I've been thinking about changing the way I feed my "big dogs" and the cats to just once daily. Currently, I give them only dry food in the morning around 8:00 and then around 5:00pm more dry food with a little canned food on top. I have to go to my house next door to do this and it usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes each time. It would save me a little if I could cut it down to just once daily, but I'm not sure, should I feed morning or afternoon or does it really matter or should I keep the schedule they are on? The dogs are both mixed breeds and each weigh about 60 lbs. I usually take Daisy over to play in the afternoon before I feed and sometimes she eats a little with them.
I'm having such a problem with finding something that Daisy will eat I'm also wondering if maybe I should just feed her once a day. She's 8 months old and weighs about 9 to 10 lbs. She spends a lot of the day "resting" or napping inside with Mom, but she does run around a lot in the afternoon and before bed. At the present time I leave some Natural Balance dry food out all the time. In the morning I give her some canned food (right now Canidae) but she is not eating it. I think I will have to cook her some more chicken. I just don't have any right now. I can only go to the store when I have a sitter for Mom and the sitter I had scheduled for yesterday didn't come, so my groceries are getting kind of low. I really hate having to depend on someone else in order for me to take care of my family. Mom has not been doing good these past few days. Wants to sleep all the time and not get out any. Hope it's just a phase.
Anyway, please give me your opinions on feeding once a day - for the big dogs and also for Daisy. I think she's too young, but if she's really not interested in eating, what difference does it make?

I feed once a day. In the evenings. I do it cuz my dogs are crated while I'm at work about 9 hours a day, and if I feed them in the mornings, I worry that they won't be able to hold it if they have to go potty during the day cuz they ate earlier.
So I feed 'em around 6:30 or 7:00 pm and they're all pooped out (literally) in the morning. I give them snacks in the morning when I put them in their crates, but just 2 each.
I see nothing wrong in feeding once daily. My babies seem to be OK, and I've been doing it for years with no issues.

| I don't see anything wrong with it either, I'm lucky if I can get Joleigh to eat ONCE a day. We feed my cat once a day, in the morning but only in the morning because she wont eat it all, leaves some for later, and if we feed her at night theres "something" (we don't know what) bringing her bowl out to the middle of the yard and finishing whatevers left of it. |

There's nothing wrong with once a day feeding. All three of mine get fed once a day. Rowdy gets a treat in the morning before I go to work, but he's crated when we're at work and if we don't get home in time, he has accidents in his crate. By feeding them all after I get home around 6-7, they have time to diest, poop and then go to bed. Works well. They used to be on twice a day feedings and to make the switch easier, i gradually decreased the morning feeding and increased the night fedding over about 2 weeks. I figured this didn't make it as big of an adjustment on the dogs. |

I've always fed my dogs once a day (since I was a kid)...never had any problems. They get fed around 6:30-7 pm. They do get a treat or two during the day, but other than that, they are fine with not eating until evening. The only dog I've ever fed twice a day was Buddy, who HAD to because he needed meds twice a day, and it had to be mixed in with food. Dogs aren't like us humans...their metabolisms are different and as a result, they don't need to eat as often as we do. 8 months is old enough to feed once a day...only very young pups need to eat more smaller meals throughout the day. In feeding Daisy once a day, you may see her actually want to eat...and clean her bowl, especially when you say she isn't too active during the day. |

| If you leave food out all the time, the dog will learn that they don't have to eat when you want them to, it will always be there. You should start putting the bowl up for her. It can have food in it, ready to go, just not where she can get to it. With pepper, we gave her 10 minutes. If she was not eating it, I'd put it up for the next feeding time, and she would have to wait. If she was at the bowl eating when the 10 minutes were up though, I wouldn't pull it away from her. I'd let her finish. Being an only dog, it was really the only way to give her that sense of urgency, just the same as multiple dogs have to compete for food. Now I'm pretty much leaving it out all the time, but she's crated all day. She gets fed when i get home, but she usually doesn't eat till i'm sitting down having my dinner. |

| Thanks for all the input. I think I will go to once a day. It sure will make things easier for me, not having to go back and forth. Lil Daisy will just have to get with the program. The cats will probably have some attitude about it for quite some time, but they'll get over it, eventually. Thanks again. |

| I am sure that by you leaving the NB down all day she is keep herself full by picking. Then when you go to give her more food she doesn't want it. So by switching to taking away all food except once a day you may run into a problem. Once a day feedings are fine, but remember she is a young, small dog and occasionally it can affect their blood sugar going so long without food. I would play it by ear though. If you are still going to leave food out for her, than it's not really only feeding her once a day and I wouldn't worry too much about it. If you choose to fully control her feedings, do as Kristin mentioned and limit the amout of time she has to eat. After a day or two they catch on quick and eat it right up. |

| Yes, I will still keep the dry food down. Right now it's Natural Balance small bites. Since I had to buy a 5 lb bag, it will last forever!! She only nibbles on it every now and then and not much at a time. Guess just when she really gets hungry. |

| It may only seem like a little but you would be surprised at how much she probably eats..... most likely her days worth of food. At 9-10lbs she only needs about 1/2cup or so a day of NB, that isn't a lot at all. And essentially you are free feeding with a treat in the evening, not just feeding her once a day, so in that sense you shouldn't worry. |

I think as long as they are getting enough at the one meal a day (ie you don't notice any weigh changes etc.) then once a day is fine. As stated here lots of people feed that way and have no problems. My Ratties get fed twice a day as I work from home and am here to let them out during the day.. Our outside animals Buddy (Rott/lab mix) and Hoss our cat get fed once daily around 5:30pm. So We do both.
Boogie eats (wolfs it down actually) quickly and wants more and Bunny eats a bit and walks away. She probably eats half of what Boogie will. I take her food up after about 10 mins as I dont' want her protecting her bowl all day from Boogie. I have always taken food up for my house dogs as it makes their poop schedules more predictable... free feeding never worked for me. JMHO |

| I used to free feed, I'd put in their bowls the amount they got for the day and if they didnt eat it all then it carried over to the next day. I stopped doing that because I never was sure how much each one got and sometimes there would be accidents in the house at night. So now I feed in the morning (just my preference) and some treats at night. If they dont eat it...I put it up. My dogs always seemed to want to eat late, like 9 or 10pm and then they would sneak downstairs and poop in the middle of the night. |

| I give mine Natural Balance Small Bites also. One thing to be careful of if you leave it down all the time, is if any water, or moisture gets into it, it can have mold under the food on top, where you cannot see it on top. So be sure to check it. I found mold in Reni's this morning, from leaving it, and not realizing it got wet yesterday, when she took a drink, and dripped water into it. |

| I was wondering the same thing about Toa...I have been thinking of changing to once a day and I have been cutting the AM portion and increasing the PM slightly. Is 8 months too young to feed only once a day? (I think BIG OL TOA can handle it! LOL) |
