My little shih'tzu use to do that every once in awhile. I've never seen my rattie do it though. I'm not sure why dogs do this. But I'm sure someone here on the board will be able to answer your question

She either has worms or needs her anal sacs expressed. Either way the vet can help you out. If it's ana sacs the vet will explain it for the future.

If it is more easier a groomer can do the glands for you most likely cheaper and sometimes better!!!!!  They should be doing it on all the dogs they groom!!! I am a groomer.  That usually fixes the butt scooting!!!

True but the first time she needs to go to the vet in case it's worms (highly likely).

If a worm check and expressing anal glands doesn't stop the behavior, consider possibility of allergies. Allergies are known to cause rectal itching and dogs with severe allergies will scoot on their buts to "scratch" that itch. LOL

Didn't know that! But glad my allergy baby, Mayfly, doesn't have THAT symptom!

Pepper scoots when she has diarrhea. It's funny. Like she's "wiping" on the grass before we go inside.

The most likely reason is either anal glands or worms.  I would take your new pup to the vet to be checked.  When you go be sure to take a fresh poo sample to check for worms.  Have them drain and explain the anal glands to you.
