Ok here goes... at the end of a very hectic week I go to relax this evening and my little Minnie keeps coughing. I'm starting to get a little concerned but don't think a whole lot of it. Then she starts acting like she is going to toss her kibbles so I take her outside and sure enough she vomits several times. So I go in the house and get a flashlight so I can go investigate. It appears to be the gel that forms when a disposable diaper gets very wet. So I go in the house to search and sure enough I come accross the diaper she has torn apart. It was a wet diaper and didn't appear to be missing a whole lot of it. My question is this... are they toxic? Will my little Minnie be ok? I've tried to google it but haven't had much luck. I have since brought her back in the house. She continues to cough some but no more vomiting. Help!!! |

| Call your local emergency vet (the call is free). My concern is that there may be a possibility of intestinal blockage. Has she defecated as well? |

you would think it would have to be non toxic to be putting on a baby they can do as much damage to their own diaper as a puppy. |

I don't know who the emergency vet is. I'm just watching her. She seems to be sleeping though not very well. I know that they wouldn't put anything in diapers that are toxic to children but it seems dogs are different. Chocolate and raisins are poison to dogs so Im not sure about diapers. I will wait it out and see. Thanks for the advice and info!

| under vets in the phone book, there should be ads for e-vets/24 hr vets, I know where all my local ones are...I've had to make late night runs to the vet when my dobie ate a rock and it got stuck in the intestines, and when Lucy had hives, etc. I hope Minnie is okay. Keep us posted. |

Actually, as far as I know, that stuff in the diapers is silicone and it IS harmful...unless you're using "green" disposable diapers, such as 7th Generation, which don't contain all the nasty chemical components of regular diapers. Though it might be safe for your kids rump (and I always doubted they were totally safe, even though I used them), diapers obviously aren't mean to be eaten, LOL - though when you buy a new purse, they always come with the little package that says "Dessicate - DO NOT EAT." So maybe they should put the warning on diapers as well now, LOL. Plus, the diapers are usually filled with fragerance and that can't be good to eat, either. Seriously though, I'd definitely call the vet. We all know the dangers of ruptured silicone breast implants...not sure if it would have the same effect on a dog's tummy, but it would be enough to worry me sick. |

Here is the # for Animal Poison control center. We used it when my dog broke a glass thermometer in her mouth and it had mercury in it. We had to pay for the info because that is how they make money but they are wonderful people. As the premier animal poison control center in North America, the APCC is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. If you think that your pet may have ingested a potentially poisonous substance, make the call that can make all the difference: (888) 426-4435. A $60 consultation fee may be applied to your credit card. |

ok here is what I have found online:
In our online community, someone inquired about a baby who had eaten some of the gel out of her diaper. I was pleased to answer this query, but I want to be sure that every parent and grandparent and sitter knows about Poison Control Centers. This free 24-hour service is the first place to call whenever a child has ingested something suspicious. Thankfully, diaper gel is a nontoxic water-absorbing substance that passes through kids without doing harm. There is a theoretical risk that it could swell inside as it absorbed water, causing intestinal blockage, but I have never heard of this happening. While safe, I wouldn't recommend diaper gel as a culinary treat!
So now i know the gel isn't toxic to humans, though not good for them either. But still no luck finding if it is toxic for Minnie. She has stopped coughing and has been able to poo so I know her intestines can't be blocked. In fact at 4 AM she is snoozing on my bed without a care in the world! Ugh....What a mess. She has all the sudden started getting into the trash which is where she found the diaper to begin with. Guess we will have to run them to dumpster every time now! |

So through some more searching on the internet I've found the gel is a non toxic polymer that is in powder form until it gets wet. At least now I know that it isn't silicone and I can go from there. She is still sleeping sound so maybe everything will be ok. I have been up all night monitoring her and she is acting normal. In the morning (at a decent time anyway) I will call the vet. They are open for a few hours on Sat. Thanks to all for you thoughts and info!! |

| I would be sure to put diapers where she cannot get to them from now on. May not be toxic but can't be pleasant either! |

Thank goodness. I was like...99% sure it was silicone. I'm glad I was wrong though. I was worried about Minnie!! Our min-pin used to be a diaper thief. I don't know why they love to eat them. How disgusting is THAT?! I finally bought a Diaper Genie, which I HATED, but it did keep him from eating the diapers and I didn't have to run outside everytime I changed a diaper. I had a winter baby. That was miserable for a few weeks! |

| So glad your Minnie is okay! How is she today? Did you talk to the vet? On a side note - I don't think dogs eating diapers is nearly disgusting as our ratties loving to raid the catbox. Ewwwwww! |

Ok so Minnie is back to her energy filled self today! She is terrorizing the kids and bouncing off the walls (when she isn't napping to get more energy to do the above!) I called the vet this morning and believe it or not this is a common thing among dogs! The vet says that she will be fine. Some dogs don't have any problems with it while others get upset tummys like Minnie did. Just to let you all know I always keep the diapers up where she can't get them, but this one was thrown in the bathroom trash that is down at her level. I had my son throw it away when I was giving the baby a bath and had assumed he had taken it to the kitchen trash. My home right now is baby proofed for my 14 month old and I'm going through and re proofing it since Minnie gets into more than the baby does!! Anyway thanks for all your concern, advice and well wishes!! |
