Hi guys, sorry if this has been addressed many times but I know I will get the best answers if I just ask. How likely is for a girl to go inot heat when she has just turned 6th months? Is it common or more comon later on. Do the girls have to be showing blood to be in heat? Are they firtile when bleeding or after it stops or all times of the heat cycle. Nora just turned 6 months today and she has been acting odd. Or I can she was being pursued by an un nueterd male in the dog park. I seperated and sat on the bench with her a few minutes. The owner of the unfixed dog, told me he had never went after a girl like that, and we both started to think maybe she was in heat. I know humping can be dominance related, but I certainly and taking no chances--She will NOT be a mommie unless her original breeder was involved--and I do not want that either, nor does the breeder from what I gather. There no reproduction! Any information about heat cycles would be useful--or course I am cruising the net like crazy about it. I would hate to confine her for no reason. Sorry this is so long---you all have been real help to me with my allergies - I feel like i should make a donation--Does this board have maintnece costs? xoxo mel

The only female dog I've dealt with going into heat is my dobie...she didn't come into her first heat until she was about 8 months old. The first thing I always notice is she starts acting strange (hypersensitive, needy/clingy) a few weeks before she comes into heat. Her girlie parts swell up (there will be no doubt when you see it), and paying extra attention to that area...then the bleeding starts. Basically from the time the bleeding starts, it's a week into it, a week where she is fertile and can become pregnant, and a week out...roughly 3 wks of bleeding. The way you described it, either she's in heat, or getting ready to come into heat...my males were interested in Rosie from the time she barely started bleeding.

Lisabeth covered it pretty well. And dogs can come into heat as early as 4 months so 6 months would be completely normal. It does sound like she might be starting to come into heat....is her "snivey" swelling? Teats getting more prominent? Acting any differently? Personally, I would keep her separated from any unneutered males. She is way too young to get pregnant...not worth the risk. JMO

Hi Mel, were you going to get her spayed? If so, now is the time (before her heat comes in).

I don't know much about female dogs in heat. I had the "urge" to breed Lil'Bit (my black doxie) and when she came into heat she also went into a false pregnancy and it was horrible!! Ended up having to put her on male hormones to pull her out of it and it lasted three months, after which I IMMEDIATELY had her spayed. WHAT was I thinking? I'm not a breeder and still to this day don't know what got into to me to even THINK I wanted to breed her. But I went through that whole "she's so cute and I would love to have one of her puppies, etc. etc. etc." ... NOT the right reason to breed IMO. (hindsight is SO 20/20, isn't it?). She's the most neurotic dog I've ever owned and to have bred her would have served no useful purpose other than to pass those traits on to her puppies. But I digress... I agree with Bethany -- now is the time to get her spayed.

Thanks---guys- Mary beth---She is segrated--I live in an apartment- no yard--no boy dogs--Her only exposure is in a dog park and that is over until I am sure she is clear. Gwacie--I have really struggled with the fact of spaying her. As I said I WOULD NEVER BREED her even though she is a great candidate-- I have decided to have her go through one cycle --it is controversial and I don't flame so I never talked about it--Don't want people to be mad at me--- Mary b---NO boys around her at ALL she will not get pregnant---she is way to young--she is a puppy-- breeding material Nora, I am not even tempted to get her puppies--I plan on having her cloned!!!!!! I know that is mentally ill eheh)) thanks folks One more Important question--how do you know when it is OVER??? That would be the hardest thing to determine..

Her "snivey"? OMG I can't stop laughing!! My dogs hoo-ha's have new names!!! They can go through silent heats (no blood) as far as I know. And the bleeding for 3 weeks is annoying! What's more annoying though is the neediness for the few weeks before!! Sue is always all over me! I can't wait to get her altered now that we've found a vet who will do it at an advanced age!!

I totally blanked out on the snivey thing--would that be her unine? Her unine seems to be more more abundent and looks to be a bit darker and thicker? It used to be that it was almost totally clear and had no smell at ALL.. I did make one mistake though--she is only 5 months old not 6---but as mb said it could happen earlier. I spoke to my vet and she said she is to young, but I think my vet is to young to know what she is talking about--I am getting a new one. About her being more needy--she is so needy in the first place, but it seems that she might be more so--she is getting jumpy and wiggly and very active. Tabitha, when you say advanced age, how old do you mean?? thanks mel
