Okay so I just brought Joleigh out to potty before we go to bed, and she was sniffing around the ground and all of the sudden started yelping and trying to run away.. i look down @ where she was and there was a bug, maybe 2-3 inches long that was kind of rectangular shaped.  Its dark out so i grab joleigh and run inside, whatever it was either bit her or sprayed something in her eye.  she wont open it and is running around rubbing her face to the ground and whining.... mind you, this just happened like 5 mins ago... ANY ideas on what it was!? i got a damp cloth and wiped her eye but it didn't seem to do much help, i opened her eye as much as she'd let me and her eye is extremely blood shot... should i bring her to the vet or wait and see?

well i looked it up last night and it said that usually it just irritates the dogs eyes, makes 'em red a bit, but should go away.. they never said anything about swelling, but of course i get to looking it up and some dog went blind from that stupid bug. so now, of course, im freaking out. She seems to be VERY sensitive to light but other than that, she's still playing and all.

Do you have any eye wash? I would start rinsing it out ever so often. The vet may give you some ointment for it.

Maybe some benedryl, for the allergic reaction. Springtime, Winchester's eyes were mucky. I kept putting homeopathic eye drops in, and they eventually cleared up. I hope that bug does not do that to her ever again! Is a flying kind of bug? Maybe sprinkle some sulfur around lightly , to keep them away. We have big brown palmetto bugs here, in Florida, that if you smash one, it puts out a really stinky, bitter almond smell.Good luck!

How much benedryl would i give her? last time she was weighed she was 7 pounds, but i think shes more like 8 or 9 now... I dont think they fly, but i could be wrong.. be careful tho! look it up and make sure you watch out for them, from what i read majority of them are in Florida. they're found in the gulf coast states. another name for them is Anisomorpha buprestoides. I live in an apartment complex, so its kind of hard to keep bugs away lol

If it is hard to flush her eye, maybe use 2 people. This is so probably after the fact but I just seen this thread. I am sure the vet will give her eye drops as well. Poor Joleigh, I hope she is okay!!

Sidenote: I can't believe you found the bug and type, how did you do that!!

okay so, we just got home, after about 12 grueling hour and about 300 miles of driving. Finally found a vet who would take her as an emergency. Let me start from the beginning tho... i found the bug because i saw it,it was dark but i could see two bright stripes down its back... and just googled a bunch of diff things until i found the one that was found here in Louisiana and then searched for a pic of it and sure enough, it was a match! Now I drove an hour, went to look for a vet i found online in the town where my car was being worked on. well.. the address was nonexistant so i don't know what that way about.. So I borrowed my mothers car and went to one a town over. Show up there, and by this time joleighs eye was swollen about 1/2" away from where it should have been, with constant whining, thankfully my friend came with me to hold joleigh while i drove, babying her and trying to make her as comfy as possible. ANyways, of course, there's no vet there today. I think i misunderstood the meaning of a VETS office, but whatever. so the receptionist refers me to another vet that could take me @ 315, about 30 minutes away towards where we just came from... still didn't have my car so i took my moms van for the 30 minute ride, four hours before my appt. (i knew if they saw her they'd take her)... and get there about 2 minutes before they were closing for lunch. THANKFULLY the vet was at the counter talking to the receptionist and looks at us and says "can i help..." *joleigh looks in her direction* "OH MY GOD... come on come on...." anyways, the acid from the bug basically burned off the top layer of her eyeball, while irritating all the inside of her eyelids making them swell up. She gave joleigh some medicine while we were there, and gave us some painpills, which she made the point of telling me she RARELY does but wants me to understand that my baby is in extreme pain right now, so not to expect much out of her, nor for her to be in the best of moods. She slept the entire way home, and the swelling is already going down. She's scheduled to get spayed friday which will be good because while she is down they can inspect it closer to make sure that no more damage was done. It won't compromise her sight at all, unless of course something was missed and it gets worse. she just told me to watch for what looks like a bubble or bump on her eye, which could result in her eye rupturing.

SO WATCH OUT FOR THIS NASTY BUG!

Can you post a pic of this bug are areas it is found in? I wonder if it's here in Ohio?

I am glad you got her to a vet and taken care of. I hope for a full and speedy recovery.

That's awful!  What a day this has been for you two.  And what is this acid-spraying bug?  And what is up with your vet, who wouldn't see her until that afternoon?  Anyway, sounds like she is on her way to recovery.... keep us posted.

Glad your little one seems to be doing better. I am concerned in my area about spiders. We have a lot of them including black widows (seen them several times on my patio). I wonder what their affect would be on my little girl.

I am sooo sorry that your little girl has had so much bad stuff because of a stupid bug. I really appreciate you giving us all the information about this bug. We don't have that kinda of praying mantis by us, but we do have lots of bugs. It is something that we all need to be aware of and hopefully this post will help others avoid a similar painful situation.

it was hard to even look at her, she looked so pitiful. shes getting plenty of lovingg of course. we're lying on the couch together and shes snoring right in my ear as I type lol.

Mitch, her vet claimed that it wasn't an emergency and couldn't push people who had appointments back for anything less. Of course the vet who took her got MAD when I told her that, saying it was an emergency since it was her eyes.. "you don't mess around with the eyes" as she said.
