Hello!  My stepdaughter told me that she read in a magazine that Ratties should only be bathed about once every 3-4 months, and then her step dad told me that he thought it was only about once a year.  Please help!  I know nothing about Ratties and I don't want to over bathe him, but on the other hand I don't want him going around dirty either.

Thanks,

Elisa

since ratties have such fine coats, they shouldn't be given baths too often...it can make their skin dry out. thicker coated dogs need baths more often because the oils in their skin gets trapped in their coats, but that doesn't happen with ratties. I give my ratties baths when they start to feel grimy or if they get into something (sprayed by a skunk, or roll in something nasty)...for my girls, they've been getting a bath once a month in this warmer weather because the are outside so much, but in the cooler weather, once every few months is fine. there was a thread around here recently about how none of our ratties ever seem to smell "doggie" like so many other breeds do. they do need a bath more than once a year, though.

Rowdy gets baths on about the same schedule as Lisabeth set. When he gets stinky, it's time for a bath. When he's outside a lot, it's about every month. Otherwise he can go a couple months.

Yep same with mine! Except one weekend he got several baths in a couple days because he kept rolling in something oh so nasty. But it was sure hard on his skin.

Its true that over bathing can cause dry skin, but doesn't necessarily mean it WILL cause dry skin. It's also true that you can let them go several months. Not every short haired dog or rattie is alike. Know what I mean? I bathe mine every 2 weeks - even in colder weather (I like a clean dog-and they get muddy in the winter) and so far we haven't had any problems with that. I think it's up to you, and your dog/s how often you bathe them. Just be sure to use a good dog shampoo, not people shampoo as these can contain ingredients that can be harmful or cause allergies.
