My husband found a lab puppy in the street running scared. We put up flyers, ads in the paper and craigslist, called our local animal control and checked for a chip. We will NOT send it to the pound. My husband fell in love we would love to add it to our family of two ratties and a cat. My question is how long do we wait to call it ours. We want to take to to the vet and get it all checked out and start shots. We have had it for five days. I forgot we also called all the local vets. thanks for your opinions. |

| Did animal control check it for a chip, with a scanner?I would say, take it to the nearest vet, maybe they will recognize it. Good luck. |

Yes our vet scanned her for a chip. We think she is around 4 months old. |

| Check with your local or county animal control. They should be familiar with the rules regarding that. |

For reference: My county shelter says it will hold an unlicensed stray for 4 days, then it becomes property of the shelter. |

I guess I would check with animal control but 7-10 day of not seeing your flyers and it is yours.Except if they left it in the care of someone and are on vacation but the someone should see your flyers. Maybe it got dumped because they couldn't find it a home and they are tired of puppies after having a litter. Good luck |

| I considered Pixie "ours" after one day since she looked neglected, but I did search for her owners for one month. I figured if they hadn't come forward by then, they probably weren't going to. |

| It's a little different when you foster - you go into it KNOWING you are NOT keeping the dog. Hard to explain. It still is a little tough to give them up, esp. the great ones, but it's different too. It helps if you already have a house full of dogs of your own too. |

That's an awful long time!! You would think that a caring owner would be looking diligently to find their lost pet in a shorter amount of time. |

| That is a long time. We found my Bailey and I've had her four years now, we tried to find her owner but never did but for the longest time I was so scared that someone was gonna come and take her away. I still wonder what her past was but guess I will never know. |

| I would just act as though this baby is already yours. Get the shots she needs. And, like you're already doing, love her. Ninety days seems like a long time, but realistically, if the family wanted her, they would have been searching high and low to find her. Instead, you saved her. |

| In ashtabula county they hold dogs for 14 days after that they are put up for adoption. My parents found a coonhound once. They called the auditors office (dog license department) and they said once we bought a license it was considered ours. So dad went in and bought one. We knew she was dumped because she didn't have a collar. I would check with your auditors office since they handle dog licenses. I've never herd of 90 days. That's way too long. |

I'd get her the shots (because, especially in the case of parvo, it could mean her life if you don't...). And if her real owners show up, you could ask them to pay you back, since legally they'd have to do it eventually anyway... But as for not getting attached... obviously you already are, but I'd try to tell myself "I might not get to keep her" until it's been at least two weeks.. then I'd say "Okay, if she had decent owners, they'd have showed up by now" and relax. Legally you might have 90 days, but let's face it, probably if they don't show up in two weeks they won't show up at all... And if they do, you can offer to buy her from them, or offer to find them a new puppy... they might not take the offer, but maybe they will. |
