Hey everyone! I have another question. I know terriers were bred to hunt small creatures and it is instinct for them to do so. We have a lake cabin that we spend a lot of time at and Rocky's favorite activity is to chase the many chipmunks and try to catch them. He has only caught one but it was injured and couldn't run. He dropped it when it wiggled in his mouth and it tried to bite him. We love watching him stalk and chase the chipmunks. My concern is that when he catches one, he won't know what to do with it, and it will bite him. Do chipmunks carry any diseases I should be concerned about and what should I do if he gets bitten? He's up to date on all of his shots. He's getting better and better at trapping them away from their burrows under our shed and he's bound to catch one sooner or later. Thanks!

What you do might depend on where you live. Like up here in the NW we don;t have to worry about rabies from racoon bites, but know it's an issue down in the south. So, you might just call your vet and see what they say.
Rocky might know just what to do - because of his instincts.

~~ Life is awesome when you share it with a couple of Ratties! ~~

I always think about the fleas involved with birds, deer, squirrels, chipmunks.
I wouldn't want Ernie chasing, catching and possibly getting bit just because I don't know if the teeth could cause an infection. Teeth bites, even human, are bad as far as bacteria.

Katie pretty much eradicated all the chipmunks we had and I really don't know if she ate them or just what -- I mainly chased them away. She does have all her vaccines -- you might ask your vet for his/her advice.

Thanks erniebenernie! We think Rocky's pretty cute too! He's a rescue and I think he's either an unusual looking rattie or has a lot of rattie in him. The descriptions people have posted of their ratties personality and behavior sound exactly like Rocky.

Rocky is up to date on his shots and gets Frontline Plus and Heartguard once a month so I'm not too worried about fleas. Does have the rabies shot protect him from getting rabies?

If he ingest fleas he can get tapeworms -- I'm not sure if those meds cover tapeworms, I know they cover some worms.  I have that problem with my stray cat that has adopted us.  He gets tapeworms all the time from eating things.  I keep flea preventative on him, but still have to occasionally worm him for tapes.
