So, Mic has just started doing this weird thing for about the past week. He refuses to eat his treats! The only treat he will eat is pupperoni and string cheese. He has even turned down some people food! He seems to be eating/drinking normal (a little less food since its hot), so I don't know what the heck is up with him! Is it possible he just decided, nope! not gonna eat that! I mean, I went out when it started and bought new treats and he won't eat those either! I mean I go in the cupboard, get the treat, and he literally puts his nose up in the air and turns his head... Kevin actually gets impatient and just leaves the treat on the ground and walks away, but I try and work with him... make him sit and lay and stuff, but he still won't eat them! I now have about 6 boxes/bags of treats that he won't touch. I use the string cheese while training, but all the other treats are just for being a cutie patootie... so I don't know!
There is one thing though that started around the same time which I can't figure out either, but maybe they could be connected?? It's grass. Every morning and every day when I get home from work I take him out, and he immediately goes pee, and then starts eating grass... then a minute later he pukes. Now I'm getting worried because he's been doing this EVERY day now for the past week (2x a day)... It's starting to freak me out because I can time it so he pukes outside in the grass now and not on my carpet... His puke is that foamy white/yellow acidy looking stuff.
So my new theory is his puking so much making his throat sore and he doesn't want to eat the treats. Because his treats are all kind of dry and the pupperoni and cheese is really soft and kind of moist... Opinions??? Also, why is he eating grass so much lately and should I be worried? I've read the grass thing can be normal, but this much? |

Maybe Mic has decided he needs to lose weight and now has bulimia? j/k No offense intended. It's times like this when you wish your rattie could talk and tell you what is going on. |

I've heard they eat grass if their stomach is upset. I think it is supposed to settle it or something like that. Not sure where I heard that or if I just made it up. But somehow it has made itself in my head as a truth. About the treat thing you may have actually spoiled him. I've heard of dogs rejecting treats after being given those liver treats. Maybe he is going through a phase where all he wants is pepperoni and cheese. Lucy doesn't really have this issue though. She just loves all types of food. |

www.peteducation.com says this: Q. Why do dogs eat grass? A. A dog eating grassDogs commonly eat grass, and there are several explanations that have been offered for this behavior. One, wild canids (e.g., wolves and fox) eat all of an animal when they catch it. Since they eat many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they end up eating a lot of grasses and plants that were in the intestines of these animals. In addition, they have been known to eat certain berries and other plant material. Dogs then, may eat grass because, in reality, it is a normal part of their diet. Many times, dogs will vomit after eating grass. Did they eat grass to make them vomit? Or did they vomit because they ate grass? It is a mystery, but it seems that some dogs may eat vegetation when they have an upset stomach. The third reason - they just like it. Some dogs have certain species of grass or plant material that they will search out and eat. We know a beagle who can pick raspberries faster than his owner. In any case, grass eating is basically a normal behavior, and is not of concern unless your dog does it excessively. |

Sorry I don't really have an answer for you Kim. I'm thinking that Mic knows if he holds out he'll get the cheese and pupperoni that he really wants.
Savanna has not met a treat she doesn't like, and she eats grass all of the time, never vomits tho. |

| Thanks for all the suggestions! i get what your saying about the grass, so I'm not really worried about him eating it, it's just that he is doing it so much now and throwing up at least twice a day? Does that seem like a lot of throwing up? And with the treats, he has always gobbled up whatever we gave him, but if he doesn't eat the treat now we don't give in and give him anything else, he just gets nothing then... I guess it could be that he got spoiled and now all he wants is the pupperoni and cheese... I'm just confused because these incidents both started at the same time, I guess it could be a coincidence, right? |

| I would just watch him. I think as long as he is eating and drinking as usual he should be fine. There hasn't been any fertilizer or weed killer put on the grass in the past week or so has there? |

| Ernie grazes too and it's like he's obsessed. He's never ever ever turned down a treat. he's vomited when he's eaten too much grass but I usually don't allow him to graze as much as he would like. Wish I had an answer but maybe subtract the cheeze and watch him on the obsessive grass eating. He should come around. You know ratties, stubborn and when they set their mind to something. Right now, he just likes grass and doesn't mind vomiting I guess. |

The twins at times appear to graze also. They often eat grass, whether they are full or not. I watch them and try not to let it get out of hand... |

| You did say that it has turned hot where you live? Many dogs lose their appitites when it gets hot just like people do. I prefer cold salad when it is hot too. Cheese is usually refrigerated, that may be why there. All mine eat grass, but usually don't puke it up every day. Maybe his food is giving him a sour stomach? Dogs are as individual as people for that sort of thing. You could try some cooked veg or some pumpkin to see if he likes that better and it might just settle his stomach. |

| All my dogs have always eaten grass. Sometimes they throw up afterward, but not always. My vet will put them on a ground beef and rice diet for a week or two until they seem to regain their normal habits/hunger. If this continues, take him to the vet...I think my old guy went through something like this when he was younger. He liked to chew on (and swallow) plastic water bottles. He ended up with ulcers in his stomach and intestines. He was put on the diet above, and maybe an antibiotic/pain pills (it's been a long time). He recovered fine, and hasn't had a problem since. |

Kimrose? How is mic feeling? Shiloh also grazes. She much prefers the weeds that come up in my greenhouse if I don't tend to them every day. She likes tall grasses best of all. It does seem as if she eats only a certain kind too. Odd puppies! Have you changed Mic's regular dog food lately? Maybe that's the culprit. Anyway, let us know how he's feeling please! |

I've got 4 grazers. Loco grazes and then pukes - total bulemic model type high strung whippet. The other 3 just do it from time to time and don't puke....so who knows. |

Mic is fine today. Thanks you guys for caring He did get sick last night but that was Kevin's fault... I caught him giving him ribs and the peice he gave him had a little bbq sauce on it!!! duh!! But at least there were no grass related incidents over the weekend...
I'm just worried because when people throw up a lot (like belimics, sp?) it affects their throat, teeth, health... so I'm wondering if so much throwing up will be damaging for him?? Also, he doesn't really eat much grass... most of the time he will just eat one or two blades and then
So how much puking is to much? When would you guys get worried? I mean, he's not dehydrated...
He's still doing the anti-treat thing, I think he was just spoiled, or it may be the heat... today is a lot cooler than it has been so I will try to give him an older treat and see if he takes it |

| Well, I can tell you one thing...I had the worse morning sickness (anything that went down came back up for months...hospitalized, etc.) and it didn't affect my teeth. Any vomiting does make the throat sore but I had no lasting effects....no last effects anywhere and I mean I puked several times a day for weeks on end. |
