For Watts...I would consider asking for a titer test to ascertain his immunities. Only prob is it's cost...like $150 or so.

But...do it once and probably able to convince Vet to avoid those shots for a few more years..so balances out.

No choice with Rabies...BUT even in Savannah, some Vets get together and do a clinic for Rabies in random Parking lots once a year...$10 a dog/cat.

Perhaps this exists in your area...or you can get something like that started in your community. It encourages people who would otherwise never innoculate their animals for Rabies.

In England they "bait" wild animals with Rabies antiviral...clever. (They have a rabid-fox issue...even as careful and strict they have been!)

I think Hawaii is the ONLY Rabies free US state???? Not certain.

Our island has had severe Coon and Otter outbreaks lately....so I AM for it...BUT....

I really don't see why the 5 yr is not the accepted vac...would be so effective esp with folks who rarely/never vet their animals....

If Yogi had any kind of illness/weakness I would take the chance and NOT vac him with Rabies...until he recovered. It can be that dangerous....

Again...just my own opinion...

Thanks for the answer Sarah

Very interesting thread--I worry about over vaccinating--In fact I put off Nora's Lime vacine, because she had so many other ones, I got scared for some reason. I used tick gel

Yogi mom--interesting about England VS America with the sentient being vs chattel. That is why people do not get the sentences they deserve when the kill someones pet--It is not like a life was takenGRRRRRRRRRRRRR

ok i have a question for you guys i am all for rabies shot's with all the wild animals around here (i also think we have 3 lions and 2 cougars running around to lower the deer pop.) well anyways when we got BB the "breeder" said they have not yet had their rabies shot cause the last litter that got them they had died now BB is 13 1/2 weeks old will it be safe to get him his shots??? i am way to attached to have something go wrong.Any idea's????

BBsMom: I hope I'm misunderstanding you, but young puppies (as far as i'm aware) aren't supposed to get rabies' shots. The first rabies vaccine isn't given until usually 6mos. of age. Here in Ohio that first shot can only be a one year vaccine, then a year after that they can begin getting 3 year rabies vaccinations.

no no no... in NY it is part of the puppy shots... last of them at weeks 12 along with lyme shots at 12 and 16 weeks. then the boosters are annual.

Yeah, 6 we have the rabies at anywhere from 12-20 weeks depending on the vet here. Then again at 1 year, then every 3 years. I am a firm supporter of pushing it as far as they will let you and seperating from other shots.

Oh, thanks guys, wasn't aware. Here rabies is not part of the puppy shots. It is not given to 6 months of age initially. Daisy's personal vet refuses to give rabies in conjunction with other shots, they are always separated by a at least 2 weeks, preferably a month.

im surprised... rabies and lyme shots are "pushed" to be given almost immediately... our pottymouth schedule was like this...
1st and maybe 2nd pup vacc from breeder... 2nd and or 3rd at 8 weeks... and 2 weeks later the rabies and 1st lyme...
2 weeks after that it was last lyme and pup vacc. at age 16 weeks we were done with both pups.

I don't know about Lyme as I don't give it, But Jack was bombarded with rabies and 2nd set of puppy shots at the same time 2 12weeks. Will never do that again. Just didn;t know any better at the time.

again due to the tick population LYME is WAAAAAAAY important here... 2 SHOTS... and it makes their tooshies sore... even to a gentle petting for a day... its a "thick" shot too... i have never heard my babies YELP sooo loud before!

OUCH! That Lyme shot sounds pretty scary?!

Don't think any of my dogs have ever had it. Never was mentioned anyway...

Is there a spray/dip/oil  (Pyrethens, or something herbal?) that could be used instead??? I know ticks are seasonal in most areas...

Maybe that would be an option???

If the dog is a hunting dog, or always in the grasses and woods, and always outside exposed..guessing It would be a good  idea to protect them with that vaccine.....

Out here there isn't much lyme disease and I have not heard of that vac given routinely. We do not have to vaccinate our pups for rabies before 6 months, then the next year they will get the 3 year shot. Our vet won't do the three year shot first cause he thinks it will cause problems, he checks after the one year shot too. We do have ticks though. and fleas. and various other discusting paracites. We did not have heart worm until a very strange person with a hundred or so dogs came to the area from the south. Most of her dogs were infested with heartworm and we have mosquitos mucho, so as a result all dogs around here are given heartworm meds routinely. It was a very sad and weird story at the time, the person was not right in the head and did not care for the dogs properly at all.
I give the pups their first three shots if they stay with me long enough. It is cheaper and easier and they don't get exposed to parvo in the vets office that way. That happens more than you would think.

not that i am offended but im B&Bs PAPA!!! lol  i believe there is nothing better than being safe!!! you are in NYC right? so i am sure you regularly dont really need to worry... but coming even 15 mins north of NYC to Yonkers its a concern... its like this... you dont need Kennel Cough Vacc unless you are planning to kennel your dog... so then you get it... i would get the lyme shot and atleast you have protection... then if you decide to continue it with boosters its uip to you depending on how many times you come up north, just my $0.02
