Except giving away.

I have been having some bad allergies lately--Nora was not the cause, there were a whole battery of things--I was exposed to harsh fracrences, they are digging out my lawn and producing toxic mud and pollen, and I have eaten to much dairy and meat---GRRRRRRRrr

Usually I am ok but I just lost my immune sytem to all this crap--now of course I am sensitive to nora in ways that I have not been in a long time.

I am going through lots of moods about this--I need to get better and I would NEVER REHOLM NORA--that is not even up for disucssion

Has anyone overcome allergies??  Holistically or medically, or lifestyle?  Has anyone been allergic to dog and fixed it?

Would like to hear anything positive on this as I am sad about this--I love nora so much and I cant even touch her right now--she is with my husband---

thanks -  Mel

have you tried any over the counter allergy meds such as zyrtec or claritan or benedryl? i would just bathe her and use a special shampoo. have you gone to your doc and asked him for something or what he would suggest.? try over the counter things first and see what happens!!!! GOOD LUCK

I've never had allergies to dogs but when I cared for a stray cat my eyes would itch and water terribly whenever I touched her.  I read about apple cider vinegar at  earthclinic.com,  tried it, and it really worked.  I could pet and hold the cat without sneezing or itching.  I mixed two tablespoons of acv in a half cup of water, then stirred in a quarter teaspoon of baking soda. (you need to use an 8 oz glass or larger because the vinegar/water will bubble up and fizz when the baking soda is added)  I added some orange juice or sprite to improve the taste and drank it twice a day.  The acv is supposed to be raw and unfiltered,  not the stuff you find at the grocery store.  I had to buy it at a health food store until the grocery store (Kroger) started stocking it in the organic food section.

MY BROTHER was allergic to dogs or any animals when he was little it was the dander and the saliva they had if they licked him in the face or he petted an animal we had to make sure his hands were clean before he touched his face or any part of his body. especially his face though his eyes would swell up and then it would be very hard for him to breathe. he still is like that he carries inhalers with him all the time.

If none of that works, you could always do allergy shots as a last resort. They're a pain, but they're worth it. I never finished mine (got laid off and lost my insurance) but I could tell BIG a difference.

Are ya itchin? Sneezin? What's ailin' ya?? I might have more suggestions if I knew exactly what's going on. For now, I second what everyone else said. I bathe Pix in Pure Shampoo. It leaves her kind of dry, but its hypoallergenic and Earth friendly. It's right at $6 at Wal-Mart.

Thank you everyone!

Ski--I will try the apple cider, baking soda asap

Tauney--allergy pills tend to make it worse or cause mood swings--there is some real powerful stuff in Zyrtec that narcatizes. Also pills are not a cure for allergies--I think they come back worse! But I do appreciate your answer

Ivy--I will try the shampoo)

Susanna---First off sorry you lost your insurance for the shots!! I am considering them although the first MD i had for them was a quack who overdosed me and I was violenty sick for weeks after shot. I know ya gotta get some poisin in to get cured, but he was a factory. If I go I will go to a good one)

These are my symtoms. There are different with animals and dust and dirt than the food ones.

For the dog, my eyes were itchy and nose was dry at first--I was recommeded lamb and rice to feed her and dog oil. I did that religiosly (pardon my bad spelling, I write to fast and don't check). After a week or so I was fine hugging kissing and stroking with a very occasion tinge, but I was very happy.

The dust and dirt start out similaly but get deeper in my lungs and are more embedded, that of course makes nora more toxic for me becasue I am more vulerable.

The food, which is totally my fault comes from repetition. I can eat anything I want--but if I do it over and over my sythem breaks down.

For some reason I though I could eat red meat day after day, after eating it maybe once a month for years. When the food allergies kick in all hell breaks loose.

I get reflux (gross) acid in my esopicans dry nose sneesing and the worst, the dry cough. I also become sensitive to all foods and allergins at that point.

Well I had a totat break down this time. Dirt, food, fragrence, dust, you name it!!!

I have had a hacking dry cough, spurred on by a nasty tickle in my thought that brings it on. My sinusus fill up and I cant blow my nose--

everything is haywire.

Alot of this is my fault, something have been out of my control, but my sadness due to nora being one of the allergins has been profound.

My doctor sneered when I said if would not remove her. I know this can be handled--I need to belive that.

This sounds quite intense but I had faith that if I stop abusing my body that I will be able to tolerate her as I have for some time.

I will try all the remedies and eat a balanced diet with more fruits and veggies and chicken--that seems to help--no meat for a while.

Once again thanks--))

I have severe allergies, dogs are on the list (but mold, pollen, dust mites, cats and other thigns are higher on the list).

Here are things I have done:
1) got rid of the carpet and installed only hard floors (wood/tile/linoleum)- everything I have that is a rug is machine washable. Also no curtains, instead I have plantation blinds (2" easy to clean slats).
2) air filters - I have a hepa system on my central furnace/air unit AND an extra one in my bedroom - a big one that does a good job
3) don't sleep with nora in the room - night time is the worst for allergies
4) hypo allergenic bedding
5) if you are allergic to dust mites get that house cleaned including having the vents blown out.

I find if i can keep a lid on the allergies as a whole then the dogs don't send me over the top. There is some sort of allergen reducing stuff you can give to the animals, not sure if it is oral or a bath product but check on that too.

OH one more, I forgot, no dogs in the bedroom until you get things contained again. We do let 2 in our room now, but when my allergies were flaring they were not allowed in with us.

There used to be a product called AllerPet for Dogs.  It is a solution that you put on the pet so you have less of an allergic reaction to them.  It does work.  I also have severe allergies and asthma and I tried shots for years and they didn't help.  Zyrtec gave me horrible shoulder pain and not much relief.  So now I take a homeopathic formula called Allergy MD and it has helped with no side effects.  See if you can find someone in your are who sells Standard Process Vitamins (they are whole food vitamins, not synthetic vitamins) to boost your immune system.  Air cleaners also help as does making sure the furnace ducts and filters are clean.

I've got horrible allergies too. Zrytec works fine for me....doesn't effect my moods or anything. (At least not in a bad way or hubby would have let me know! LOL). You can also try Singulair..it's not just for asthma but works on allergies, too. Antihistimines have allowed me to live a normal life so I can't knock 'em.

Guys!! Thank you--I was have alot of feelings of shame about this. And It took me a while to post---Now that I see some of the top dog's here) have been dealing with allergies I do not feel like a fool for getting nora -- I did not think I deserved her after I got sick---She part of my soul--don't know if that is pathology, but there is!!

I have a feeling that Singular might help--because even though I do not have athma--this can mimic it. And I will have to get the house de dusted.

and I will kill people wear purfume--only kidding.

Also one other thing. I am most allergic to cleaning products, so I got something called Method and the products made me much worse. I am going to have to use all natural stuff like vinagar and citrus to clean.

xoxoo from mel and nora.

Aw, perfumes send me into instant asthma attacks and migraineville. So does ciggie smoke. Even traces of this stuff is tough. And for cleaners I use BLEACH, VINEGAR, HOT WATER in copious amounts. I also make my own laundry soap and other products because I can not tolerate most scents unless they are completely natural (like I am ok with my lavender plant but not ok with most artificial lavender scented stuff).

Never fear, you can work this out and silly wabbit, why would you feel guilty about getting Nora? She's a wonderful person...erm..dog (ok BOTH Nora's on this board are super duper).

Gwacie-where I live we were never allowed to have dogs and when I heard they changed it, I went into overdrive, and when I saw noras pic I made a snap desion to get her--knowing that I had a past of allergies, although never seriouly to dogs.

I had heard about hypo allergenic dogs -- but I wanted a RAT...not a shnoodle ahahh. So I felt that I should have played it safe with a labradoodle....but was willful and got nora--that was my guilty--now that I know so many of you are living with it, I feel much better

Method cleaners are the "crap" of all-natural cleaners!!  And to top if off, they typically charge more than the brands that are TRULY natural.  I don't trust them.  For a long time, they never put the ingredients on their packaging.  They claimed to be natural products, and while some ingredients WERE, they were still adding things like sodium laureth sulfate, which is highly toxic.  They now list ingredients, but I don't like them based on what I already knew about the way they do things.

1.  Shaklee...expensive, but GREAT.  And they last a long time.  You pay more, but they really do last a lot much longer.

2.  Clorox GreenWorks...love this stuff!  The all-purpose cleaner cleans better than conventional, chemical based products, in my opinion.  Actually,  the entire line cleans better than anything I've ever bought at a regular store (you order Shaklee through a rep, usually).

Baking soda and vinegar are also fantastic cleaners!  Murphy's Oil Soap is 100% vegetable oil if you need something for your furniture.  There are several readily available laundry detergents, fabric softeners, soaps....I could go on for days...that are all-natural, too.
