So....Tink has lost a couple of teeth in the last two days. She is about 5 1/2 months old. I didn't think that puppies lost their teeth. I wondering if I should be worried. She has some dental chews from the vet she loves to chew on, an old slipper, and a couple of hard rubber toys. She also chews on pencils if the kids leave them where she can find them, and an occasional golf tee. We watcher her pretty closely. Should I be worried? And, what about the doggie fairy? I go broke with the tooth one - don't know if I can afford another one . |

Puppies absolutely lose teeth. They're commonly referred to as "milk teeth." Now if she's already gone through a round of losing the milk teeth and her adult teeth are falling out, I think I'd rush to the vet. But if the teeth she's losing are REALLY small, pointy, and sharp, she's more than likely fine. HTH! |

| P.S. For safety's sake, I'd definitely keep her away from the pencils...she's eating lead. |

| She is most certainly NOT eating lead as pencils have not been made with lead for a very long time, they are made with pressed carbon. Although that is not good for her either!!!! |

They are small and pointy - guess I can relax. Still wondering about the puppy fairy....
And, I try really hard to keep the pencils out of reach - she is small but she can really jump and climb . Thnx |

Actually, you're wrong, too. I just looked it up and it seems as if "pencils" as we know them have NEVER been made of lead. Chemistry was in its earliest days and they only thought the giant graphite deposit they found was lead. There were ancient Roman styluses (?) used to scratch things into papyrus, and those were often made of lead...but from there, lead wasn't a ever pencil ingredient at all.
Sorry if I scared you, Tink's Mom! The only reason I said anything was because in the 11th grade, my boyfriend's dog ate a pencil and subsequently died a few days later. The vet said it must have been lead poisoning. Apparently, there's a slew of dumb@$$ vets in the region, as that's not the 1st time I've been told something completely incorrect by one of them. Go figure. |

| Thanks for all of info. I am actually more worried about her chewing on the top of the pencils and getting that into her system - which could have been what hurt your boyfriends dog. I worry about my fur baby as much as my 4 kids at home! Whew, parenting is not for sissys! |

Aw, saving doggy teeth isn't silly at all! I always saved the ones I could find (but they ate it in the fire). I had one of Dutch's sort of giant teeth on the sides of his gums that fell out. Wish I still had it. Oh well. I still have his collar and several pics taken of him after the fire. And thousands of great memories!! But I can say that the doggy tooth fairy never came to our house, not even to deliver teething toys. The only thing our yellow lab ever teethed on was a hammer Jason left outside I went outside and saw something silver lying on the ground, sort of hidden in the grass. I bent over to pick it up and it was just a hammer head. We got lucky that she didn't get sick, or splinters, or something. I couldn't find one trace of the handle anywhere. All these puppies on everyone's avatars are giving me puppy fever. I will resist. I will. I will. I will! |

I'm sure Pixel will be loosing them soon - Tink is close to 6 months now.
As for the toys, my daughter already thinks I spend more on Tink than her ....but maybe a new fetch toy is in order. She loves to play toss and turbo! |

| Since she's teething a new chew toy might be nice. (Bully sitcks, pig ears, dental chews for puppies- anything with a bit of firmness to sink her teeth into are good) Puppies chew to loosen and get rid of the baby teeth, and to help releive the pain. More importantly than a new toy though is keeping things like pencils and golf tees out of Tink's reach. She may be able to climb and jump, but these things can be real dangerous to Tink. I'd be more worried about her eating those things than lossing teeth. Good luck. |

| Cameo was still losing teeth at that age, she's 8 months old now and I just saw another new one growing in. Those little puppy teeth are hard to find once they fall out. We were lucky enough to get one of Cameo's baby canines when it popped out, we heard it land on the floor. That's the only one we got though. |

| Oh, and the first time I saw blood on a socky-ball I was mortified, but then Janie explained that it was probably a puppy tooth. Afterwards I kept a closer eye on her and checked her teeth daily just to see if any were getting loose. That's how I knew that one canine was ready to come out. |

My rescue dog, Zipper, was just beginning to cut her first adult tooth when she had her initial vet visit. The vet pointed it out and said "She must be right around 5-5½ months old because that's when they usually get their first adult teeth." So that's how the vet decided what her estimated date of birth was for her file on Zipper. Sounds like your pup is right on schedule with her new set of teeth. This will go on for quite a few weeks, if I recall correctly with most of my dogs. The actually ingest most of them, but you will occasionally find them stuck in soft toys or on your floor. Perfectly normal. |
