I just got a new rat terrier on Saturday and I'm starting to get very worried. She's been acting very lethargic and depressed and I'm not 100% sure what I should do. This might get lengthy but I wan't to describe my situation in full to see if you guys think you can help at all.
I bought her from a woman on craigslist. She said she was a rescue and has had her shots. I met her and picked her up. Immedeatly she seemed depressed but the lady said she didn't like the long car ride it took to get there and once she gets home she'll be bouncing around everywhere. The whole ride home she sat in the passenger seat, unmoving and not really responding to anything. It was the same thing when I took her home. She sat with me on the couch and didn't really move at all. I had to sit with her and coax her to eat a little bit of food and some water. Towards the end of the night she was getting better. She was starting to follow me around the house but she was still very calm, quiet and lethargic. Anytime I sat down she would sit next to me and not move. I had read on wikipedia and a few other sites that sometimes they take a while to get used to a new environment so I assumed that was the problem.
The next day she was acting the same. She hardley moved unless I left the room, in which case she would follow me. She's very sweet and seems to like cuddling but it just doesn't seem to be how a 5 month old puppy should act. I would think she should be running around, chewing on things, etc. The only thing that makes her happy is when I take her outside. She loves to play outside. She will chase me around wagging her tail and having funny, but the second we go back inside she's back to being depressed. She rarely even wags her tail inside. I love taking her outside and we play every day but when I bring her back inside her mood immedeatly changes.
She's also very skittish. There are a couple of rooms in the house she's afraid to go into. I have to coax her to make it through the dining room. I also always have to coax her to eat. She eats a little more and more each time so that's good but I still have to sit with her for 20 or 30 minutes encouraging her to eat.
All in all she seems to be slowly getting better. She follows me around and she's eating more but she still is very lethargic and seems depressed. She sits with me and barely moves. Do you guys have any suggestions? I really don't know what to do |

| I agree with Gwacie, please call a vet as soon as possible. I am no expert but this is one of the moast active breeds and even for a rescue it sounds unusual. I hope the best for you guys, let us know what happens please. |

Have you taken her to your vet? I am NO expert, but, from what I have seen, heard, read, these dogs are EXTREMELY sensitive. Some of them simply take awhile to "warm up" to a new environment. Daxter's Mom just mentioned the fear of being inside the house but fine outside issue in another post about recall. My advice, for what it's worth, is definitely do not coddle her when she is being fearful. This reinforces the fearful behavior. Just carry on as normal and she will catch on. That being said, you need to make sure she gets a clean bill of health from YOUR vet. |

first off: WELCOME TO THE SITE! i agree, you should take her to the vet to make sure she gets a clean bill of health just like any other new pet. i'm no expert with rescues, but IMO she's probably just scared, i don't know what her life was like before she was rescued... and she's moved around a lot in a short period... i'd say she just needs some time to warm up (i agree with amy about not coddling her... she should come around in her own time) congratulations and good luck! |

As a person who has brought in lots of rescues I can tell you that lethargic is never a good thing. Scared or shy are not the same as lethargic. That is why I think you need to make sure she is healthy. Have you tried to play with her inside at all? If you stay outside for a long time does she stay perky the entire time? It was your use of the lethargic descriptor that got me concerned. |

Thanks for the replies (and sorry about the double post!) I guess I will try to get her to a vet soon. The fact that she is very playful outside makes me think that it just might still be an issue of getting used to the house, but I would have think she'd come around by now. I do want to take her to a vet though and make sure there aren't any issues that I don't know about. I've been trying not to coddle her but it's so hard!! I'll do better though. Thanks for the replies and if you have any more ideas, let me know! -Joshua |

| I've had a sick dog that acted "normal" outside, but was lethargic inside...please get her to the vet and find out what's going on. A 5 month old rattie is normally very active. |

At the very least a 5 month old should be chewing. I agree, the sooner ot the vet the better. Could be something simple. Have you looked at her poop for worms? Vickie |

| Today she actually started eating on her own which I was very happy about but the first couple of days I literally had to sit with her a few time a day and kind of ruffle her food with my fingers to convince her to eat it. She's been loosening up and getting better about everything but she still sleeps and lays down a lot. This is my first dog so I'm going to ask around for a good vet tomorrow and try to take her in ASAP. |

A pup should be prety active. I would get in to see a vet ASAP. Did you get anyhting in writing about what shots you pup has had? Or about heartworm testing or any other testing for parasites? |

Well, welcome to you and your pup. I do think this is a bit unusual as this breed of dog is pretty high energy. I would strongly encourage you to see a vet as quickly as possible. Hopefully it is nothing but shyness and due to the fact that the pup is a rescue you don't really know the history. However, if is happens to be something else, it is better to find out and nip it in the bud. Many vets in our area have low cost 1st time visit fees for new pups.....so you might check on that if cost is an issue. The reality of it is, this pup is going to need shots down the road anyhow, so finding a vet now would be better anyhow. If it does happen to be something else, early detection is better than waiting until the problem is bigger. Sure hope they figure out what the situation is. I will tell you from personal experience, this breed is a bit skittish around strangers sometimes....so I can see where they might have an issue moving into a new environment, but after the first day they are usually more chipper. Take care and please keep us posted on the progress of your pup. Lots of great advice and training information here as well. Lynn |

Hey guys, thanks again for the responses. Sorry I wasn't able to update you yesterday, it was quite a busy day. I'm at work right now but I have an appointment at 4 for her at the vet so she can get checked out. I had a few responses to my other post (I accidentally posted twice) saying they had a similar issue with their dogs. I really think her health is fine (though I'm still taking her to a vet to be sure) I just don't understand why it's taking her so long to adapt to her new home. With that out of the way, her name is Yumiko (I love Japanese names). I've taken a few pictures on my phone but I don't have a way to get them to my computer. When I get a chance I'll get some pictures up She's really cute and tiny. She's white with some fawn colored spots (she almost looks like a baby deer). One ear stands up while one ear flops over. She's adorable!!! |

Good Luck, I hope she gets a clean bill of health. From what I have seen a lot of rescue dogs (unless severly traumatized) do well when they go to their foster or forever home. The Lathargic nature concerns me as well as she should be active. If the vet gives her a clean bill of health maybe a little confidence boosting will be needed, positive reinforcment of the good and ignore the bad. Good luck to you@@ |

just to let you know, sometimes it takes a few weeks for a new dog to adjust to a new home, especially rescues. give her time to figure out that this is her forever home. let us know what the vet says. |

Good news! Yumiko got a 100% clean bill of health. The doctor was very nice and helped me with all of my questions. He said since she was rescue, and then lived with one family, and now she's living with me she just needs some stability in her life and lots of love (which she is getting . She is doing a lot better too. This morning when I was getting dressed for work she was running around the room, licking my toes when i was trying to put on my socks and nibbling on my fingers while I was trying to tie my shoes. I also finally got some pictures up. They're from my cell phone so the quality isn't so great, but I'll work on some better ones soon. |

OMG! She is gorgeous I'm glad she's ok physically and I'm sure she'll continue to come around emotionally as well. It will take some time, but once she is sure she is really, really home, I know you'll see more and more personality - maybe too much LOL!!!!! |
