Just received this... cross-posted from another list I'm on....
Upcoming changes to Canidae formulations
Admin | June 30, 2008 3:56 pm
I wanted to give a heads up to dog owners feeding Canidae products about a
few details that the makers of this product aren't telling you in their
sales pitch for their changed formulas:
Under the new formulation, Canidae dry foods will no longer be gluten free,
due to the addition of barley. If you know that your dog is gluten
intolerant, start shopping around for a different food.
Even if your dog doesn't have problems with gluten (not all do, and many
foods do contain high-gluten grains like barley), the change in formulation
to include rice bran and peas may contribute to gas and digestive upset.
Dogs who aren't particularly sensitive may not have any problems at all,
others will get over it within a few days of transitioning, but again, for
individuals with a delicate digestive system, expect that they may no longer
tolerate the product.
Millet is generally well tolerated, but again, it doesn't work for every
dog.
"Diversifying" ingredients may sound catchy, and Canidae certainly has made
an effort to put a positive spin on it in their statement, but please
remember that not all dogs do well on foods that include a wide variety of
items.
Also note that "Herring Meal" will be replaced by generic "Ocean Fish Meal",
meaning the company reserves the possibility to use different fish from
batch to batch without having to change the ingredient list. This has not
been addressed in their statement at all.
Whether these changes are indeed an improvement, as Canidae claims, is for
you to decide - after observing how it affects your dog.

Canidae Chicken & Rice
(Note that after the change it's no longer going to be a true "Chicken and
Rice" formula, but instead a "Chicken, Rice, Barley and Peas" formula)
Old Formula: <http://canidae. com/dogs/ chicken-and- rice/dry. html>

The old formula has already been overwritten. "Lamb and Rice" formula will
now also be a misnomer - even though it's legal as far as labeling
regulations go. This is the current ingredient list:
Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, Canola Oil (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols) , Flax
Seed, Sun cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Lamb, Lecithin, Potassium
Chloride, Choline Chloride, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract,
Dried Enterococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Dried Lactobacillus
Acidophilus Fermentation Product, Dried Aspergillus Oryzae Fermentation
Extract, Dried Bacillus Subtilis Fermentation Extract, Inulin (from Chicory
Root), Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Fermentation Solubles, L-Lysine, Taurine,
Yucca Schidigera Extract, Mixed Tocopherols (source of Vitamin E), Zinc
Amino Acid Chelate, Manganese Amino Acid Chelate, Iron Amino Acid Chelate,
Copper Amino Acid Chelate, Cobalt Amino Acid Chelate, Vitamin A Supplement,
Vitamin D3 Supplement, Ascorbic Acid (source of Vitamin C), Niacin, Thiamine
Mononitrate (Vitamin B1), Riboflavin (source of Vitamin B2), Beta Carotene,
Calcium Pantothenate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride (Vitamin B6), Calcium Iodate,
Folic Acid, D-Biotin, Organic Selenium, Dried Papaya, Dried Pineapple,
Vitamin B12 Supplement

There was another thread about this. Thanks anyway! Yeah, it's disappointing, and I'm thinking about switching. Petco carries Wellness now. |

| This is aggravating! I am pleased with Canidae the way it is. I have such a problem getting ANY type quality dog food and now I may have to change. |

You've gotta be kidding me.
OK... so I bought a bag of Caidae but haven't started the dogs on it because of Murphy's little stomach bout... now I tihnk I'll just avoid upsetting their diet with the change if they are changing the formula.
Grumpy face. Big sigh. Where is my vodka? |

| Well, I have a 40lb bag of canidae that hasn't been opened yet, so I assume it's the old formula. At least that will give me a little time to decide if I'm gonna stay with the new formula or find something else. I guess I'll be checking out the PetSmart in Macon tomorrow. We don't have a Petco anywhere near. I'll see if the carry Wellness or Natures Balance. Sigh.... |

I'm not sure when they will be changing it. I think if you were to go pick some up, it would still be the old formula. I've heard they're changing the bag design as well.
But you have to appreciate that they're being striaght forward with this instead of trying to delay it and cover it up for a while, unlike other companies. |

| Canidae isn't really merging with them. Diamond is going to make some of their dry food. But then Canidae also gets it's food from a plant called Pied Piper in Texas. It doesn't worry me as much as the ingredient changes. |

| right now I have been playing around with natures recipe farmstand selects, all has been good, but I also bought the natures recipe chicken and rice, the bag left a grease spot in my cabnet where the bag sat, not the farm stand selects, so I will never again buy the chicken and rice, but Im thinking the farm stand selects might be a keeper I tried eagle pack, way too many digestive ingredients in it for my bullmastiff mix, peanut has no problems with any food, its chloe my bullmastiff mix that was eating the recalled food before. now has digestive issues with foods so Im very carefull |

Diamond's food was recalled because of it's rice/corn/wheat gluten. Canidae is going to be purchasing it's own raw materials as far as I've heard, and Diamond is just going to be making it. I hope Canidae doesn't really start going down hill after this...it probably will, though. We still have practically an entire bag of the old formula left, so we won't be switching for a while. I've been thinking of Wellness or solid gold...probably wellness. |

the diamond recall Im looking about happoned in 2005 and then again in2006, had to due with fungus,Im sorry I should have said that, had nothing to do with the last gluten recall Recall -- Firm Press Release FDA posts press releases and other notices of recalls and market withdrawals from the firms involved as a service to consumers, the media, and other interested parties. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company. Diamond Pet Food Recalled Due to Aflatoxin Contact: Mark Brinkman 573-229-4203 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- December 20, 2005 -- Diamond Pet Food has discovered aflatoxin in a product manufactured at our facility in Gaston, South Carolina. Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring toxic chemical by-product from the growth of the fungus Aspergillus flavus, on corn and other crops. Out of an abundance of caution, we have notified our distributors and recommended they hold the sale of all Diamond Pet Food products formulated with corn that were produced out of our Gaston facility (see complete list below). Please note that products manufactured at our facilities in Meta, Missouri and Lathrop, California are not affected. The Gaston facility date codes are unique from other Diamond facility codes in that either the eleventh or twelfth character in the date code will be a capital "G" (in reference to Gaston). The range of date codes being reviewed are "Best By 01-March-07" through Best By " 11-June-07". Diamond's quantitative analysis records substantiate that Diamond's corn shipments were definitively clear of aflatoxin after December 10. As such, "Best By 11-June-07" date codes or later are not affected by this notice. States serviced by our Gaston facility include Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky (eastern), Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, West Virginia, Vermont, and Virginia. We are rapidly analyzing retained samples of all products produced in Gaston so we can isolate specific lot numbers impacted and provide this information to our distributors, retailers and customers as quickly as possible. Meanwhile, if your pet is showing any symptoms of illness, including sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, yellowish tint to the eyes and/or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea, please consult your veterinarian immediately. |

In that case, it does really concern me. If something goes wrong at the plant again, and Canidae doesn't catch it... I was talking about the 2007 recall when all the ingredients in China were contaminated. I didn't know Diamond had another one before that. |

Canidae is doing this because supposedly their current facilities can't keep up with the demand. Maybe if enough people stop buying it, Canidae won't have to use Diamond. I sent an email to Canidae, but all I got was a link to a page on their website. No answers. Bleh. It's probably wellness for Sam...I just got a reply back from Solid Gold in response to an email I sent and I am not really impressed. |

That's a valid point. Will Canidae even have anybody to check quality control or are they depending on Diamond to police themselves. Diamonds recall for their dry food was reportedly because of moldy grains. They either missed it in their inspections or caught it and used it anyway. Not good either way. Supposedly they have better quality control procedures now but that doesn't mean squat to the owners of over 100 dogs that died. Personally, I'm sticking to several Eagle Pack formulas. They seem to have good quality control, they make their own food, and their nutritionist appears to be open, honest, and forthcoming with information (according to the dogfoodproject). Plus, my dogs love it.
