decisions around there. I didn't want to rip into her about what her supervisor said, but I was pretty bothered by it. If Darby does have puppies, they will have the best possible start to life that I can offer. They will only go to good homes. I'll be checking references. |

This is terrible! If she is pregnant, I think you need to spay her anyway, asap. With out knowing what she mated with, it can be very difficult/dangerous for her. I know no one wants to 'lose' puppies, but you have to think about Darby. Poor baby girl. |

My dobie seems to take FOREVER to start bleeding. She gets swollen (her nipples are always big, so can't judge my that), and it's several weeks (I swear closer to a month) before bleeding starts. Maybe she's having a false pregnancy...the stress of the shelter and then new home. I can't believe they wouldn't check her out before they gave her to you. Here, when you adopt a dog, it has to be spayed/neutered before you take it home. They don't leave it up to the new owner. Good luck with the vet visit, and please keep us posted. I hope this turns out well. |

| If she is pregnant she is probably close to delivering and that may make problems for spaying her. a false pregnancy would do the same and it really doesn't sound like she is in heat. Swollen nipples usually mean pregnant, unless it is first heat and they fill out a little then, but nothing real noticable unless you've been watching for it. |
