I have Met Life pet insurance for Fredo. I get it through work and it's auto deducted from my paycheck. I also have the maint rider which pays for annual office visits and vaccinations. The maint rider is pretty much a wash as the extra premium is about as much as the cost for his annual checkup and shots. Luckly I haven't needed it for anything else so far. Is it worth it? Still undecided yet but nice to know it's there in case we need it. Only bad thing is you have to pay your vet up front and submit a claim for reimbersement.

I have the ASPCA Health Insurance for Fred.  It is totally worth it for me, as Fred turned out to have some allergy issues early on that required quite a few visits to the vet.  I also took the option that covered his neutering.  If you are thinking about it, just do it as early as possible.  They will obtain your vet record and not cover any pre-existing issues.  I got mine after my friend ended up paying $3,000 for surgery when his dog was attacked at dog beach.  There are several options, you just have to pick one that's good for you.

Here is the ASPCA comparison chart for their plans. The cheapest one is $9.50 and the most expensive $77.00 a month.  I guess there's something in there for everyone. There are a lot of other companies too, I don't remember why I ended up choosing ASPCA but I know I researched about 5 of the major ones.

Im interested in this as well. Do you have to take your doggie to aspca to get the benefits (like spaying) or can i take her to my regular vet?

I purchased a plan when I first got Yogi at 8 yrs old because I was scared he'd have to have some major surgery or something that would completely WIPE out my savings. If I'd gotten him as a puppy I would've started putting away money every month for vet emergencies but with him being older I didn't want to take the chance.

So far we've used it twice, we have Pets Best it is 40.00 a month and we have a plan that doesn't cover routine stuff but covers 80% after a 75.00 deductible up to 7500.00 per incident for other things. You have to be careful with plans because they don't cover a lot of breed related things or what they call pre-existing conditions. However, I have been pretty happy so far with Pets Best, they've paid what they said they would both times Yogi had to go to the vet for something besides his regular checkups. Still I've paid in much more than I've used, but that's why insurance companies can exist in the first place. I do think if he ever had to have a major surgery it could pay out far more than I ever put in as long as they didn't find a reason to dispute it which I would worry about. It does reimburse and I usually have my check within two weeks.

Oh yes and one more thing, some plans I've heard complaints about because they have a "schedule of benefits" saying they will pay X amount for this procedure and X amount for that one and no more. Since vets prices can vary a lot, this can be very dissapointing to some people who only get a fraction back of what they were expecting. There was a plan I was looking into once and they allowed 30.00 for a vet appointment, well my vet charges $63.00 so I'd have to pay the rest, likewise with other things. I'd be careful about those "schedule of benefits." I chose Pets Best because they don't have one, they claim they pay 80% after the deductible with no cap on different procedures.

Most people I've talked to though, think in general it is a rip off.

I looked into it when I adopted Sasha when she was 13 about 6 years ago. The rates were ridiculous!! It was going to cost like $125 a month and it covered squat. Granted, in the 5+ years I had her, I paid out over $10,000 in vet bills, but to me that doesn't matter... I figured why pay out an additional $125.00 a month when that hardly covered any of the issues she had?

I have 3 other babies now - Benny is about 2 or 3, Kaci's about 5 or 6, Snoopy is like 7 or 8 and Sandy's like 8 or 9. I don't see dishing out major buckage in fear of what may happen in the future. Hopefully they'll all remain relatively healthy and I'll only have to pay for wellness visits and yearly physicals!!
