I am just worried that she will get sick from switching to quickly.

Does she have a sensitive tummy?

So far I think Sophia does... but she's the first dog I've EVER had who has had a sensitive tummy. Radar can switch foods every other day and it wouldn't bother him.

We used to feed whatever the feed store had, then we were convinced to switch to Nutra Nuggets, which showed no improvement at all, even though it was about 50% more expensive than the previous dog food, when I lost my job and we had no real income, we switched to Kirkland ...... both dogs became more active, are really happy and boisterous, and Lucy's coat shines like the sun ..... they really like the Kirkland Super Premium Puppy Chicken, Rice, and Vegetable formula, and it cost's $9.99 for a 20 LB bag, more than 50% less than the Nutra Nuggets Lamb and Rice we were feeding them ($22 for 20 LB bag). We're stuck on Kirkland, and don't intend to change ..... I'd vouch for it, .......

No recalls on the recall board last time I was there .... all you have to do is look on the recall board right at the customer service desk, and every recall is listed! NOT what you'll find at the local Albertson's or Safeways, for sure. I like shopping at a place that shows current recalls of products they sell anytime you go in .....

Helena, Montana - site of the Northernmost Monument to the Confederacy

Annie (Jackrat) and Lucy (Pompoo) two great dogs!

Today is Day 2 of feeding the kids Solid Gold -- Hund N Flocken (lamb and rice) and again Sydney ate all of the Solid Gold and left or spit out the Canidae.   It does not seem to be bothering her.  No gas, loose poops or vomiting.

great news about Sydney!!! Glad to hear it I think if you switched to a lesser quality she may have had more issues but both are excellent foods so not so bad on her system.

Be careful poopooing Iams. Not all Iams mixes are the same. Iams Low Residue is about the ONLY thing my Dobie could eat without getting his tummy upset. I'll take him feeling good anyday over a food that makes him sick all the time no matter how good people think their ingredients are or aren't.

I have heard awesome things abot Solid Gold though. And I might try it for my rattie and min pin who don't have any issues. But for Kiddah, even Solid Gold has stuff in it she's allergic to. Many of the dry versions of even super pristine foods include rosemary for a preservative, but that is a problem for Kiddah.

I'm not saying feed your dogs crap. I'm just sayin don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Btw I have started the dogs on the PMI Nutrition's Exclusive Lamb and Rice Adult Formula that I made another post about (I'm the OP). We bought the small bag the feed store had (18 pounds.. lol...). It also sells it in 35. It's not at affordable as Kirklands, adn I don't think it's QUITE as good, but it's comparable, and it's cheaper than what we were feeding them (Purina One), is super convienient since we're at the feedstore about twice a month for the goat's hay anyway and doesn't require a $50 membership. lol. Oh, and it's WAY better for them then Purina One.
But we only started like three days ago so I don't actually know how it'll turn out yet. Sophie seems to think it's fine, and Radar LOVES it so far... but the test will be in two or three weeks to see if there are any changes in energy, coat, stools, etc...
It cost 18.50 for 18 pounds and will cost 32.50 for 35 pounds, btw.

Wow reading all this info on dog food, has me worried.  I wish I would of read this months ago!

I have been feeding Holly Iams (proactive health) since we got her at 8 weeks, vet reccomended that one, she was given to me with a bag of Puppy Chow by purina I think.  Just recently she hasn't been eating the Iams.

So I went to pet smart yesterday and bought Natures Best Chicken & Brown Rice.  Looked like it had alot of good things in it.   Added 1/2 and 1/2.   She ate just a little bit today, so I gotta watch her to see how she does.  She is 10 months old and weighs 8-9 lbs.  All muscle.  Anyone know anything about this food? I seen these squirt bottles with different types of gravy in them to squirt on top of the dry food.  Anyone use them?  Are they good for the puppy?  Or should I just stay away from them?

JerseyGirl:  Here are the ingredients I found.  Note that this product is made by Science Diet.... One of the worst offenders out there of bad dog food.

Ingredients: Chicken, Brown Rice, Whole Grain Wheat, Cracked Pearled Barley, Soybean Meal, Chicken Meal, Pork Fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols and citric acid), Dried Egg Product, Natural Flavor, Whole Grain Oats, Apples, Cranberries, Soybean Oil, Peas, Carrots, Dried Beet Pulp, Iodized Salt, Flaxseed, Broccoli, Vitamins (L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate (source of vitamin C), Vitamin E Supplement, Niacin, Thiamine Mononitrate, Vitamin A Supplement, Calcium Pantothenate, Biotin, Vitamin B12 Supplement, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Folic Acid, Vitamin D3 Supplement), Vitamin E Supplement, Choline Chloride, Taurine, Minerals (Ferrous Sulfate, Zinc Oxide, Copper Sulfate, Manganous Oxide, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite), Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Citric Acid, Calcium Carbonate, Beta-Carotene, Rosemary Extract.

This food is WAY toop grain heavy and contains both wheat and soy, Very high offenders on the allergy list.  Also with past recalls which almost always involve wheat, i stay away from that.  The grains are mainly fillers and nutritionally absolete.  Beet pulp is a source of fiber but has shown to be used in lower quality foods as a filler and has also shown to cause bloat in deep chested dogs (which most ratties are).  And Salt?  Toatally uneccesary!!  The meat is also listed not as a "meal" but included with the water content, so in reality after the water is removed to make the food, the first 4 ingredients in the food would most likely be grains, which you don't want. JMO, but I would DEFINATELY find something else.

Well now I don't know what to feed Ollie. Most of the brands mentioned as the good ones I can't get in this area or are way too expensive. I love my baby to death but I am on a tight budget.

The only pet store is Petsmart. I have no idea what to get...

Not a big fan of the store here, no one really seems to know anything like they should if they work at a pet store.

I believe that Petsmart carries Blue Buffalo? I know thati s pretty much the only halfway decent food there and from what others have said they like it and it is affordable. You can still find affordable "good" foods. Remember that while a food may cost a little more, they generally tend to eat less so it lasts longer. My mother feeds her 15lb westie/maltese Canidae for like $25 17lbs bag. It lasts her months! We figured it out and it costs her like 10 cents/day.

Sarah Thank YOu so much for the information.  Wow I went from Bad to Worse here.  Bag saying all natural etc etc, I thought this one sounds good.  But I am new at this, havent had a dog in 23 years.  So back to pet smart I go........I will get Blue Buffalo.  SHould I mix that with her Iams that she has been on since she was 8 weeks?  Or just straight to the new food?  Thanks again

Buttin in here....but if you have any good Feed stores in your area, give them a call...most feed stores are now carrying top notch pet foods and are less expensive than chains like Petsmart, etc.

That's where I buy Yogi's food...they even have NV Raw patties!

You're lucky....I asked Pet Supply Plus here if they would be getting the NV raw patties in but they said no...no demand in the area. The closest place to get them is either Brunswick or across town in Jax....and that's not happening with only a 1/2 hr. lunch break.

I would go for any Nutro brand because they have good ingredients for the price as opposed to iams, eukanuba, or Science Diet! But Ultra would be the best but expensive cuse its the holistic brand. Nutro natural choice has plenty of good choices, although neslte did buy out the company after the recall scare a over a year ago.

I switched mine to raw diet about 5-6 weeks ago. No turning back. I pay less than I paid for quality kibble. I feed 1x per day to keep it simple. Paisley had a piece of raw boneless beef chuck and a raw chicken drumstick. I didn't have to wonder what was in it...
