Im currently switching Jack from NB duck and potato allergy to Wellness 5mix or something like that.  Anyway, he's had diarreah a couple times.  I was wondering if it could be the food.  I'm mixing it with his other food.  He's not eating very much either.  We just got back from vacation and he at only 1 bowl of food the whole time. (sunday to wednesday) I mixed scrambled eggs with it and he ate it all, but has hardly ate since.  He wants what we are eating, but I dont want to start that habit.  So Im wondering if the food is giving him diarreah and that he may not like it.  Im switching him because he doesnt have skin allergies.  So I thought I'd try a different brand.  Any thoughts?

how long have you been switching him and how much of the new stuff are you mixing into the old kibble? he may need to be eased into it very slowly, over a few weeks. his not wanting to eat may be a part of his grieving process too, you never know.
keep in mind that (grain) allergies aren't always visible. my dobie mix, Buddy, had grain allergies that didn't show up as skin problems, his showed up as diarrhea, once I put him on EVO, that problem went away.

Well, Im mixing it about half and half. I thought about the grieving also and then thought that it could be that we were in a different place too and not at home. Maybe too many things different for him all at the same time could be messing him up too. Maybe I will feed mostly NB and mix in a little of the wellness. I dont know....I guess if NB gives him all the nutrients he needs then maybe I should just keep him on it. Im such a decisive person arent I?? LOL

Hi Teresa,

Nice to meet you. I'm new here.

I recently did a family wide switch over to premium foods (based on what I learned from this site!!!). Abbey and Wally (the RATTIES!!!) finally settled on Orijen Senior, and the switch went ok - only one bag of Innova to give to a friend, since my two did NOT like it at all.

My cat Sammy has not done so well. Evo (dry) made him have diarrhea big time. I switched him to various brands of premium canned and thought he got constipated, so there was an rush trip to the vet for that. We then tried Orijen, and we are back to diarrhea and also now barfing. This was just an hour or so ago. He is acting alert but is clearly not pleased his body is out of whack. (And I am not please I did not listen to him when his body started getting out of whack) So, there will be a trip to the vet tomorrow. I have no idea what I will end up feeding him, but in the short term it will probably be his same old pre-premium food.

I think if Jack is not digging his new food and his body isn't either, then it is time to reevaluate. Put him back on the old food or redo the switch over to the new food at a reeeeeeeeeeeeaaallly sloooooow pace.

That is just my thoughts on the situation.

Good luck!

half and half may be too much to start with...whenever I've switched kibbles, I've eased them into it by adding about 1/4 new to 3/4 old, and let them get used to it for a few days before increasing the amount of new kibble, let them get used to the new amount for a few days, etc, until you are completely on the new kibble.
poor Jack...he's been through so much this past week, maybe put off switching foods for a few weeks to give him time to grieve and get used to being an only dog.
