Stumbled across this interesting site that has maps showing the number of incidences of tick related canine diseases across the US.

How interesting.  Illinois, where I live is high with heartworm, as a lot of states.  Funny, the most northeastern states are very low with heartworm.  We always had our last dog on heartworm prevention meds and now Oreo.

As the site said the numbers are probably a lot higher than indicated because it depends on dogs being tested positive for any of the diseases and reported.

I can assure you that some of the states with lower numbers (W.Va. for instance) has A LOT more positive results than indicated. The problem is in some areas of a state or the country in general, dogs aren't on preventative, aren't tested, and if found to have some diseases, aren't treated. It's just the way it is in a lot of areas.

I would guess NY's number are higher because there's more testing and reporting in the first place.

NY is way high but it is specific counties that bring it high, like down your way b-b! The county I am in has 5 heartworm and 86 lyme cases. Orange, Westchester and Dutchess are way higher.
As far as ticks and lyme goes, I treat but you can also prevent a lot by checking DAILY. It usually takes about 48-76 hours of having a tick attached for them to transmit disease.

yea... down my way... border westchester putnam... its high risk... my wife has been bitten 2x by a tick and BOTH times got lyme disease!!!
i have had ticks on me and never got bitten... i guess my blood isnt soo sweet.

B&B have both had tick bites (what looked like them anyways - bite and red rings) but they were protected with lyme vaccs and frontline. never actually saw the ticks as frontline is supposed to kill'em off... no effect on them at all... marks went away after a few days... now our yard has been sprayed too... so... we will see i guess.

we are switching now from frontline to a new med (dont remember the name)... supposedly ticks are growing immune to frontlines meds... the new stuff is supposed to "infect the tick" so that it cant get on us or another dog and survive.

WAHOOO We're number 1! Oh wait in this game you don't want the higher numbers..sigh.

I keep my crew on Sentinal which does EVERYTHING. It's their monthly heartworm but also does fleas and ticks. I recommend it highly, it's one product, once a month. Costs a bit more than Heartguard but you don't have to also buy Frontline or something like that.

My SIL and brother live in CT right on the border of NY. They are covered in them all the time. SIL grew up in Mt.Kisco so she is way used to them but I told them I am not coming down in warm weather cause they really gross me out!! LOL They found like 7 of them one night on them, the dog, their couch.....oh yeah she went nutty cleaning. They built in an area full of trees and rocks and they are just everywhere.

oh wow...  once we treated the lawn and put up our fence which keeps out the ground hogs, bunnies, turkey and deer... i havent seen a tick or a bite... we dont have trees in our yard, but our neighbors doo bordering our fence, so we dont get the squirells either... we really have to just worry about the birds transporting them... "knocking on wood"!!!!

Very interesting. Not a lot of activity in Oregon, and most of it is in the Willamette valley. But, knowing how people are out in eastern OR, I would have to guess there are probably a bit more positives and just no vet record. I'm sure they have low numbers there, anyway, based on the climate. My parents are out there and they don't treat for ticks. There aren't really any out there. Too cold and dry. But, don't worry. They've got snakes to make up for it.

shots or tick protection?

the lyme shots seem to hurt'em alil... they are usually sore for a day... may throw up as a reaction (my vet gives us a pill just in case they need)...

the other protection (fronotline or k9 advantix) doesnt hurt at all... swuirt the bottle on the skin and rub it in on the hsoulder blades... easy 2 sec thing...
