My 7 month year old Rat Terrier has problems eating puppy pads when I go to work. I leave in the morning at around 8:30am. By the time my boyfriend comes home from work in the early afternoon she tore the whole puppy pad in shreds! We gate off the kitchen when we leave and put a puppy pad on the floor. I don't know what to do. I called poison control once and they said make sure its not the blue plastic part and she "might" pass it. As a new mommy I obviously think the worst and can't stop thinking about it. She also takes tissues/Q-Tips and such and rips them up right before I wake up, if she isn't still sleeping in bed with me. What should I do? |

there was just a thread about ripping up potty pads a few days ago in "training." here it is:

my girls are 1.5 yrs old and still grab tissues (preferably used ) whenever they can...I try to keep the bathroom door shut, and tissue boxes up where they can't get them. they still manage to get them from who knows where every once in awhile. |

| How long is she left alone? You may want to crate train her instead of using the puppy pads...at 7 months she can "hold it" for several hours. I did the puppy pads with my Mayfly but I guess I got lucky with her, she didn't tear them up. My new foster pup does like to tear them up and it's a mess when he does. |

Kennel, kennel, kennel. If we didn't kennel Pixie while we were gone, we'd come home to some metal scraps...unless she figured out how to eat that stuff, too. Accidents happen, but I'd feel awful if my dog ate something I KNEW I could have prevented her from eating and she got really sick, or heaven forbid, died. For me, being a responsible Mom (to fur and skin kids alike) means keeping them out of harms way, and by George, if that means Pixie has to be in a kennel every now and then, then it just does. She did eat her kennel once...but there was no way I could have anticipated that, LOL. We ended up getting a metal one that she hasn't figured out how to eat. Yet. |

no worries... i doubt they are eating the the pads... just shredding them by digging... my 2 do it all teh time... what a mess!!!! as for the tissues, qtips, etc... you need to be more aware of these things and leave them in an unreachable place. we close our bathroom off as well... and teh few times we dont bryosn likes to do 2 things: 1. roll out the toilet paper and shred it (an entire full roll once when he was unattended) 2. jump into the bathtub and get stuck as he couldnt get himself out (he just couldnt do it) its up to us to watch them and "baby proof" for them. |

We leave her alone for maybe 4 hours or so. We have her crate in the kitchen with her bed in it. We had a big problem with the crate when we first brought her home at 2 months. We tried it for like 3 more months and it just wasn't working!! She would cry so loud and I just couldn't bare leaving her I felt so bad. We live in the first floor of a house and have tenants upstairs so I don't want her crying and howling when I'm gone. She doesn't cry or whine when I leave her in the kitchen and she has room to run and a warm bed to sleep in. The kitchen is always clean so there really isn't anything she could chew on besides her arsenal of toys!! I just hate when she chews her pads it scares me!! |

| Have you thought about leaving her in the kitchen without a pad? If you're worried about her safety, this seems the simplest solution. It doesn't sound like she's using the pads when you're gone. Problem solved!? |

| I just wanted to say I bought a reuseable potty pad and some reusable baby changing pads(way cheaper $7 for 2) and pixel has not ripped them up or anything. Granted she is now in a crate/large cage but she still has plenty of room to do it. A little over 4 months now and she is able to hold her poo all day while we are at work and only pees once ithink during the day now. She really doesnt like to potty in there its not like the pen at all even though she has a lot of room. She mostly sleeps anyway even when im home during the day. |
