We just rushed our black lab, (Sadie) Sue Sue, to the vet.  She seemed lethargic and short of breath, and she was shaking.  She also favored her right leg and wouldn't put much weight on the left, though that was the least of my concerns.

Here's the clincher...when we adopted her, she had a heavy load of heartworms.  The vet advised us against treatment and figured we'd just keep her with us and keep her happy until her time was up.  We also didn't give her Heartgard because the old vet said it could make a heavy load even worse (I didn't get it, but I trusted his word...).  He also wouldn't spay her because she was older.

The vet asked us if she had heartworms tonight and I told her that Sue indeed had a heavy load of them.  She ran the antigen test and it was NEGATIVE.  She said that sometimes, the population dwindles and they just go away.    I've never heard of this, but I don't claim to know everything there is about dogs, either.

Then, the woman also said she'd spay her if her kidney and liver function tests come back normal!    Holy crap, I AM ELATED...and crossing my fingers for normal test results.

Everything physically checked out fine tonight.  She thinks she may have hurt her foot/leg and this was a pain response.  I can't figure out how Sue could have hurt herself since she's my shadow.  I do nothing without the dog at my side.  You'd think I would have seen her get hurt.  She gave her a sedative to help her sleep tonight and we're going back at 8 am for the follow up.

PLEASE keep your fingers crossed.  We may get many more years out of old Sue yet!!!

Oh, I was soo excited (maybe prematurely, we'll know for sure in a few hours) that I completely forgot to mention the little rattie I saw in a cage hooked up to an IV. I mentioned to the vet what a pretty little rat terrier she was and the vet said, "She sure is. But she's a real sick little girl. She's in kidney failure. She's been in that cage, hooked up to an IV for a week now." My heart just broke for her. If I could give her one of my kidneys, I'd do it without a second thought.

She looked at me, cocked her head to the side and perked up her ears, but she couldn't do much else. I nearly cried. I was wondering if all you kind folks could send out a few healing thoughts and some prayers. She really needs them.

There was no name tag or owner listed on her cage, whereas with the other dogs, there was. I wonder if she came from a shelter who sent her there when she got sick, or if someone found her and brought her in...I am going to ask when I get there later. There's no way I can afford to take care of a sickly dog (not with 2 senior dogs that could get sick at the drop of a hat), but if she somehow pulls through this, at least I know I'm in the right place to find her some help, if she in fact has no family.

I so hope that things go well today for your lab. Sounds like she's really done some "healing" on her own.
I know how you feel about the little rattie. I would love to work around animals, but could not stand it when I could not do anything for them. I will definitely say some prayers for the little girl, as well as for you and Sadie Sue Sue.

I'll keep the little rattie and your Sadie Sue Sue in my prayers. Doesn't sound like your old vet was on the ball.

Sending healing thoughts to your lab and to the sick little rattie.  Wishing them both a speedy recovery and good test results.

K. Sue has an infection of some sort. Her white count was double what it should have been. She's on antibiotics for 7 days, and in 10 days, she goes back for another CBC w/differentials. If her white count is still elevated at that point, we've got to do an immediate spay because the vet thinks she may have a uterine infection. If her levels go down, we can schedule it at our convienience. The medicine seems to be making her gag over and over. I gave it to her several hours ago and while its subsided a little, she's still doing it. I suppose I'll give the vet a call tomorrow. I was shocked that our bill, with EVERYTHING including calling the vet in from her house in the middle of the night wasn't even $300. I almost had a stoke because it was so cheap!

The little rattie has a family, thank goodness, but she still needs our prayers. They don't even see a small recovery happening. I wanted to scoop her up and hold her.

Thanks everyone!!
