Also, malta blue, I don't just have a rat terrier. Sophia is 16 1/2 pounds and therefore doesn't eat that much. However, we also have a 60 pound dog-- so feeding him is like feeding more than three Sophia's. So that's like having four rat terriers. So people who just have one or two rat terriers on this site are probably spending less feeding their dogs premium than I do feeding Purina One. We do have a feed store nearby, where we get the hay to feed the goats. I will check it out next time we need to buy hay (within the next week). Still, like I said, I'm going to switch until at least after they've eaten the bags they already have, and we have a few more weeks on them. But, like someone said, I looked at the Candidae new formula and it's not really that much better than Purina One. And I've looked at a lot of grocery brands and Purina One is actually one of the best of them (way better than Beneful or Pedigree or some of the others). Ultimately, since Sophia and Radar eat the same food and Radar is my parents dog, it's my parent's decision. Right now I don't have enough money to live on my own, so yeah, I don't want to go broke on dog food. However, I will get my own place in a few years if not sooner, and then I can switch Sophia even if I can't now. My parents switched to Purina One because it IS better than Kibbles N Bits, which is what we were feeding him (and BBsmom, that's an answer to you ) so they might be willing to switch to another food for the same reason. They love Radar and only want the best they can afford for him too. They come back from vacation tomorrow. |

Actually, I looked at that rating site that was newly mention, the one with grades, and calculated Purina One, since it wasn't on the list. It's a high F. Sigh. 62-64 (62 if your dogs have allergies-- ours don't) (that's the Chicken and Rice) However, the Candidae new formula is a 93 (All Life Stages). That's a lot better than Purina One but a lot worse than it used to be. I wrote down the guide lines, which I'll copy below, and I'll take it to the feed store next time we go and go calculate foods. Start with a grade of 100 points, then … For every listing of "by-product", subtract 10 points For every non-specific animal source ("meat" or "poultry", meat, meal or fat) reference, subtract 10 points If the food contains BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin, subtract 10 points For every grain "mill run" or non-specific grain source subtract 5 points. If the same grain ingredient is used 2 or more times in the first five ingredients (i.e. "ground brown rice", "brewer's rice", "rice flour" are all the same grain), subtract 5 points If the protein sources are not meat meal and there are less than 2 meats in the top 3 ingredients, subtract 3 points If it contains any artificial colorants, subtract 3 points If it contains ground corn or whole grain corn, subtract 3 points If corn is listed in the top 5 ingredients, subtract 2 more points If the food contains any animal fat other than fish oil, subtract 2 points If lamb is the only animal protein source (unless your dog is allergic to other protein sources), subtract 2 points If it contains soy or soybeans, subtract 2 points If it contains wheat (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to wheat), subtract 2 points If it contains beef (unless you know that your dog isn't allergic to beef), subtract 1 point If it contains salt, subtract 1 point Extra Credit: If any of the meat sources are organic, add 5 points If the food is endorsed by any major breed group or nutritionist, add 5 points If the food is baked not extruded, add 5 points If the food contains probiotics, add 3 points If the food contains fruit, add 3 points If the food contains vegetables (NOT corn or other grains), add 3 points If the animal sources are hormone-free and antibiotic-free, add 2 points If the food contains barley, add 2 points If the food contains flax seed oil (not just the seeds), add 2 points If the food contains oats or oatmeal, add 1 point If the food contains sunflower oil, add 1 point For every different specific animal protein source (other than the first one; count "chicken" and "chicken meal" as only one protein source, but "chicken" and "fish" as 2 different sources), add 1 point If it contains glucosamine and chondroitin, add 1 point If the vegetables have been tested for pesticides and are pesticide-free, add 1 point Scoring 94-100+ = A 86-93 = B 78-85 = C 70-77 = D 69 = F |

Malta Blue - I understand what you are saying but I"ve seen quite a few mothers who WOULD feed their kids McDonalds their whole lives to keep them happy so I wanted to throw that out there. With dog food much of the time it's just ignorance in knowing what the food contains....I wouldn't have fed Purina or Ol Roy (GASP) in years past if I had known what was in them and that there were better foods out there. (Long before I got rat terriers.)
Smilinpilgrim - I DO feed 6 dogs (4 ratties, 1 whippet and a chi-corgi) and we make it work with good food. Feeding crappy food can actually health problems in their later years than cost more than buying good food now.
It's certainly everyone's business to feed whatevery they choose to. I just chime in on these threads to educate and point people towards researching on their own to make informed choices. That's how I learned about dog food! So...I try to spread the word. Some will listen and go learn more on their own and others will keep feeding the loe quality stuff. BTW some of the good foods just don't cost much more than the crappy ones....especially when they eat less because they're getting more nutrition instead of just fillers in it. |

if anyone is interested in learning about the commercial pet food industry and what goes into our animal's foods and how it's made.... you might want to read PET FOOD NATION. Its an eye opener!! Also wanted to say that I agree with MB - we as pet owners should educate ourselves. Sue I also agree and relate with what you had to say..... it isn't about being fancy, but about providing quality. I happen to be a single mom, with a very single income, and I feed my 2 dogs high quality food (along with food I prepare at home) because it's important to me to feed them as best I can. I'm not going broke doing it either. In fact, I started out feeding crap, and haven't really noticed the change in my pocketbook since switching. I also figure if I'm spending a bit more now, I'm saving money in the long run in vet bills. (just something to think about) |

I sooo agree...educate ourselves!
I certainly have....since my Labs and their skin and health issues...(mega $$$ asnd zero improvement)
With Yogi, I buy only top quality as well as make stuff for him...and so far, vet bills are zero.
Doesn't mean anything...BUT my Labs were on all kinds of drugs for skin issues...$$$$$$...monthly. Useless.(and fed junk food..Pedigree, etc)
SO FAr Mr Yogi has cost a big fat ZERO...and when I got him he had Demodectec Mange!
I read a high protein diet takes care of that mange...so far, good....not returned yet...

We have been feeding our puppy Innova since we got her, and she loves it. Of course, I've never known her on anything else so I have nothing to compare it to, but we did our research beforehand and decided that seemed like one of the best brands. We buy it at a groomer's just down the road... the ONLY place that carries it around here. So far it seems like they stay well stocked and the food is fresh (compared to some Solid Gold we looked at at PetCo where the expiration date was in about a month). Plus, in the first 3 months we had her she only went through one 16-lb bag, so I don't feel badly for spending $26 on it! |

Hund n Flocken is a good food. Canidae has always been good, too, not sure about the changes in their formula but just read the label and check out the ingredients. Canidae is one of the least expensive brands of high quality food. And for anyone who is close to a Petco they have a program where you can get a bag of whatever brand you feed after buying 9 bags of it. Comes in handy especially if you're feeding a lot of dogs! Petco also has Wellness now. |

Hi everyone. I do a lot of reading on this site, but not a lot of posting (as you can see by my status) I read the food posts all the time to make sure that I am doing the best I can afford for my pups. That being said I feed the Costco brand Kirkland super premium. Which out here in CA is about 25 for a 40 lb bag. I only feed 3 dogs but one is a 100 lb lab and one is a GSD mix at about 60 lbs. Besides my little man Sparky who weighs in at a whopping 11 lbs. They are doing ok and since I have become unemployed it is the best I can afford. If you go to Costco.com you can order it on-line. I just wanted to point out that you resuced Sophia, so giving her a loving forever home with plenty of exercise and security is one of the best things you can do for any dog's health and well-being. I know you only want the best for your girl and belive me she is much happier with you and the best you can afford than in a cage with better food. Just like children are much happier eating beans and rice with their parents than steak without them. That being said I have always compared some of the supermarket brands (esp Kibbles n' Bits) to Lucky Charms cereal. Not a whole lot of nurtrition but a whole lot of junk that "tastes good" so the dogs just eat it up. |

Kirkland is made by Diamond Foods and they had that big aflatoxin poisoning in 2006. Were they part of the 2007 recall, too? With the melanine? In 2006 lots of dogs died. Diamond makes other brands, too. Hopefully, they got that straightened out and it won't happen again. |

I saw when I was googling Kirkland's that they were part of the recall-- but it was only their canned food, not their dry. Still. Sophie and Radar still have many days before we'll be out of Purina One, so I haven't made a decision... it's about convincing my parents. I brought up Kirkland's to my mom and she said that's what her parent's cat is on and she's not impressed... but her parents cat is also fifteen and having kidney failure, poor baby, so her looks is probably not based on Kirkland's... We've only been to the feedstore once and my mom wouldn't let me go along (she wanted to get out of the house on her own). Still, I think the goats are running out of hay tomorrow so maybe I can tag along with my little formula sheet and see what foods they have there.. |

We are down to our last half of Canidae so today I picked up Solid Gold -- Hund N Flocken and started mixing it in with their Canidae. Sonic did not seem to notice -- Sydney on the otherhand pciked out and ate all of the Hund N Flocken and left most of the Canidae. Think maybe she is telling me something?
